1 SEEC is a unique opportunity for educators from around the globe to meet and attend interactive STEM sessions in order to share the excitement of space with their students and community. After attending the 23rd Space Exploration Educators Conference, attendees will return ready to ignite and inspire the minds of their students! Some examples of what this conference has to offer: Network with the top scientists, engineers and educators from the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan. Hear keynote speeches by leaders in the space program. Receive a multitude of hands-on lessons and supplies that will inspire your students and enhance your classroom. In this fun, interactive card game, students experience the fundamentals of the engineering design process, with a hands-on, critical-thinking, authentic approach. Using collaboration and problem-solving skills, they develop a mission that meets constraints (budget, mass, power) and criteria (significant science return). This activity can introduce many activities in technology education, including robotics and rocketry. Learn about the current rovers on Mars and future missions. Grades: K-12 Subjects: All Collapsing Star - Modeling Black Hole Formation Phyliss Friello, Baltimore School for the Arts, MD Natalie Soto, Downey Unified School District, CA This activity models the collapse of a star and formation of a black hole. Unlike other available models, this method clearly illustrates the gravitational field before and after the black hole formation as well as formation of the singularity. Associated topics include universal gravitation, gravitational field strength, life cycles of stars, warping of space-time and black holes. Worksheets included with the activity cover the calculation of field strength and Schwarzchild radius. Grades: 9-12 Subject: Science Exploration and Invisible Forces Veronica Leija, JSC Education, Houston Brandon Hargis, JSC Education, Houston To make changes in a spacecraft s speed and direction, NASA often uses gravity. To get what s called a gravity assist, NASA passes a spacecraft close to a planet or a moon. Participants will be challenged to use invisible forces to control the velocity of a model spacecraft. In this session, we will introduce project and inquiry based learning concepts from the High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) program and discuss their applications to the engineering design process. Please read carefully. Your visit to NASA Johnson Space Center is a special event. You will enter working facilities subject to strict safety and security policies. Please follow the direction of your host escort at all times. It is essential that all members of the group stay together and not venture away from their NASA escort. Wandering into restricted areas constitutes a security violation and could result in the termination of your visit. Your visit will require walking and standing for extended periods and may involve climbing several flights of stairs. Guests should wear comfortable, flat, fully enclosed shoes (no high heels, sandals, flip-flops, slides, mules, Crocs, etc.) during their visit. We also recommend that guests wear slacks (instead of shorts or skirts) as an additional safety precaution. Cameras are welcome in all facilities unless instructed otherwise. However, photography of individuals is discouraged without permission. Attention all non-u.s. citizens If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must fill out a NASA JSC Security Form in order to attend the NASA tours. Get more information on this topic by attending the companion session Art and Science: A Dialogue in Real Time on Thursday 12:45 2:15 p.m. 4:30 5:30 p.m. Keynote: Succeed Like an Astronaut Inspire the Future Generation Leroy Chiao, Veteran Astronaut, One Orbit Commander Dr. Leroy Chiao presents the exciting sides of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and encourages wonderment, helping others to overcome fears and insecurities about these subjects. The presentation also includes character elements, the process of overcoming hardships, and the importance of making the right choices. These elements are presented through Dr. Chiao s personal experiences as a young person. The topic of STEM is part of his message, but the focus is on the importance of dreams and having the courage to pursue them. Dr. Leroy Chiao is no stranger to this world. Educated as a chemical engineer, Dr. Leroy Chiao spent fifteen years as a NASA astronaut and flew on four space missions on space shuttles, a Russian Soyuz spacecraft and aboard the International Space Station, where he served as the commander and NASA Science Officer. During his flying career, Dr. Chiao logged nearly 230 days in space and executed six spacewalks in both American and Russian spacesuits, in support of the design and construction of the International Space Station. Friday 8 90 a.m. Keynote: The James Webb Telescope: Our New Eyes in Space Dr. Matthew Greenhouse, Senior Staff Project Scientist, JWST, Maryland The James Webb Space Telescope is the scientific successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. It is a cryogenic infrared space observatory with a 25 m 2 aperture telescope that will extend humanity s high angular resolution view of the universe into the infrared spectrum to reveal early epochs of the universe that the Hubble cannot see. Learn from Dr. Matthew Greenhouse what this telescope can do for us and how we can inspire students to look deeper into space and their futures. Dive further into this topic with the companion session James Webb Telescope Activities for the Classroom on Friday 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday 2:45 3:45 p.m. Keynote: Humans and Robots: Teammates in Successful Space Exploration Nancy Currie-Gregg, NASA Principal Engineer, NASA Astronaut Dan Burbank, NASA Astronaut Space is the perfect venue for international collaborations. Working in such a harsh environment, it is important to rely on teamwork to get the job done. However, it isn't uncommon for humans to partner up with robots for support in a microgravity environment. Hear from experts about the importance of working with various robotic technologies and how they impact space exploration. Learn how they got their start in robotics and what they feel are the best ways to get students engaged at a young age. 5 Space Educator Expedition Crew Program Made possible by generous support from Boeing Space Center Houston is excited to extend the outreach of the Space Exploration Educator Conference by adding a teacher leadership component called the Space Educator Expedition Crew Program. Thirty-six K-12 teachers from across the country have been selected to participate in this exceptional program. Over the next year, they will collaborate in six regional Educator Expedition Crews to develop teacher leadership skills and STEM based learning experiences. It is our goal to empower teachers to build leadership competencies by creating innovative STEM programs for their students, schools and communities. The 2017 crew members are: Amanda Blough, Pennsylvania Becky Busby, Georgia Charlotte Cook, Arkansas Katheen Conrad, Indiana Deborah Elliott, North Carolina Julie Farmer, Tennessee Amy Fetterhoff, Pennsylvania Phillis Friello, Maryland Renee Gamba, Rhode Island Maya Ghosh, New Jersey Jodie Guillen, New Mexico Jill Gillford, Indiana Barbara Gruber, Virginia Jeff Herold, Arizona Alexandra Hill, Missouri Leesa Hubbard,Tennessee Adlena Jacobs, Texas Karen Kingrea, North Carolina Spencer Kiper, Louisiana Diego Martinez, Oregon Lisa Mitchell, California Michelle Mohrweis, Arizona Elisabeth Moore, North Carolina Terry Mynatt, Alaska Lauren Parker, Texas Stacie Pottenger, Georgia Debbie Reynolds, Pennsylvania Katrina Roddenberry, Florida NASA's Centennial Challenges: Space Robotics Challenge The Space Robotics Competition tasks teams with developing and displaying the ability of an R5 robot to effectively assist in the procedures of a NASA mission, such as one to Mars, offering an $1.0M prize pool for successful teams. The competition involves programming a virtual R5 robot through a series of tasks presented in a virtual environment through the Gazebo software. Valeria Rodriguez, Florida Nancy Sills, Georgia Ashlie Smith, Michigan Jessica Strause, Florida Amy Tinnell, Georgia Nathan Tubbs, New York Mary Vaughn, Florida Michael Wilkenson, New York The three tasks are aimed to simulate what a robot may be required to do while assisting a NASA mission to Mars, whether in a preparatory capacity before astronauts arrive or alongside astronauts. The first task involves aligning a communications array. The second task involves repairing a broken solar array. The third task involves identifying and repairing a habitat leak. Winners will be chosen based on their ability to complete these tasks and each of the steps within them, as well as how long it takes to complete the tasks. There will also be a qualifying round, tasking teams to demonstrate autonomous tracking abilities for their virtual R5 robot, which will be required for teams to move towards the main competition. This qualifying round will have prize money attached to it. This challenge has been designed, executed, and supported by NASA s Centennial Challenges Program within the Space Technology Mission Directorate as well as Space Center Houston as our Allied Organization, and Nine Sigma as their partner. Exhibits Friday, Feb. 10, there will be a small exhibit area in the main plaza with representatives from different areas of NASA who will share what is currently taking place in the space program. There will also be a small number of other educational vendors on hand. Exhibit hours: 9 a.m. 1 p.m. New to SEEC? There is an introductory session just for first-time SEEC attendees. In this session, veteran SEEC attendee will go over everything newcomers need to know about the session cards, locations, food, tours, etc. Arrive early on Thursday for a little SEEC 101. When: Thursday, Feb. 10, 7:15 7:45 a.m. Where: Mission Briefing Center Presented by: Brian Ewenson (22-year SEEC presenter/ attendee) Travel Notes Space Center Houston is located between downtown Houston and Galveston. Take I-45 and exit NASA Parkway. The center is approximately three miles east of I-45. Houston has two international airports: Hobby Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Space Center Houston is 17.4 miles south of Hobby and 43.6 miles south of Bush Intercontinental. A listing of conference hotels is provided on page 5. What to Wear? Space Center Houston is usually cool, so bring a sweater or light jacket. Closed toe shoes are required on all tours. Attire is casual for the reception, A Taste of Space. The Friday night banquet attire is semi-formal. Don t forget your dancing shoes! Daily Themes: Thursday - Represent your school or organization. Friday - Wear red to support Women s heart health. Saturday - Bring out your inner geek. Wear your best Geek Attire and maybe even win a prize. Door Prizes & Certificates Door Prizes Following the last session on Saturday, please proceed to the Space Center Theater for the closing Keynote and door prizes. You must be present to win. Certificates Professional Development certificates will be available immediately following the door prizes. Certificate distribution will take place in the Zero-G Diner. On Saturday, anyone who needs to leave the conference early should go to the SEEC Help Table to receive his or her certificate no later than 12:30 p.m. After 12:30 p.m., certificates can be received in the back of the 0-G Diner.

There will be a buffet set up in our Astronaut Gallery area for all attendees. Additional seating in the Zero-G Diner. *Additional Note* Space Center Houston will not serve breakfast at the conference. Taste of Space Epicurean Evening Thursday, Feb. 9, :30-9:30 p.m. at Space Center Houston This event will take place at Space Center Houston from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Attendance is optional with a $20 fee. Tickets can be purchased on our website spacecenterseec.org under the registration button or on site at the conference help table. Taste of Space is a cultural experience showcasing the Clear Lake area's finest restaurants, food and beverages. Food for the evening and two drink tickets for alcoholic/nonalcoholic beverages are included in the fee. Additional drink tickets may be purchased at the event. The reception, "A Taste of Space" is a casual attire event. Bus transportation will be provided to return to conference hotels beginning at 6:30 p.m. and ending at 9:30 p.m. See bus schedule for times. After the 4:30 p.m. keynote, all attendees with tickets to the Taste of Space Event will need to need to remain in Space Center Theater. There you will be entertained with an exciting game while waiting for the event to begin at 6:30 p.m. Everyone not in the theater at that time will be asked to exit Space Center Houston until the Epicurean event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Conference dry fit Polo and T-shirts are available at the help desk. Polo cost: $39 T-shirt cost: $16 Conference Products 23 rd SEEC Banquet Friday, Feb. 10, :15-11:45 p.m. at Space Center Houston The capstone for the conference is the spectacular SEEC banquet, where teachers are treated to a plated meal and will receive two drink tickets. Additional beer and wine will be available to purchase. The banquet attire is business to semi- formal dress. Join us this year as we celebrate old and new friends, a rich history of space exploration and your role in educating the space explorers of tomorrow. There is no need to purchase a ticket for the event if you are registered as a conference presenter or attendee. An additional ticket for a guest can be purchased at the conference help table. The cost is $40. Dance the night away to the music of Rocket Town. Don t forget your dancing shoes! Conference Evaluations SEEC is going paperless for our evaluation system this year. Attendees will receive information in their check-in packets on how to fill out the evaluations for each session as well as the overall conference evaluation. Space Center Houston values attendees opinions and suggestions for SEEC. Join our SEEC Facebook group, a great way to get information from past attendees and keep in touch with new friends from SEEC. Throughout the conference, Space Center Houston Education staff will post contests for prizes. Join the SEEC Facebook group: Comment #SEECSPACE Social Media Digital Scavenger Hunt In this online scavenger hunt game, you will have to complete missions to earn points and compete against fellow attendees. Read mission details carefully, and try to stay on the top of the leader board in the GooseChase app. Points can be taken away if you do not complete it correctly. Bonus points can also be added for creativity. Download the GooseChase iphone or Android app. Join the game by selecting "SEEC 2017 at SCH" from the home screen. (If "SEEC 2017 at Space Center Houston" does not show up on the home screen, you can also search for it by clicking the button on the top right of the screen.) The password for the game is "Orion." The scavenger hunt begins on Monday, Feb. 6 at 8:00 a.m. The scavenger hunt will close on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 1:00 p.m. A prize will be given to out to the attendee on the top of the leader board. Have Fun! Wheel of Prizes There will be a prize wheel located at the Help Table for SEEC. Get chances to spin the wheel by collecting tickets from SEEC staff in various ways. 1. Join the SEEC group on Facebook where clues for tickets will be posted throughout the conference. 2. Look for interesting characters during lunch time and ask them for a ticket. (Example: Waldo or someone with a fun hat). 3. Find the SEEC Queen/Goddess and let her know one thing you have learned at SEEC. 4. Check under your seat at the keynote presentation. Space Center Houston offers an extraordinary opportunity to spend time with a NASA astronaut. This casual event gives you the opportunity to hear firsthand stories from a retired NASA astronaut while enjoying a delicious lunch prepared by our in-house catering staff. As a special memento of your visit, you will receive a personalized photograph from our guest astronaut. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis and must be purchased in advance. Astronaut for Feb. 10 is: Clay Anderson Reserve your ticket on our website spacecenter.org The Cherri Brinley Educator Award Space Center Houston would like to announce the annual Cherri Brinley Space Science Educator Award in memory of Cherri, a fourteen year SEEC veteran, who shared her passion for Space Science and inspired a multitude of educators and students around the nation. She attended SEEC and many other Space Center Houston Educational events for many years. All throughout her illness, she was able to always maintain the same positive outlook and spirit. Cherri was an outstanding educator who touched the lives of everyone that knew her. She had an infectious spirit that drove everyone around her to do their personal best and to strive for greatness. The Cherri Brinley award was created to celebrate other teachers who have the same drive and inherent spirit which always kept Cherri reaching for the Moon.
