4 TOPAN FORM TOPAN FORM COLOUR FF GENERAL INFORMATION TOPAN Form Create Curved Shapes Quickly and Easily Applications Shops and trade fairs Curved door fronts Door arches Sales displays Counters Wall finishings Elegant finishings for masonry arches and columns Designer pieces Grooved side also ideally suited for use as a design element Highlights TOPAN Form colour bonded with formaldehyde-free PUR (yielding a fine, dense surface and compatible with healthy living) Unique pigment formulation prevents fading of colours as a result of exposure to light Easy to varnish, wax, veneer and coat TOPAN Form colour FF is highly moisture-resistant High bending, screw-holding and tensile strength perpendicular to grain Homogeneous makeup and low mineral concentration (for long tool life) Diverse shaping and profiling possibilities New Vistas of Creativity Use TOPAN Form and TOPAN Form colour FF to create waves, arches and tubes quickly, easily and above all economically. Both designers and processors will find limitless possibilities and attractive solutions whether sleek and utilitarian or boldly designed. Go on a voyage of discovery: mould beautiful curves of all shapes and sizes with one and the same board. Curves Galore The grooves the spacing and depth of which are precisely uniform let you make smoothly curved shapes, even with very tight bending radii. Without running the risk of breaks, without any tendency for the material to spring back to its original shape, and without polygon effects (with angled corners). Use two TOPAN Form panels cut to size and a custom mould. Apply glue to the slotted sides and press them together in the mould. Afterwards, fill the outer seams with two-component adhesive and sand the surfaces by hand. Finished! Attractively Shaped and Coloured The exceptional TOPAN Form colour FF range lets you use not only the classics, TOPAN Form colour FF black and TOPAN Form colour FF brown, but also five other up-to-date colours to implement your ideas: TOPAN Form colour FF blue, TOPAN Form colour FF yellow, TOPAN Form colour FF green, TOPAN Form colour FF red and TOPAN Form colour FF orange. This through-dyed, formaldehyde-free MDF opens up wholly new, creative possibilities for designing curved elements. TOPAN Form colour FF is fully compatible with healthy living; its hydrophobic bond makes it extremely moisture-resistant. The use of a special pigment formulation prevents colours from fading as a result of exposure to light, also making these products ideal for using the grooved side for wall finishings and curved applications. There is no need to apply coloured coatings; clear varnish or wax is completely sufficient. The many colours in which TOPAN Form colour FF is available opens up a wide array of new possibilities, on which we ll be happy to advise you. Flexible and Advantageous Where many other materials run up against their limits, or cost considerations force you to abandon your creative ideas, TOPAN Form only just begins to unfold its potential. Also in combination with many wood-based and other materials. Thanks to the outstanding quality and processing attributes of TOPAN MDF, the smooth, bright and homogeneous surface of TOPAN Form lends itself to veneers and coatings of all kinds. The possibilities for finishing the surfaces are limited only by your imagination. Natural or high-gloss, surfaces identical to other materials or in appealing contrast to them, gradual transitions or varying shapes with TOPAN Form, your ideas are practically built in.

6 TOPAN FORM TOPAN FORM COLOUR FF QUALITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS Product Information Quality and Environmental Awareness Materials and Manufacture TOPAN MDF Form is a medium-density fibreboard (MDF) product. We use top-quality, debarked softwood such as pine, spruce, and larch from forest thinnings to make this superior product. The wood is chipped and then broken down into fibre in a refiner. This is subsequently mixed with environmentally safe, biodegradable binders and formed into homogeneously structured board in a drying process in which precisely regulated heat and pressure are applied. After the grooves are cut, this yields a technically top-quality wood-based sheet with unique properties for use as TOPAN Form. Quality Stringent manufacturing guidelines and inspection by impartial, government-certified agencies ensure that every TOPAN Form and TOPAN Form colour FF sheet produced is of the highest quality. We also continuously monitor product quality in our own laboratory. Where solid wood and other materials reach their limits, TOPAN Form broadens your scope for professionally implementing product and design ideas while facilitating processing and use. Environmental Management acc. to ISO We attach major importance to protecting the environment at our production facilities. At Glunz AG we regard this as part of our responsibility towards future generations. Our TOPAN manufacturing facilities have therefore been accredited under ISO The production processes remain below the legally prescribed ceilings on pollutant emissions and noise levels. Gaseous emissions and wastewater - low in any case - are treated in advanced bioscrubbers and purification systems to ensure environmentally acceptable levels. For the future as well, we are committed to setting a good example in these respects. Energy Most of the energy required to produce TOPAN comes from cogeneration plants fuelled with wood scrap. We regard practising ecological efficiency as part of our responsibility to society ISO 9001-Certified Quality Management Our fibreboard production plants are certified as ISO 9001-compliant. This is your guarantee that all our business processes from development to shipping are clearly documented and subject to constant quality monitoring. The result is consistently top-quality product. 5 6 a b
TOPAN FORM TOPAN FORM COLOUR FF INFORMATION ON USE Information on Use Making Waves, Arches and Tubes is Child s Play How to Make a Tube 1. First build a template out of particleboard. To ensure a smooth, even curve across the entire surface of the shaped piece, make certain that the ribs are no more than 25 cm apart. 2. Using a roller, apply D3 or D4 adhesive to the grooved sides of two pre-cut TOPAN Form panels. 3. Press the glued panels together. When building a tubular design, keep in mind that the radius of the inside panel will be smaller than that of the outer panel. The outer panel must therefore be longer. 4. Wrap the TOPAN Form panels around the lower half of the template and secure them there with belts. 5. Make sure to apply additional pressure lengthwise between the clamps. 6. Allow the piece to cure for about five hours, then remove it from the template. 7. Plane the two long edges on a planing machine, so that the upper and lower halves will fit together precisely with flush joints. 8. Apply joint-filling, two-component adhesive to the long edges if there are any uneven spots. PU adhesive may be used if the two halves fit together exactly. 9. Use a spatula to apply the adhesive! (not shown) 10. After applying the adhesive to the two long edges, place the upper moulded half on top of the lower half. Apply adhesive tape to the template around the glued joints to prevent it from sticking to the moulded pieces. 11. Clamp the pieces in place with belts. Insert paper strips between the belts and the bonded joints to prevent sticking. The two halves may be joined without the template if dowels or flat springs can be used instead to achieve tight, evenly bonded joints. 12. Finish the outer surface of the shaped piece with sandpaper or an appropriately rounded sanding block. 13. Fill the open seams with two-component adhesive. How to Make a Wave Shape 1. First build a template out of particleboard. Make certain that the ribs are no more than 25 cm apart to ensure an even, smooth shape across the entire surface of the moulded piece. 2. Apply edge strips or adhesive tape to all ribs in the template so the panels can slide back and forth within it while preventing damage to the TOPAN Form surfaces. 3. When forming extremely tight radii, moisten the outer surfaces of the panels to increase their flexibility during shaping. 4. Using a roller, apply D3 or D4 adhesive to the grooved sides of the two pre-cut TOPAN Form panels. 5. Place the panels to be shaped between the upper and lower halves of the template. 6a + b. Press the panels together. Screw clamps, screw presses, or hydraulic presses are suitable. Hydraulic presses are especially economic. 7. Allow the piece to cure for about five hours, then remove it from the template. 8. Use sandpaper to finish the curved surfaces as desired. 9. Fill the open seams with two-component adhesive. 10. Use a spatula to apply the adhesive!
TOPAN FORM TOPAN FORM COLOUR FF INFORMATION ON USE 8 Information on Use TOPAN Form and TOPAN Form colour FF Cutting and Sawing All common types of saw can be used. Tungsten-carbide saw blades are recommended Best cutting angle: 8 to 10 degrees Best cutting speed: 40 to 80 m/min Drilling The same machines and tools can be used as for plywood and particleboard. Painting, Varnishing and Waxing Please note that, for technical reasons related to the production process, there may be some variations in colour between lots of TOPAN Form colour FF. These variations are impossible to completely prevent, especially between sheets of different thicknesses. Because wood is a natural product that discolours (yellows) when exposed to direct sunlight, it is important not to leave TOPAN Form colour FF sheets in the sun for very long. The pigment formulation used is lightfast, but not the wood fibres! Applying clear varnish or a suitable wax minimises the risk of the colour being altered by exposure to light. TOPAN Form colour FF can be treated with any commercial wax that is suitable for MDF panels. Most commercially available PUR-based varnishes yield excellent results with the application of only two coats to TOPAN Form colour FF. Filled-out edges in visible areas should be colour-matched by applying appropriately pigmented varnish, paint or stain. TOPAN Form is especially well-suited for painting and TOPAN Form colour FF for application of colourless varnish or lacquer. Please make sure to carefully observe the following instructions, however: a) Sealing PUR-based, two-component sealants are recommended; they are available from all major paint and varnish makers. This very important step can prevent the subsequent formation of cracks in the edges and faces of panels. Some varnish and paint types simultaneously seal, however, thus making this step unnecessary. b) Priming After sealing the panel, it should be sanded once or twice and then primed with a filler, which should be pigmented for TOPAN Form. To obtain a high-quality surface, another priming coat should be applied after sanding again. Priming is not necessary when applying clear varnish to TOPAN Form colour FF. c) Varnish or Paint Application Many different varnish and paint types are suitable. Please observe the manufacturer s recommendations. On request we will provide you with detailed advice on varnishing and painting free of charge. d) Waxing All commercially available waxes suitable for MDF can be used on TOPAN Form colour FF. Veneering and Laminating TOPAN Form and TOPAN Form colour FF are excellently suited for veneering, due to their very flat ground surfaces. Make sure that the veneer is dry (the moisture content should not exceed about eight percent) to prevent cracking. When choosing laminates, make sure that they can be readily moulded. To prevent marking of the grooves on the rear side and the laminate surface, do not form radii less than 20 cm with laminates less than 0.8 mm thick. Many silk-gloss or high-gloss unicolour decors also only permit large curves to be made, while decors with high-relief wood reproductions can permit tighter ones. The procedure for laminating is the same as for veneering, except that there is no sanding.
TOPAN FORM TOPAN FORM COLOUR FF INFORMATION ON USE 9 Information on Use TOPAN Form and TOPAN Form colour FF a) Gluing Hot-press glues are not the best choice for the smooth, ungrooved side. More flexible joints can be achieved with, for example, the D3 white glue Ponal Super 3. Apply glue sparingly to prevent it from penetrating the dense surface layer of TOPAN Form and TOPAN Form colour FF. b) Pressing and Sanding Pressing should be done at the usual temperatures for particleboard and MDF. If the grooves run parallel to the grain of the veneer, then the veneered side will be hollow after pressing. The bending effect is less pronounced when the veneer grain runs at right angles to the grooves. After cooling, the panel requires intermediate sanding on the veneered side. It is highly recommended to veneer TOPAN Form and TOPAN Form colour FF using a cold press. Pressing time: approx minutes. If the veneer does not exceed the recommended maximum moisture content (eight percent), the veneered parts will be nearly straight after opening the press. Do the final sanding after shaping. Gluing and Bonding If the standard panel width of 1030 mm is insufficient, you can glue together multiple panels with butt joints, either before or after moulding. a) Widening with Staggered Joints Glue together panels with butt joints. Use PU adhesive to avoid visible joints. You can use adhesive tape to apply the required pressure to the glued joints. The usual clamping devices are not suitable. It takes at least five hours for PU adhesive to cure. Join together a second set of panels in the same way. Then glue the two sets together with the grooved sides facing one another to ensure precise moulding in the template. For best results, make sure to stagger the glued joints well apart from one another. b) Lengthening If the standard length of 2800 or 2620 mm is insufficient, you can add panels with butt joints. Proceed as described above for widening. c) Joining together moulded elements If it is not possible to widen elements beforhand because of weight or size constraints, then TOPAN Form and TOPAN Form colour FF elements can also be joined after moulding. This is easy to do with dowels or flat springs. Tongue-and-groove joints are not recommended. Tip The flexibility of panels can be greatly improved by using a moist cloth or sponge to lightly and evenly moisten the ungrooved side before moulding. Do not get the panels wet, however, since this can cause them to swell or the fibres to protrude. Note The inner bending radii can be somewhat smaller with TOPAN Form colour FF than with TOPAN Form: TOPAN Form permits bending radii as small as about 60 to 70 mm, and TOPAN Form colour FF only about 90 mm. Technical Data The ungrooved panels easily fulfil all of the technical values specified in EN Inspections by independent testing institutes have shown that TOPAN Form and TOPAN Form colour FF comply with the stipulations of the German Ordinance on Prohibited Chemicals.
