I went with 1 x 3 s because the overall cost was about half of what it would be if I purchased material that was wide enough to make the sides without having to glue boards together. If you do not mind the additional cost then you could purchase a few 1 x 12 s instead. 23-3/4 Front View Side View I only used glue on this project so there are no metal fasteners needed. 9" 18

Since the bottom is so wide, and it isn t a good idea to try and glue together so many boards in one glue up, I split it into

You will need four solid sides (green), two bottoms (brown), and eight end posts (pink). Note: the end posts are glued face to face but the bottom and side are all end to end. Make sure you let these sit long enough for the glue to completely dry. Mine sat for around six hours. Since the bottom is so wide, and it isn t a good idea to try and glue together so many boards in one glue up, I split it into two. However the bottom needs to be planed down to 1/2 later and it s best to do that before doing the second glue up. So once the glue is dry, take them out of the clamps and plane them down to 1/2 then glue them together to make one large bottom.

3/8 Page 4 Make the End Posts For the end posts you will need to take the eight end posts and cut them down so that they are perfectly square at 1 1/4 x 1 1/4. I did this at my table saw.

Once the posts are cut square then switch out your blade for a dado stack that is 1/2 and cut in a dado on two adjacent sides, it doesn t matter which two you pick. This dado is 1/4 deep and is 3/8 in from the edge. If you do not have a dado stack then you can use a regular blade and just make multiple passes. I decided that I wanted the end posts to be round, but of course you could leave your posts square. To round mine over I used a small roll of tape to trace a curve on both ends of all the posts. Then I used a belt sander to sand down the material until I liked the profile. 1/2"

Bottom Dados While you have a dado stack in

6 Bottom Dados While you have a dado stack in the table go ahead and cut a dado 1/4 up from the bottom on all the solid sides as well as in four slat boards. This will be used later to hold the bottom. 1/4" Cut Handles Now cut in the handles. On the slats, make sure to not cut in a handle on the same slats that have the dados. Page 6 Plane Everything Now take the slats and solid sides and plane them down so that they fit perfectly in the dados you cut in earlier.

Make the Front/Back Assemble the front and back sides.

They fit right inside of the dados so they are not seen. They need to be 1/2 wide, 1/4 deep, and 5/16 tall.

When you are planing down the boards, make sure the boards go in with the dados facing down or the planer will effect how deep your dado is. Make the Front/Back Assemble the front and back sides. To make the slats spaced apart you will first need to cut some small spacers, these are not on the cut list since they are so tiny. They fit right inside of the dados so they are not seen. They need to be 1/2 wide, 1/4 deep, and 5/16 tall. Place a good amount of glue in the inside dado of the end posts then start adding the slats and spacers. Make sure the slat with the dado is placed on the bottom (facing inside) and the slat with the handle is placed on top. Clamp them together until the glue is dry.

I found it easiest to assemble these by slipping the two solid sides on one slatted side first, then sliding the bottom into place before attaching the fourth side. Place a few clamps on the basket to keep everything snuggly in place while the glue dries.
