Dayton Carvers Guild June I want to send a very clear message. Make no mistake about it. Let me address that directly. Do not be mistaken. Let me be very unambiguous about this. Don t be an idiot. Suspend your disbelief. I ve had a fairly consistent message to all. Let me be perfectly clear. Not from nowhere, four negatives make two positives. (/ Politicians & Shakespeare) To contribute to the newsletter, please contact Marshall Stearns at or lstearns@erinet.com. The June Program: How to Make Glasses for Carved Figures by Don Worley Is this guy, the guy who achieved great subliminal fame for developing No See-ums caricature characters whose main attribute was that you needn't have learnt to carve eyes, is he now going to the other extreme to show us how to carve glasses? Contact lenses, maybe, but glasses? Well, maybe not exactly carve them. This is know-how everyone must know, how to carve not-carved glasses. Seriously. You can t make this stuff up. Now, cover your left eye and read the chart. Don is all about the business of having fun while carving and, irregardless of how obtuse the subject, you WILL HAVE FUN. Don uses the Lynn Doughty process to make these glasses. Lynn must be good because he s from out of town, Jay, Oklahoma. OK, Don, take up the gauntlet. We re all eyes. And ears =>, but that s another program. Next Dayton Carvers Guild Meeting Tuesday, June 28, 2011, 7 pm at United Rehabilitations Services Building, 4710 Old Troy Pike (at Needmore Road), Dayton, Ohio Program: How to Make Glasses for Carved Figures by Don Worley Cookie Contributors: Marshall Stearns, Cheryl Cooke and Judy York 1
About Dave Lyons May Program on His Knives Terry Borger Takes Over Show &Tell We thank you, Terry, for pitching in. Karen Christian is Book Librarian At the May meeting Karen Christian volunteered to become The Dayton Carvers Guild Book Librarian. Pictured in the newsletter are two collector knives made by Dave. If the reproduction is good enough, you will see patterns in the metal. These are hard/tough/hard/tough layers of the kind made famous by sword forgers in medieval Damascus. The hardness gives a very sharp edge that will last. The toughness relieves the brittleness that otherwise goes with hardness. In modern times this is achieved with precision by the technology of powder metallurgy. High temperature parts in jet engines are made of powder metallurgy. Dave s carving blades are made of solid (not Damascus-type) 1095 high carbon steel. We asked him how he heat treats his carving blades. He didn t exactly say. If you were there, you will understand. The best front wedge angle depends on which wood is to be carved and on the technique of the carver. It s in the 14 to 18 degree range. It was a great program, Dave. Thanks. 3 Carve a "No See-um at Woodcraft with Don Worley Any carver will tell you that one of the hardest features to carve on any face is the eyes. To avoid this problem Don thought, why carve eyes at all. So, after many years of teaching carving he has developed No See-ums caricatures. Floppy hats, long hair, or squinty eyes eliminate the need to carve eyes. Join him for this fun-filled day and learn to carve a small character that you will be proud to show off or give as a gift. Tuition: $70 The class will be on Saturday, July 23, 2011 from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Bring a Flexcut kit #FR404, and either FR12 or FR13 Cutting Knife. If you need tools, Woodcraft has them at a discount for class attendees. The class site will be at Woodcraft of Dayton, Cross Pointe Centre, 175 E. Alex-Bell Rd. To sign up, contact Woodcraft of Dayton at daytonretail@woodcraft.com or (937) You May Study Birds and Animals in Person At Heaven s Corner Zoo and Animal Sanctuary you may see the real thing. It s in West Alexandria, Ohio. For info, ask Don Stephenson or see their web site, Carvers swarmed to Marion s Piazza like mosquitoes to The Memorial Day picnic. You are invited to join The Dayton Carvers Guild members and friends at Marion s Piazza at noon on the first Wednesday of every month. Marion s is at 3443 North Dixie Drive in Dayton. OUCH! Serving as a Good Bad Example Accidents Sam Slagle The next good bad example is Sam Slagle. Sam has carved a lot and for a long time so I thought he d have some good tales to tell. He didn t respond with any stories to my asking what were the really stupid things he did. But, he offered this advise. When power sharpening, be really, really careful. Don t make mistakes like laying your knife on a belt the wrong way. Power sharpening can be great, but dangerous. It can lead to terrible injuries. Pay attention! When you use sprays to seal, to finish or glue woods in a heated space, don t do it with the heater on. The hot furnace converts the fumes to acid which eats the heat exchanger. Sam learned this when he had to replace a heat exchanger. This is a new lesson for me. In the future, I ll heat up the shop, shut off the heater, wait a bit and then do my spraying. After the odor is gone I can resume heating. 3
50/50 Winner Ray Kunz stuffed an easy $14 into his pants pocket after winning the May 50/50 Drawing. A No Se-ums Santa How about carving this one? It s from Don Stephenson. Ornaments Kickoff in July In July we get rolling on ornaments for raffle at Artistry in Wood. Start carving some ornaments to bring in July. Dayton s 1983 Artistry In Wood The following appeared in the January- February, 1984 issue of Chip Chats: Dayton Show Sets Record Everyone was pleased with the third annual Artistry In Wood exhibition sponsored by the Dayton Carvers Guild, November 19-20, at the spacious Convention Center, Dayton, Ohio. It was the largest show put on by the Dayton club and one of the largest in the country. It went off without a hitch under the do-chairmanship of Ray Kunz and Ron Ryan. The exhibition successfully combined carving with a woodworking machinery display, and handcrafted furniture. Both days recorded excellent crowds, and numerous raffles were well patronized. One of the big highlights of the event was the presence of Ma Hai Feng, renowned bird carver from China, who was in the U.S. on behalf of the Worthington Collections, of Worthington, Ohio. While Ma Hai Feng s command of English was limited, he had no difficulty making friends with fellow carvers, who along with the general public flocked about his table and watched in awe as he carved birds with only a couple homemade tools for the most part. His work is outstanding, and was feature in the September-October Chip Chats. September Middle Creek Wildfowl Show in Pennsylvania The following came to our webmaster: The 25th Annual Middle Creek Wildfowl Show will be held on September 17 and 18, 2011 from 9 am to 5 pm each day. Anyone interested in exhibiting or entering the carving contests, please let me know and I will send you the information. Information on the show and about Middle Creek can be found on Middle Creek s section of the PA Game Commission website at open=514&objid=613318&mode=2 Albert Keith akeith@state.pa.us 4
To Make Your Composition Successful, Follow this Rule The public, without ever knowing it, expects this. The pro s, to communicate well, conform to it. Universally! It is where things are located on a composition. In a lecture on stage blocking I got this big surprise. (Blocking refers to where what action occurs: backstage left, upstage, center stage and so on.) Almost universally, the good stuff occurs on one side and the bad on the other. That s what people are used to so that s the way it s done. Which things are done on which side is shown in the next column. That s how you will organize a relief carving or the figures in a complex carved scene. After the lecture I saw the play, Twelve Angry Men. When a juror argued a bad argument he was on the viewer s right. When he changed his mind and then argued the good argument, he switched position to stand to the viewer s left. It happened over and over and it was astounding. The same thing happens in print. The interesting and important material, the grabber, is on the right. The boilerplate material is on the left. Check the cover Actor s Stage Right (Viewer s Left) The good guy Positive feelings Right Winning the fight Forthright Tell the truth Hero Dominant Father [or, center stage] Serious Establishment Violins, Soloist Actor s Stage Left (Viewer s Right) The bad guy Negative feelings Wrong Losing the fight Deceptive Lie Bully, bigot Subservient, the victim Mother Comic Spontaneity Cellos page of the newspaper. On magazine covers, the picture is to the right and the print to the left. Marshall Stearns 5
What is Your Age? May 2011 Meeting Survey We thought we re getting up there but here it is in print and that must make it true. We have lots of younger members but not so many at the May meeting. And, some older. Hickory Wood Available The following was sent to our webmaster: Judy lives in the Clayton - Englewood area. She also had downed hackberry, locust, catalpa and maple trees. We lost a 160 year old hickory tree in last week's straight line wind storm - it is such beautiful wood. Is there anyone in your guild that could use this for their carving? Judy Wagner or bjwagner81@aol.com Show and Tell Winners All Over the Place Of the folks who brought something to the May meeting for Show and Tell, Sam Slagle s ticket was drawn. He chose a carving knife. More were to receive prizes. Ken Williams Tool Roll Don Mertz Book Karen Christian Glue Tim Detweiler Glue Jim Rawlings Glue Rick Morgan Gift certificate for a Moore Roughout 6
