August Show and Tell Winners Win Big Charlie Avery was the biggest winner, the recipient of a carving knife. Ray collected a bottle of Gorilla 100% Tough Wood Glue, but he already had some so he gave it to Bridget who might need it. Jim Moser passed on another bottle of glue. Charlie Cooke received a much-needed book on caricature carving. How to Color Wood by Joe Brockman Bring your finishing problems to the September meeting. Finishing expert Joe Brockman of Sherwin Williams will tell us about staining and painting. Sherwin Williams serves hobbyists, home owners, professionals and low-tech to high-tech industry. We might learn something. Just for fun, bring something of yours with an unusual finish air brushed feathers, washed caricatures, colored chip carvings, iridescent fish Maybe Joe will learn something. Dayton Carvers in Woodcarving Illustrated, Fall 2011 Issue Bruce Nicholas has a nice article on how to chip carve, along with how to use artist s crayons to color chip carvings. Don Worley has a neat article on carving no-see-ums Santa ornaments. Artistry in Wood has a very informative add for our 2011 show. Why Amateur Carvers Carve An amateur does what one does for the love of doing. An amateur is ever learning, never satisfied with past accomplishments, always sharpening one s skills, interest and the never die desire to try and try and try. The amateur carver is still thrilled with the act of creating, thrilled with the challenge of a difficult project, thrilled with the process of carving and thrilled with sharing knowledge, creativity and personality through carving. Vince Higgins Passes Vince Higgins was a long time member of the Dayton Club until he moved to a nursing home. He hasn't been a member for the last couple of years. Vince passed away on August 30. There were no services. I was reading a 1984 issue of Chip Chats and saw an article on the Brukner Show in the Hobart Arena in Troy, Ohio, written by Ray Kunz. Warning system halts loose bits Imagine my surprise when a 1" rotary-carving burr--spinning at 18,000 rpm--escaped the collet of my carving tool and went "on tour" around my workshop. Lucky for me, it wasn't hungry for meat. That moment inspired me to come up with a warning system. I use a red felt-tip marker to color the portion of the shank normally covered by the collet. If that color appears while I'm carving, I know the bit has worked itself loose. I immediately shut off the tool--while leaving the burr against the wood--before disaster strikes. -- Dick Chenoweth, Conyers, Ga.
