2 LED street lights first entered the marketplace nearly a decade ag. Since that time, millins f luminaires have been specified, installed, and mst imprtantly, experienced by the public. Sme f the lessns-learned frm thse early installatins, especially residential installatins, are that residents ften prefer lwer light levels, and warmer clr temperatures. Anther element f street lighting that citizens are becming increasingly aware f is glare. Glare cntrl is imprtant fr all utdr luminaire applicatins, hwever fr residential street light applicatins, design and luminaire selectin must be especially sensitive t glare and the needs f mtrists, pedestrians, cyclists, and residents. it shuld be used with the same prudence with which we use any ther technlgy. 3 Street Lighting Glare Accrding t the IESNA RP-8-14 Radway Lighting standard, radway lighting systems are under increasing scrutiny frm varius sectrs f the public. While the general public is nt usually aware f specific design requirements f radway lighting systems, bservatins f glare, light trespass, and sky-glw, are widely perceived and might be subject t criticism * Frm the IESNA standard, Discmfrt glare is glare prducing a sense f annyance r pain. It prduces a sensatin f discmfrt due t high cntrast f a nn-unifrm distributin in the field f view. 4 Field-Tuning f Street Lights CmfrtView Specificatins Even the mst thrugh street lighting designs cannt anticipate every field cnditin. Inevitably there will be light levels t high r t lw, r light trespassing int an area that requires less light r n light at all. Fr these situatins luminaires need t be specified as field-tunable.
