4 Short History A of the I.B.M. By Past International President Jack White Len Vintus Gene Gordon Don Rogers Warner Dornfield W.W. Durbin The International Brotherhood of Magicians had very humble beginnings. It started as a letter writing exchange between three young men who shared a common interest, a love for the art of magic. M.J.G. Mc- Mullen of Canada, and Gordon Avery of Buffalo, New York began writing to each other about magic in A few months later a third young man joined in the correspondence campaign. His name was Ernest Schieldge. If those names sound unfamiliar to you it is because they all changed their names and became known in order as Len Vintus, Gene Gordon, and Don Rogers. That trio became the nucleus of the fledgling I.B.M. Len Vintus took the Presidency and he became I.B.M. Member No. 1; Gene Gordon was Publicity Director with I.B.M. No. 2. Don Rogers became Editor of The Linking Ring, the Brotherhood s official journal, and he became I.B.M. Member No. 3. Werner Dornfield, better known to magicians as Dorny, became involved and was given I.B.M. Membership No. 4, though he claimed to be the first official member since the others were all officers! Membership grew rapidly. There was 4 a clamoring for the formation of more local groups they called Rings. Gene Gordon established the first Ring in Rochester, New York. Additional Rings sprang up as members sought to meet and exchange ideas and interests in magic. The objectives of the I.B.M. are simple. To organize individuals interested in the practice and promotion of the Art of Magic; to facilitate the exchange of magical ideas; and to promote harmony among those interested in magic. The first fully elected President was the legendary W.W. Durbin, who won the election during the first I.B.M. Convention that was held in Durbin s backyard in Kenton, Ohio, in During that same Convention the International Brotherhood of Magicians was incorporated and a Constitution and By-Laws were created. Since that time, regular elections are held each year and a business meeting is called to report on the state of the organization. Now ninety years after its birth, the I.B.M. continues to forge ahead in bringing magicians together from around the world in the interest of advancing the ethics of magic, and to oppose exposures, to encourage literature, to promote professionalism in magic, and to promote humane treatment of live animals and birds used in our Art. Today, there are over 300 I.B.M Rings worldwide, boasting nearly 11,000 members. Those who have served the I.B.M. for twenty-five years are given the Order of Merlin award, and there are additional levels of recognition for thirty-five, fifty, and sixty years of continuous membership. Some of our members have served for sixty and seventy years and continue to remain active. Dr. John Booth held the record as our longest-standing member, having been a member for over eighty-one years! Through the years, those members whose dedication to magic has led them to the highest office have made contributions of time and talent that are immeasurable. All have felt honored and have continued to serve in various capacities. As we move forward, the I.B.M. faces new technology and changes in attitudes but while we may have our ups and downs, the object and goals remain the same. It is still the grandest magic organization in the world.

5 Greetings Vanni pulé, International President, Time has gone so fast. A year ago I started my presidency of this great organization and it seems like yesterday. I have travelled in many countries and magic has been the passport to friendship among people from different cultures and social strata. The I.B.M. is promoting this, and I hope it will continue to do so for a long time to come. I would like to thank you for your trust and for coming to this convention. Our annual event is the most important one in our magic calendar, and we have to do our best to keep it going. It is an opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones, to launch new talent and to keep legends alive in our memory. It gives us a chance to learn new material and to review the classics of magic. Above all, it is the time to have fun and explore new perspectives. For this, I would also like to heartily thank all those who have been involved directly and indirectly in the organization of this event and wish the best of prospects to the incoming International President, my friend of many years, John Pye. John Pye International President-Elect, Norfolk holds a special affinity to me, as it was the first I.B.M. Convention that I attended in the USA. This was in 1996, the year that I was President of The British Ring. I am very flattered this year to be taking on the job of International President and feel very humble in following my illustrious predecessors. A quotation that I frequently use is to have fun with magic, which after all is what we are in it for, and I am certain that is just what we shall be doing in Norfolk. Our congratulations must go to the organisers Mike Stratman and Bill Wells and their Committee who have had a difficult job due to the proximity of the FISM Convention in the U.K. Nonetheless they have come up trumps, and we are to enjoy several days of outstanding magic. As a previous organiser of The British Ring Convention, I know only too well the enormous amount of work that is involved, and it is very much appreciated. During the Convention my thoughts will be for members who through sickness or other adversity will be unable to be with us to enjoy the fun. Carol and I shall look forward to meeting you all. I.B.M. 7 LINKING The OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL BROTHERHOOD OF MAGICIANS Volume 92 Number 6 June 2012 DR. WILLIAM E. SPOONER Ring Our Convention s Guest of Honor Dr. William E. Spooner Past International President By C. Dennis Schick How does Dr. Bill Spooner top off a terrific year? How about being named the Special Guest of Honor at the 84th Annual Convention of the International Brotherhood of Magicians? So far 2012 has been a banner year for him. In January the I.B.M. Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve his nomination for the I.B.M. Medallion of Honor the highest award given by the world s largest magic organization. Also in 2012, he published the first two issues of his pioneering electronic publication, Journal of Magic Research. Then in the June 2012 issue of The Linking Ring, Bill was featured on the cover with an eight-page article that included sixteen photos. A banner year, indeed! Now he can add I.B.M. Convention Guest of Honor to his resumé. How did he arrive at this lofty position? It all began in 1953 when he was sixteen years old. He was shopping downtown in his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina, and noticed a magician performing. He introduced himself and subsequently gained a mentor and lifetime friend Lislie Shackerford (LiShak the Magician). Lislie introduced Bill to the I.B.M. and became one of his sponsors along with William Cash (DeCasho the Magician) of Durham. Next year he will be honored as a member of the Order of Merlin Excalibur in recognition of fifty years of continuous membership. Bill has attended most I.B.M. Conventions since his first in 1954 in Louisville, Kentucky. He acknowledges that as one ages, the reasons people attend conventions changes. Today I most enjoy seeing old friends and meeting new members, he said. Of course, serving as International President was one of the most memorable years for me. From the beginning he has enjoyed active involvement in the I.B.M. that includes Territorial Representative for North Carolina, Territorial Vice President, and for over thirty years, a member of the I.B.M. Board of Trustees. In 1980 he was elected to the Executive Committee. He served as International Vice President in , International President-Elect in , and International President in In 1993 he was made an Honorary Lifetime Member of the I.B.M. by the Board and by unanimous vote of the membership at the Annual Business Meeting. Throughout his years of association with the I.B.M. Bill Spooner has also distinguished himself as a member of the Convention Committee, Membership Committee, Internet Committee, Long-Range Planning Committee, the Management Team, President s Advisory Committee, Magic Collectors Advisory Committee, and Audit Committee. Since 1982 he has served as a trustee of the I.B.M. Endowment and Development Fund which has grown from a few thousand dollars to nearly $500,000. Yes, it has been a very good year for the I.B.M. and Dr. William Spooner and it is only July. We expect that he will find something more to do, and others will find more ways to recognize and honor one of our organization s all-time Most Valuable Players. 7 Top of page: Cover of The Linking Ring, June 2012, featuring Bill Spooner. 27 Convention Gives Back to Norfolk By C. Dennis Schick Wherever the International Brotherhood of Magicians holds its annual convention, hundreds who attend give back to the local community. This has been our tradition for many years. HOSPITAL SHOWS On Tuesday of this week, I.B.M. members performed two magic shows at a local hospital. This year the Hospital Show Director is Scott Hood (Ring 49, Ontario, Canada). Members of local Ring 103 and other volunteers put on the two shows. The hospital selected was the Naval Medical Centre at Portsmouth, which gives care to military families stationed at the Naval base. One of the unique treatment programs of this hospital is their Wounded Warrior Program for men and women returning from their service overseas. Magicians entertained patients and their families with a morning and an afternoon show. SHARE THE MAGIC: BUY A LAPEL PIN Since 2005, special stickers for name badges and in more recent years, collectible lapel pins have been sold to attendees to raise money for a local charity. The five-dollar donations (or more, on a voluntary basis) have totaled between $1,200 and $1,500 each year, resulting in over $14,000 given to local charities by the I.B.M. A check will be presented to this year s recipient, the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Virginia, during the Saturday evening show. Membership Chairman Terry Richison designed the semi-cloisonné pins this year, as he did for the Nashville and San Diego I.B.M. Conventions. Phil Messina is in charge of sales in Norfolk, and you can buy your collectible lapel pin at the registration desk or from one of the several people who will be selling them. PLEASE NOTE: When you see thirteen-year-old Alexa Richison at the registration desk or coming toward you just go ahead and get out your five- or ten- or twenty-dollar bill. She won t take no for an answer. The daughter of Terry and Sindie Richison, Alexa has been the Star Salesperson of the collectible pins ever since they were introduced. Buying and proudly wearing one of the lapel pins will show that you are helping to Share the Magic and continuing the tradition of generosity in the I.B.M. Thanks to all who participated.
