PRESCHOOL CRAFTS PRESCHOOL VBS CRAFT ACTIVITIES Discussion tips are given for each day. The purpose of the discussion is to help them understand God s plan for them, and ties the craft activities into the lesson and into God s plan. Activity sheets are also suggested for each day. These activity sheets are designed to be used when all other lessons and activities have been completed or as activities for early arrivers. These sheets may also be used as take home sheets to help them review and remember the lessons. MONDAY Craft: 1. FLUORESCENT PHYLACTERIES Prior to class: Copy verse onto fluorescent paper. Punch holes in bags. (POSTER) Luke 10:27 NASB You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart Directions: 1. Take two plastic bags. Use a hole punch to make a hole in all four corners of both bags. Take four 30 inch lengths of yarn. Thread one end of the yarn through both holes on one side of your bags. Repeat on the other side. Do the same thing with or other bag. 2. Copy the verse onto two pieces of colored paper. Place one of your verse papers into each bag. Zip the bags shut. Tie one phylactery around your wrist as a wristband. Tie the other around your head as a headband. Discuss: God wants us to remember His Words. God told his people that they were supposed to talk about His Word constantly. He even told the people to wear God s Word around their wrist and around their heads. God commands His people to remember His Word. God knows that if we think about His Word, we ll remember what God is like and what makes Him happy. Then we can

PRESCHOOL CRAFTS 2 begin to make better choices too. Also, remembering His Word will help us love Him more. (The Encyclopedia of Bible Crafts for Preschoolers, Group Publishing) Supplies: (POSTER) Luke 10:27 NASB You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart Yarn (wrap one end with a piece of tape to make it easier to thread through the bags) Fluorescent colored paper Markers Hole punch Snack-size Ziplok bags (resealable) 2. STAINED GLASS TISSUE PAPER STAR ORNAMENT POSTER GENESIS 1:16 NASB And God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. Directions: Prior to class, use the larger star template to cut out two stars from the black cardstock. Center the smaller star template over the large ones and trace around it. Cut the centers out of the stars. You will need two stars per child. These will be used to form a frame for the ornament. Cut the tissue paper into 1 inch pieces. 1. Put various colors of tissue paper into the zip lock bag. Press all of the air out of the bag and seal it. 2. Place the bag between the two star shapes, matching the points of the stars. 3. Slide the two ends of the yarn between the two black stars at the top point so that the yarn forms a loop. Glue them in place. 4. Staple or glue the stars together on every side. 5. Cut around the outer edge of the star to remove the excess bag and tissue paper. (as seen on Oriental Trading website)

PRESCHOOL CRAFTS 3 Discuss: Because God is all-powerful, He can make anything. One of the ways we see His power is to look at space and all the wonderful things He has made. Stars are a perfect example of His power! There are big stars and small stars, stars that look old and stars that look new. No one has ever seen a star form, so God could have made all the stars when He created everything else. Do stars grow old and die? No one really knows. (This is a perfect opportunity to use some pictures from the Hubble telescope to showcase the glory and majesty of our God!) What we do know is that our Creator God is very, very awesome!!! Why would God go to so much trouble to create so many billions of stars and celestial bodies? POSTER Rom 1:19-20 New Living Translation 19 They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. 20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. (This poster is in the elementary teaching materials for Monday) SO WE CAN KNOW HIM!!! GOD CREATED YOU TO KNOW HIM!!! Supplies: 2 pieces of black cardstock per child 1 sandwich size zip lock bag per child (with no writing on the bag) Various colors of tissue paper cut into 1 inch pieces Yarn 12 inches per child Scissors Glue Star template TUESDAY Craft: SAY YES TO GOD WALL REMINDER POSTER Acts 5:29 We must obey God Directions:

PRESCHOOL CRAFTS 4 Prior to class, cut the felt into 8 ½ x14 rectangles. Copy the label for each child. Cut yarn into 36 lengths. 1. Show how to cut slits at the bottom of the felt to create a fringed look. 2. Help the students fold over the felt tops slightly and glue them, leaving a small opening. 3. Instruct the children to insert the dowel rod through the felt openings. 4. Tie yarn to each end of the dowel rod. 5. Allow the children to color the labels, cut them out and glue them to the fronts of the felt. The children also can glue colored sequins, etc, around the labels as they wish. (taken from More Bible Crafts on a Shoestring Budget Craft Foam and Felt, Rainbow Publishers, p 28) Discuss: Adam and Eve had a choice to make. They could obey God and not eat the fruit on that special tree. Or, they could listen to the serpent that Satan was using to disguise himself, and disobey God. Which one did they choose? (They chose to listen to Satan) How did they disobey God? (They ate the fruit) What happened as a result? (Sin entered the world) Who did sin affect? (Every person who has ever lived) We all have a choice to make. We can choose to obey God or disobey God. It is very important that we obey God. (Show poster of Acts 5:29) When we obey Him, we are saying Yes to God! Why is it important to obey God? (Because sin causes bad consequences both for us and for other people) What are some sins we need to stay away from? (go over the list that will go on their banner: lying, stealing, cheating, disobeying, gossip, other gods, unkind words. Explain that there are also other sins besides these that we need to stay away from, such as using drugs, hurting other people or animals, etc.) When we ask Jesus to be our Savior, He gives us the ability to obey Him and not do the kinds of sins we have been talking about. Any time we need Him to help us do what is right, all we have to do is ask Him, and He will help us! Supplies: Felt pattern and label Scissors

PRESCHOOL CRAFTS 5 Markers Felt 12 dowel rod yarn Crayons Glue WEDNESDAY Sequins, jewels, or other decorative items Craft: BASKET OF LOAVES AND FISH POSTER John 6:35 NASB Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger (This poster is in your teaching materials for Wednesday) Directions: Prior to class, copy the fish patterns on blue or orange cardstock. Copy the loaves patterns on brown paper. Each child will need two fish and five loaves. 1. To make the basket, use a brown paper lunch bag. Cut each side of the bag down 2 and fold. Tape around each corner to reinforce. 2. Cut a handle from brown craft paper or another bag. 3. Have children write Bible verses on the fish and loaves, one verse on each. (Use Scripture memory verses or verses from the lessons) 4. Decorate the fish with glitter glue, markers or crayons as desired. 5. Loaves and basket may also be decorated as desired. (For example, they can weave paper strips to go around their basket.) 6. Place the fish and loaves in the basket. (Adapted from Easy Christian Crafts, by Linda Standke, Carson-Dellosa Publishing Company, Inc. p 38) Discuss: see? In today s lesson, a huge crowd of 5000 people saw a miracle! What miracle did they How do you think the people felt when they realized that Jesus was going to feed everyone?

PRESCHOOL CRAFTS 6 How do you think they felt when they saw all the food left over? (Be sure to point out that this extra food, shows Jesus ability to provide, not just what we need, but even more than we need!) How do you think the boy felt when he saw what Jesus did with his lunch? (Show John 6:35 Poster) Later that night Jesus said, I am the Bread of Life. What do you think He meant by that? In the Bible, the word bread is often used to mean any kind of food. During the time that Jesus lived, they didn t have junk food like candy, soft drinks, cookies, pizza, etc. All the food they had was good for them. They also didn t have refrigerators or freezers or metal cans to keep food from spoiling. One of the main foods in their diet was bread, because it was made from grain, and they could keep grain for a long time and it wouldn t spoil. They usually ate bread every day. Everyone has to eat to live. If people stop eating, they will eventually die. When Jesus said I am the Bread of Life, He was referring to the food they eat every day, which usually was bread. The bread they ate every day kept their bodies alive. When He said, I am the Bread of Life, He didn t mean that He was literally a loaf of bread. He meant that believing in Him gives us spiritual life, just like eating an actual loaf of bread kept those people physically alive. What is spiritual life? (Allow children to answer. This will help you gauge how much they really understand.) Spiritual life is having a relationship, a friendship with Jesus, that lasts forever and ever. We get it when we ask Jesus to forgive us and take control of our lives from now own. When Jesus said, he who comes to Me shall not hunger, He didn t mean that we wouldn t ever want to eat food again. What He means is that we will be satisfied with our relationship, our friendship with Him, and with the peace and happiness He gives us! Supplies: Brown paper lunch bags, 1 per child Orange or light blue cardstock for fish Glitter glue (optional) Scissors Tape Brown cardstock for loaves

PRESCHOOL CRAFTS 7 Stapler Crayons or markers Craft: SHEEP CARDS me POSTERJohn 10:14 "I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know Directions: Prior to class, copy the card front on colored cardstock, one per child. Make the back by tracing the card front on a matching piece of cardstock, then cut out the card front and back. Cut a ½ x 2 black felt strip into four equal sections and cut a V- shape on one end of each section, making one set for each child. Cut two 6: lengths of ribbon or yarn for each child. 1. On the front of the cards, have each child apply glue to the wool area around the lamb s face and body. 2. Apply cotton balls to the glue until the sheep s body is completely covered. 3. Have each student hold a card s front and back together as you punch two holes near the top of the card where indicated. 4. Allow the students to insert ribbons through the holes and tie them. 5. Instruct the children to glue felt hooves on each of their lambs feet. (taken from More Bible Crafts on a Shoestring Budget Craft Foam and Felt, Rainbow Publishers, p 84) Discuss: What does a shepherd do? (Takes care of sheep: Makes sure they have food, water, keeps them healthy, makes sure they are safe from wild animals, from falling off cliffs, etc.) How do you think the shepherd felt about his sheep? (allow children to answer) Why do you think Jesus says that He is like a good shepherd to us? (allow children to answer) How do you think sheep feel about their shepherd? (allow children to answer) The sheep love their shepherd and follow him. They trust their shepherd. Jesus is our Shepherd because He loves us and protects us. What did He do to show us how much He loves us? (The Good Shepherd lays down His life for His sheep. Jesus laid down His life for us when He died on the cross. He was protecting us by taking our place, our punishment for our sins.)

PRESCHOOL CRAFTS 8 THURSDAY How should we feel about our Shepherd? (allow children to answer. Their answers should include trust and love) Supplies: Colored cardstock Card front and back Scissors Black felt Curling Ribbon Craft glue Cotton balls Hole punch Craft: FOLLOW-ME FOOTPRINTS (POSTER) John 12:26 Jesus said, Whoever serves Me must follow Me; and where I am, My servant also will be. Directions: 1. Trace around both feet of each child using two sheets of white cardstock, one sheet for each foot. 2. Allow children to cut their footprints out. Be sure to write their names on the back. 3. Allow children to decorate their footprints with the design of their choice, geometrics, hearts, etc. Glitter, sequins, pompoms, etc. can be used if you desire. 4. Attach a yarn loop to the toe to hang them. Discuss: Jesus is our Good Shepherd. We can follow Him because He gives us faith. What does it mean to follow Jesus? (Listen to Him, Obey what He says, Love Him, Serve Him and others) Where can we find what Jesus says? (The Bible) Put your footprints near the door that you usually go in and out. When you leave your house, remember that Jesus, our Good Shepherd helps us serve Him an follow Him every day, wherever we go.

PRESCHOOL CRAFTS 9 Supplies: Two pieces of white cardstock per child Pencil or marker to trace footprint Scissors Yarn Markers/crayons Decorating supplies such as glitter, sequins, foam shapes, etc. (Optional) Craft: JOHN 3:16 MOBILES (POSTER) John 3:16 NLT "For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. PRIOR TO CLASS: Cut one of each of the following shapes out of cardstock for each child: A red heart, a blue circle, an oval, a brown cross, a white cloud. Cut the yarn to 6-foot lengths. DIRECTIONS: 1. Show the John 3:16 poster to the kids. 2. On the red hearts, let older preschoolers write God in pen. (You can have the words written ahead of time for younger preschoolers.) Let children draw green land on the blue circles to represent the world. Then add their names. Direct each child to take one length of yarn and tape the shape to one end of the yarn. 3. Let each child draw a happy face on the oval and glue on a fabric scrap for clothing, to represent that He gave His one and only Son. Encourage each child to place a sticker of Jesus on the cross to represent that everyone who believes in Him. (Option: Have them draw Jesus face with markers.) Direct each child to take two more lengths of yarn and tape each shape to one end of a piece of yarn. 4. Children can glue cotton balls to the clouds to represent shall not perish but have eternal life. Let children tape these shapes to one end of the remaining lengths of yarn. Make a loop at the other end. Fold all of the yarn lengths in half, and knot them at the midsection. Use the loop to hang the mobile. (From The Encyclopedia of Bible Crafts for Preschoolers, Group Publishing p184) Discuss: God sent Jesus as a baby because He loves us so much. Jesus loves us too. He told us about the sheep and the Shepherd to show us He loves us.

PRESCHOOL CRAFTS 10 SUPPLIES: Cardstock fabric scraps cotton balls glue yarn masking tape stickers of Jesus scissors pens FRIDAY Craft: PAPER PLATE TOMB Directions: 1. Copy the inside tomb pattern onto white paper. 2. Copy the stone pattern onto white cardstock. 3. Color each pattern. Cut out on the dotted lines. 4. Glue the inside of the tomb pattern to the center of the paper plate. 5. Holding the stone pattern in one hand, push the brass fastener through it where it is indicated on the pattern. 6. Push the fastener (already through the stone) through the paper plate where indicated on the pattern. 7. Roll the stone away from the tomb opening and see that Jesus is indeed alive! (Easy Christian Crafts, Linda Standke Carson-Dellosa Publishing Company) Discuss: When Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James reached the tomb where Jesus was buried they saw that the stone had been rolled away and that an angel sat inside the tomb. Review the resurrection story with the children to reinforce the fact that Jesus is alive1 Supplies:

PRESCHOOL CRAFTS 11 Stone and tomb patterns White craft paper plates White card stock White paper Scissors Glue stick Crayons or markers Brass Paper fasteners Craft: LUMINARY BAGS John 8:12 AMP He said, I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me will not be walking in the dark, but will have the Light which is Life. (This is in Wednesday s lesson materials) Directions: 1. Have children draw a few star shapes on their bags and cut them out. 2. Have children write the above verse from Thursday s lesson on their bag. 3. Allow children to decorate their bags with other space designs using markers or crayons. 4. Place votive candle in bag. Discuss: Why is it important to have light? What does light do for us? (it helps us see) Let s pretend that we are in a room that is completely dark, no moonlight or starlight coming through the window, no light shining through the crack under the door. It is TOTALLY dark! To make matters worse, we are unfamiliar with the room. We don t know where the furniture is, what kind of furniture is in the room, how big the room is, etc. How hard would it be to walk around without bumping into something? (Let kids respond) It would be very hard, wouldn t it? We would need a flashlight, or lantern, or lamp, candle, a cellphone or other electronic device that emits light, a fire, or even a match. Anything that gives light would help us! Of course, the best light would be to have the bright sun shining through lots of windows! Then we would be able to see everything! When Jesus said, I am the light of the world He was comparing Himself to a bright light like the sun shining in a totally dark world. The world is dark because of sin. Jesus said that the person who follows Him won t be walking around in the dark,
