1 SECTION PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS A. PART A and DIVISION 1 of PART B are hereby made a part of this SECTION. B. Examine all conditions as they exist at the project prior to submitting a bid for the work of this SECTION SCOPE OF WORK A. Furnish and install the following, as shown on the Drawings and specified herein: 1. Shelving, fixed and adjustable, with metal standards, brackets, and hardware. 2. Prefinished custom fabricated classroom wall and base cabinets, work room wall and base cabinets, reception and library desks, mailbox units, and work stations, including countertops with side and back splashes, backs, bottoms and drawers, and all necessary hardware. 3. Prefinished veneer faced, veneer core plywood, with solid edge-banding, for all new plywood surfaces and millwork construction noted on the drawings to be "hardwood veneer plywood" or "hardwood plywood" for natural finish. 4. Prefinished solid hardwood for all new millwork, sills, trim and miscellaneous items noted on the drawings as "hardwood". 5. Solid poplar for wood trim designated on the drawings to be painted. 6. Prefinished display cases, including glass doors, tack surfaces, and all necessary hardware. B. Install all new wood doors, metal doors and frames, and finish hardware, as furnished under SECTION HOLLOW METALWORK, SECTION WOOD AND PLASTIC DOORS, and SECTION HARDWARE AND SPECIALTIES, respectively, except as otherwise specified hereunder. C. Install toilet accessories so specified and furnished under SECTION TOILET AND BATH ACCESSORIES. D. Install registers and grilles furnished by SECTION HVAC in cabinetry

2 1.03 RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE A. The following work is to be performed under the designated SECTIONS: 1.04 SUBMITTALS 1. Rough blocking, furring, nailers, plywood sheathing, and other items of rough carpentry: SECTION ROUGH CARPENTRY. 2. Wood finish flooring: SECTION WOOD AND ATHLETIC FLOORING. 3. Pre-manufactured display cases: SECTION CHALKBOARDS AND TACKBOARDS. 4. Outlets at cabinetry and light fixtures in display cases: SECTION ELECTRICAL. A. Submit complete shop drawings in accordance with the requirements of SECTION SUBMITTALS. B. Include large-scale fabrication details and joinery of finish carpentry items furnished hereunder, and a schedule and cuts of hardware therefore. C. Make actual field measurements of all condition receiving casework and shelving, and include such dimensions on shop drawings. Dimensions indicated on the Contract Drawings, therefore, will be subject to minor corrections. D. Submit the following samples in accordance with the requirements of SECTION SUBMITTALS. 1. Solid wood and plywood - 6 x 6 x 3/4 inch of each species proposed for use, with designation of locations to be used. 2. Plastic laminate - Manufacturer's standard sample chain, in complete range of solid colors and in specified texture, for selection by the Architect. 3. Natural Finish - Samples of colors and finish on each species specified WORKMANSHIP AND QUALITY STANDARDS A. General - Refer to the Drawings for details of new finish, trim, casework and millwork items. 1. Shelving, casework, finish and trim shall conform to design and detail as shown. Where practicable, work shall be finished and assembled at the mill. 2. All millwork and trim shall be furnished smooth and free from all machine and tool marks that will show through the finish. Nails used to fasten finish work will be set to receive putty or wood filler

3 3. All joints will be tight and formed to conceal shrinkage. Miters 4 inches or more from heel to point shall be glued. 4. Finish shall be made in as long lengths as possible and jointed only where solid fastenings can be made. B. Quality Standards - The quality standards of the Architectural Woodwork Institute for PREMIUM GRADE are hereby made a part of this SECTION , except as otherwise noted herein, and all workmanship shall conform to the requirements for premium grade set forth herein. C. Material References - The references to the various wood panel products used herein shall be as classified and characterized by Architectural Woodwork Institute Quality Standards, 6th Edition 1994, Section 200, Panel Products

4 PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 FINISH, TRIM AND CASEWORK MATERIALS A. General - Materials required for items of new finish trim, shelving, and casework shall be as follows. (Note: all hardwood to receive natural finish shall be prefinished): 1. Hardwood: Plain sawn select white maple, AWI grade I, for natural finish. 2. Hardwood Veneer Plywood: Select white maple veneer plywood - Plain sliced veneer plywood, slip-matched, AWI grade AA for natural finish. Core shall be medium density particleboard (MDP) or veneer core as specified for the particular application. Plywood shall conform to AWI standards for premium grade. 3. Poplar: Yellow poplar, AWI grade II, to be field painted. B. Panel products for the construction of cabinets, counters, and other finish carpentry items shall be as follows: 1. Cabinet Doors and Drawer fronts: a. For doors and drawer fronts with natural finish: Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) with hardwood veneer on both sides and solid hardwood edge banding on all exposed edges. b. For doors and drawers with plastic laminate: MDF with the same grade plastic laminate on all (6) surfaces. 2. Base and overhead Cabinet Carcass: a. Natural Finish Cabinets 1. Panels exposed to view on the outside of cabinet: MDF with hardwood veneer on both faces, and solid hardwood edge banding on all exposed edges. 2. Face frames and any exposed door stops or trim: solid hardwood. 3. Panels not exposed to view on the outside of the cabinet and backs or bottoms: particle board with melamine. 3. Plastic laminate finish cabinets. a. All panels except backs and bottoms: Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) with melamine finish inside cabinet and plastic laminate on all surfaces visible from outside the cabinet. Backs and bottoms MDF or MDP with melamine finish

5 4. Shelving inside enclosed base and overhead cabinets: MDF with melamine finish and performed PVC edgebanding. 5. Shelving for all uses other than inside enclosed cabinets shall be Veneer Core plywood. Shelves for natural finish shall be hardwood veneer with solid edgebanding. Shelving with plastic laminate shall be plastic laminate on all exposed (6) surfaces. 6. Countertops: a. Countertops with sinks: Phenolic resin particleboard. Counters installed over base cabinets shall be one layer of 3/4" material with laminate balancing sheet under counter. b. Counters and work surfaces without sinks: Medium Density Particleboard. Counters over base cabinets shall be one layer of 3/4" material with laminate balancing sheet. c. All countertops not installed over base cabinets shall be two layers of 3/4" material. 7. Plastic Laminate inch thick, high-pressure laminate, meeting or exceeding the performance standards of NEMA, Class I, in a low, nondirective texture, in solid colors and metallic foil finishes as shown on the drawings and as selected by the Architect. Provide balancing sheet of the same thickness of plastic laminate for all plastic laminate surfaces. Interior surfaces so noted shall receive low-pressure (melamine) surfacing material. 8. Cement - For application of laminated plastic - 3M Brand Fastbond 10 or approved equal. 9. Glue - For lamination and fabrication of wood and plywood items - Exterior Grade, phenolic resin glue. 10. Nails - For finish and trim items - 6D or 8D coated or galvanized finish nails. 11. Screws - Flathead galvanized or stainless steel wood screws, of the appropriate size. 12. Panel adhesive as recommended by manufacturer. 13. Tacksurface Linoleum resilient tackable surface material,, Bulletin Board as manufactured by FORBO Linoleum, Inc. Hazeton, PA, or approved equal. Tacksurface material shall be of natural materials consisting of linseed oil, granulated cork, resin binders and dry pigments mixed and calendared onto a natural burlap backing. Color shall extend throughout the 1/4 inch thickness of material

6 2.02 HARDWARE FOR CASEWORK, SHELVING, AND PARTITION WORK A. General - Refer to the Drawings for various new casework, shelving, and partition, and provide all hardware therefore. Unless otherwise noted, finish of all exposed-to-view hardware shall be US26D. All hardware shall be as specified on the Drawings, or approved equal. B. Hardware and Accessories - To establish a level of quality, design and function, Drawings are based on products by manufacturers listed in the schedule shown on the Drawings. Hardware by other manufacturers will be considered for approval as an equal by the Architect upon receipt of adequate supporting data and samples PREFINISH WORK A. Factory finished millwork shall be in accordance with AWI Division 1500-S-4- Finish System Standards for ʻPremium Gradeʼ. Factory finish shall be ultraviolet (UV) cured polyurethance to comply with EPA Title 5 guidelines for Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions limitations. Finish shall meet or exceed performance standards of TR-6 catalyzed polyurethane. Millwork shall be furnished with a clear finish. B. Touch-up all field cuts and imperfections with polyurethane to match pre-finished surfaces GLASS DOORS FOR DISPLAY CASES A. Clear tempered safety glass 1/4 inch, minimum (3/8 inch thick at large lights and doors) heat tempered, annealed, polished clear float glass, PPG Herculite, LOF Tuf-Flex, ASG TRU-TEMP, or approved equal. Edges shall be ground where glass panels and doors are frameless. B. Glass Door Hardware Labora Series sliding glass door fittings as manufactured by Hafele, or approved equal. Furnish and install all glass retainers, track runners and locks required for a complete installation

7 PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 FABRICATION OF NEW CASEWORK AND SHELVING A. Except as otherwise specified hereunder, fabricate all work in strict accordance with the workmanship standards set forth in the A.W.I. Quality Standards Premium Grade, Section 200, 400, 500, and 600 and the approved shop drawings FABRICATION AND INSTALLATION OF WOOD TRIM A. Fabricate and install all standing and running trim in accordance with the workmanship standards set forth in the A.W.I. Quality Standards Section 300 for Premium Grade, and the approved shop drawings INSTALLATION OF PRESSED STEEL FRAMES A. Erect all pressed steel frames, furnished under SECTION , in accordance with the approved shop drawings and frame schedule. Anchor clips for frames in metal stud partitions will be secured to studs by the drywall construction erector. B. Provide rigid temporary bracing for frames, as required to ensure maintenance of positioning, and remove only after frames have been permanently anchored HANGING AND FITTING OF DOORS AND METAL SIDELIGHT PANELS A. Receive, store and be responsible for hardware as furnished under SECTION HARDWARE AND SPECIALTIES. B. Fit all hinged doors to their respective openings. Install metal sidelight panels as indicated on the Drawings. C. Install fire rated and non-rated doors in accordance with NFPA 80, manufacturer's instructions, and UL and Massachusetts Building Code requirements. Warp, bow and cup in wood doors shall not exceed 1/4 inch over a 36 x 84 inch surface. D. Fit all hardware accurately, from templates supplied with hardware apply securely, and adjust carefully. E. Should pre-finished wood doors require cutting or remachining, seal exposed surfaces with two brush coats of oil base polyurethane or varnish before hanging. F. Prior to Substantial Completion of the Contract, and before building is occupied, inspect entire building with Architect, to ensure that each piece of finish hardware is undamaged and in perfect order and that the proper key for each lock is identified

8 3.05 INSTALLATION OF TOILET ACCESSORIES A. Perform installation of accessories furnished under SECTION TOILET AND BATH ACCESSORIES, in accordance with the templates and instructions furnished by the accessory manufacturer. Refer to the Drawings for various locations REHABILITATIONS AND REPAIRS TO EXISTING LOBBY WOOD DOORS, TRIM, AND A. Perform all required carpentry modifications to these items, including cutting as required to ensure proper fitting of new patching woodwork. Make joints between new work and existing as tight as possible to minimize the transition of materials FINAL INSPECTION A. Just prior to completion of all work under this SECTION , the General Contractor, with the Architect, shall inspect all portions of the work and shall make any required adjustments or corrections to the work.
