Manufactured boards come in half and full sheets. 9. What types of fixings can be used to join timbers and manufactured boards? Screws, nails, pins, bolts, plastic block joints, brackets etc 10. Can you identify some wood joints? Sketch two examples Lapped joint Mortise and tenon joint Dovetail joint Finger joint III. Essay Style Questions 1. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using hardwoods in indoor furniture Advantages: appealing grain, generally strong and durable Disadvantages: expensive, hard to work on 2. State a suitable hardwood to be used in outdoor furniture. Explain why you have chosen it Teak - superb stability, good strength properties, easy workability and most of all, its outstanding resistance to decay and rot Elm - tough, durable, resists splitting, durable in water 4
5 3. Explain the advantages of using softwood in construction Readily available Cheap Good strength to weight ratio Easy to shape and work on 4. State three wood finishes and give an example of why you would use it Oil based paints gloss finish, tough and long lasting Water based paints available in a wide range of colours but not as durable as oil based Varnish normally clear or transparent to show grain/colour of wood but also to protect against wear and tear Oil improves appearance of the grain and protects wood Wood stain - used to improve the colour of the wood and they also help to show up the grain. 5. Explain how plywood is manufactured. Use sketches to help explain Possible answer: Composed of individual plies or veneers Very strong due to the way plies are layered The grains of the plies are positioned at 90 degrees to the plies above and below it The plies are glued together An odd number of plies are used Plywood is less likely to warp due to this construction 6. Explain two advantages of using manufactured boards Generally more stable to timbers i.e. don t warp Cost- effective Can be worked with common woodworking tools 5
6 7. You are designing and manufacturing the wooden chair below. What wooden joint would you use to join the two parts? Justify your answer Mortice and tenon one of the strongest and most appealing woodwork joints able to be made because of its flush fitting design Dowel joint - very strong and attractive if they are, like all other joints, constructed well. Dowel is also very useful for greatly increasing the strength of weaker woodwork joints such as the butt joint 6
