1 YEAR 9 MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY PINE STORAGE BOX KNOWLEDGE BOOKLET You will be set homework once every two weeks. The information you need to learn is contained in this booklet. There will be a short test at the beginning of the lesson to test what you have learnt.

Always listen carefully to the teacher and follow instructions immediately. 2. Do not run in the workshop, you could bump into another student and cause an accident. 3. Always put your hand up if you need help as shouting out can cause a distraction and lead to an accident. 4. Always wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the task being undertaken. 5. All bags and stools should be safely stored away from the work area as they are trip hazards. 6. When learning how to use equipment, listen very carefully to all the instructions given by the teacher. Ask questions if you do not fully understand. 7. Do not use a machine if you have not be shown how to operate it safely by the teacher. Always ask for permission before you turn it on. 8. Only one person must operate a machine at a time. 9. Only have one person inside the yellow / black hazard markings around a machine. 10. Do not distract others whilst they are working as this may cause an accident. 5 Homework 4: Glues and Adhesives Adhesives are used to bond materials together to form a permanent joint. There are a wide variety of adhesives available and it is important to select the correct one for the task and to use if safely. A medium strength waterproof joint. Comes in liquid form and is applied using a spreader A waterproof adhesive but is relatively weak. Only suitable for modelling or temporary fixings. The glue stick is heated in a special glue gun. A waterproof, medium strength adhesive. Available, ready to use, in liquid form. Only suitable for small surface areas. A waterproof, medium strength joint. Comes in liquid form and is applied using a brush. Joints need to be held together while glue cures. Health and Safety: It is very important that adhesives are used safely. Read the instructions supplied with the product and follow them carefully. Manufactured boards are stronger, more stable and more uniform than wide boards of either hardwood or softwood.
