Preparation for installing utilities SUBMITTALS SECTION ARCHITECTURAL WOOD CASEWORK A. Shop Drawings: Indicate materials, component profiles, fastening methods, jointing details, and accessories. 1. Minimum Scale of Detail Drawings: 1-1/2 inch to 1 foot. 2. Provide the information required by AWI/AWMAC/WI Architectural Woodwork Standards (AWS). B. Shop Drawings: Indicate materials, component profiles and elevations, assembly methods, joint details, fastening methods, accessory listings, hardware location and schedule of finishes. C. Product Data: Provide data for hardware accessories. D. Samples: Submit actual sample items of proposed pulls, hinges, shelf standards, and locksets, demonstrating hardware design, quality, and finish. E. Samples: Submit color chips of laminates representing manufacturer's full range of available colors and patterns. F. Color Chart: Submit one color chart illustrating manufacturers full range of colors and finishes QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Perform cabinet construction in accordance with AWI/AWMAC Architectural Woodwork Quality Standards Illustrated, Custom quality, unless other quality is indicated for specific items. B. Manufacturer Qualifications: Company specializing in manufacturing the products specified in this section with minimum five years of documented experience. C. Quality Certification: Provide inspection and quality certification of completed custom cabinets in accordance with AWI/AWMAC Quality Certification Program MOCK-UP A. Provide mock-up of typical base cabinet, wall cabinet, and countertop, including hardware, finishes, and plumbing accessories. B. Locate where directed by Owner's representative C. Mock-up may remain as part of the Work if approved DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Protect units from moisture damage FIELD CONDITIONS A. During and after installation of custom cabinets, maintain temperature and humidity conditions in building spaces at same levels planned for occupancy. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 CABINETS A. Quality Grade: Unless otherwise indicated provide products of quality specified by AWI//AWMAC/WI Architectural Woodwork Standards (AWS) for Custom Grade. B. 2 2.02 WOOD-BASED COMPONENTS A. Wood fabricated from old growth timber is not permitted PANEL MATERIALS A. Particleboard: ANSI A208.1; medium density industrial type as specified in AWI/AWMAC Architectural Woodwork Quality Standards Illustrated, composed of wood chips bonded with interior grade adhesive under heat and pressure; sanded faces; thickness as required; use for components indicated on drawings. B. Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF): ANSI A208.2; type as specified in AWI/AWMAC Architectural Woodwork Quality Standards Illustrated; composed of wood fibers pressure bonded with moisture resistant adhesive to suit application; sanded faces; thickness as required. 1. Use for painted components and concealed components. 2. Use as backing for plastic laminate unless otherwise indicated. C. Plywood for Non-Decorative Purposes: NIST PS 1, Interior rated adhesives, core of wood plies from listed species unless otherwise indicated, thickness as indicated or as required by application. 1. Semi-Exposed Surfaces: APA A-B Grade, rotary cut redwood face veneer. 2. Concealed Surfaces: PS 1; APA B-B Grade, rotary cut Douglas fir face veneer. D. Hardboard: AHA A135.4; Pressed wood fiber with resin binder, Class 1 - Tempered, 1/4 inch thick, smooth two sides (S2S); use for drawer bottoms, dust panels, and other components indicated on drawings LAMINATE MATERIALS A. Concealed Joint Fasteners: Threaded steel. F. Grommets: Standard plastic grommets for cut-outs, in color as selected by Architect. G. Recessed Metal Trim: Basis-of-Design: The trim specified in this section are based upon Fry Reglet Corporation Trim. Drawer Construction Technique: Dovetail joints. D. Assembly: Shop assemble cabinets for delivery to site in units easily handled and to permit passage through building openings. E. Edging: Fit shelves, doors, and exposed edges with specified edging. Do not use more than one piece for any single length. F. Fitting: When necessary to cut and fit on site, provide materials with ample allowance for cutting. Provide matching trim for scribing and site cutting. G. Plastic Laminate: Apply plastic laminate finish in full uninterrupted sheets consistent with manufactured sizes. Fit corners and joints hairline; secure with concealed fasteners. 5 2. Cap exposed plastic laminate finish edges with material of same finish and pattern unless detailed otherwise. H. Matching Wood Grain: Comply with requirements of quality standard for specified Grade and as follows: 1. Provide sequence matching across each elevation. 2. Carry figure of cabinet fronts to toe kicks. I. Mechanically fasten back splash to countertops with steel brackets at 16 inches on center. J. Provide cutouts for plumbing fixtures. Verify locations of cutouts from on-site dimensions. Prime paint cut edges FACTORY FINISHING A. Sand work smooth and set exposed nails and screws. B. For opaque finishes, apply wood filler in exposed nail and screw indentations and sand smooth. C. On items to receive transparent finishes, use wood filler matching or blending with surrounding surfaces and of types recommended for applied finishes. D. Finish work in accordance with AWI/AWMAC/WI Architectural Woodwork Standards (AWS), Section 5 - Finishing for Grade specified and as follows: 1. Transparent: a. System - 1, Lacquer, Nitrocellulose. b. Stain: As selected by Architect. c. Sheen: Flat. 2. Opaque: a. System - 1, Lacquer, Nitrocellulose. b. Color: As selected by Architect. c. Sheen: Flat. E. Finish work in accordance with AWI/AWMAC Architectural Woodwork Quality Standards Illustrated, Section 1500, Nitrocellulose Lacquer, Transparent. F. Seal stain and varnish internal exposed to view and semi-concealed surfaces. Brush apply only. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION A. Verify adequacy of backing and support framing. B. Verify location and sizes of utility rough-in associated with work of this section INSTALLATION A. Set and secure custom cabinets in place, assuring that they are rigid, plumb, and level. B. Use fixture attachments in concealed locations for wall mounted components. C. Use concealed joint fasteners to align and secure adjoining cabinet units and countertops. D. Carefully scribe casework abutting other components, with maximum gaps of 1/32 inch. Do not use additional overlay trim for this purpose. E. Secure cabinets and counter bases to floor using appropriate angles and anchorages. F. Countersink anchorage devices at exposed locations. Conceal with solid wood plugs of species to match surrounding wood; finish flush with surrounding surfaces ADJUSTING A. Test installed work for rigidity and ability to support loads. B.
