1 Newsletter November Meeting Address: Fallbrook Library, 124 So. Mission Road, Fallbrook, CA Mailing: PO Box 382, Fallbrook, CA President s Message As you are all aware of by now, we have had to cancel our Fall Open Judged Show due to a flood and extensive damage at the Fallbrook Art Center Gallery. My heart goes out to Mary Perhacs and FAC staff, as well as to our own membership who were looking forward to this annual show in its lovely venue. Also, please note that as a result of a Library scheduling error, our General Meeting date has been changed to Monday, November 19 th. (The Library will be closed on the 12 th.) At our October General Meeting, FAA Members were treated to a wonderful demonstration in Plein Air technique by guest artists Lisa Mozzini- McDill, and a sizeable group enrolled in Lisa s Plein Air workshop, held on Sunday October 14 th. Those of you who have been missing the overhead mirror at our monthly demos, will be happy to hear that thanks to Karen Langer-Baker s efforts, the overhead mirror will now reside in the Fallbrook Public Library, and will be available for future demonstrations. Our Webmaster, Dr. Patricia Hartman, is on the mend, and despite recent surgery, Patricia is already back to managing our website. Thank you Patricia, for all your past and present contributions to the FAA. On our website you will find FAA s current and past newsletters for your perusal, as well as links to regional art association newsletters and events. Be sure to check the FAA 2012/2013 Events Calendar to keep up to date on scheduled demos, workshops, shows and more. As you may already know, FAA will be holding a month long show in Studio 105 at the Brandon Gallery in March We are pleased to announce that our first annual Studio 105 theme show will be a juried and judged Plein Air show. Fallbrook has a long and significant association with Plein Air painting, and with the support and participation of our local Plein Air painters, this show could become an annual event. Our guest artist for the November demonstration will be Landscape artist Mike Gulewich. You will find more on Mike and the November demonstration in this newsletter. I want to remind you about our upcoming 50 th Anniversary Party, which will be held at the Fallbrook Public Library Community Room on December 10 th. Patricia Korzec is our party planner and hostess. If you wish to volunteer to help put on this historic event, please contact Patricia. And last, but not least, my thanks to Diane Jansen, who has volunteered to chair our Art Assist program. Art Assist will be undergoing changes this year, and Diane will be needing volunteers for this important community outreach program. Please call Diane to see how you can help. Best Regards, Annie For more details on the Fall Show cancellation, please see Page 4. 1
2 November 19, General Meeting (at the Fallbrook Library) Michael Gulewich will be the featured artist and oil painting demonstrator for the November 19th meeting. There will be an informal critique session at 5:30. Attendees may bring a painting that is in process in any media, and Gulewich will provide comments to assist the artist. Gulewich grew up and began painting in California. He later moved with his family to Oregon where he further developed his painting skills. Upon his return to California, he continued his artistic career working outdoors in a plein air style and in a natural landscape setting. A Mike Gulewich workshop is dependent upon the number of sign-ups, and a date, time and cost will be determined at the General Meeting.. Shown here and below are oil paintings by Michael Gulewich Mike has been a professional artist more than 25 years. His style is that of turn of the century Plein Air painters that captured their themes on location. Mike's paintings can be seen at the COAL GALLERY and most weekends at the Carlsbad Inn Art Show in Carlsbad. Workshop Participants Please bring an easel, drop cloth, waterproof tablecloth, plastic bag for your trash and use solvents without odor (no exceptions). For information, call or visit for the full class schedule and to register for the visiting artist workshops Fall Open Judged Show Cancellation Notice Most of you may already be aware that the Fallbrook Art Center gallery was flooded the week of October 15 th. I met with Mary Perhacs on October 17 th to survey the condition of the gallery. I am sorry to report that the effects of the flooding were extensive, and it will not be possible to restore the gallery in time to host our Fall Open Judged Show. Critical elements in the decision to cancel included the lack of an adequate alternate venue, and the preparation time and additional costs necessary to stage a show in a different venue at this late date. Many of you may not realize that this show was being financed by FAA funds only. Our SD County Enhancement Grant funds for 2012, was a reduced amount that was sufficient to fund only our 2012 Spring Show. Given the out of pocket nature of the Fall Show costs, it was decided that a hasty attempt to relocate the show to a lesser quality venue was not a wise expenditure of FAA monies. With regrets, we now look forward to a new FAA event, a month long Plein Air Show in March 2013, to be held in Studio 105 at the Brandon Gallery. The FAA will also be presenting several Village Square events, as well as our 2013 Spring Juried Show at FAC, and a Volunteer Appreciation show at Brandon s Studio 105 in August Thank you for your understanding. Anne Youngblood As another perk of membership in FAA, members can advertise their show at the artshow.com website. Wanted Volunteers and Easels Volunteer Artists willing to teach a class at Silvergate Suites. We would like to offer creative art classes 2x a month for our residents. We also need easels to use for our art activity. If you have any easels that you are willing to donate to our community we would be grateful. Silvergate Suites is located at 420 Elbrook Drive, Fallbrook. Contact Activity Director, Lynne Leonard Silvergate Retirement Residence.
