1 VOLUME MAY, Calendar of Events May 20 May 29 June 2 June 1-28 June 29 General Meeting: 1:30-3:30 PM Terry Mulrooney demo Pinecrest Community Center Spring Show intake at Gallery 10-11:30 AM - see details, page 4 Opening Reception 7-10 PM Show at Coconut Grove Art Festival Gallery Pick up from Gallery 10-11:30 AM FABULOUS ART SUPPLIES FOR SALE AT NOON BEFORE THE MAY 20 MEETING Mike Grecian will bring and sell his well priced art supplies from noon to 1:30 PM before our May 20th meeting. Mike contributes 3 bags of great art supplies for MWS to raffle, as well! Dont miss it. Welcome New Members! Lisa Emily Rafkin, Carmen Sureda Terry Arroyo Mulrooney to demo painting at MWS May 20 meeting Happy With Just Painting I have recently been working with acrylic rather than my usual watercolors. I love that I can cover up bad paintings and start portions over. In watercolors, I would plan every inch of my painting; first in my head and then in my sketches. This way I could avoid problems and paint the perfect picture. I didn t have time to paint as much as I wanted to, so I needed to have each painting be one that I could frame and put in a show. If all my planning failed, I would crop or throw it away and start all over. I have been known to paint the same painting twice trying to improve a part I didn t like only to find out that the first time was better when I was not trying so hard. Crazy! I recently read that Pablo Picasso created 20,000 artistic works. He produced so much volume that he also produced more masterpieces than any other artist in history. At the same time, I wonder if Picasso produced 20,000 masterpieces? Nope! He had a lot of average and not so average pieces. I am sure he had some he wanted to keep hidden. Others he covered up and started over again. With Picasso in mind, I decided that it was time to give myself the freedom to enjoy the process and whatever happens, happens. I want to paint for the pleasure of holding the brush in my hand and letting the paint flow. I want to paint to see what new images I can create. I want to paint to learn and explore new possibilities. I am more interested in the process than the final product. I paint for me: for my growth and my pleasure. And yes, they will not all be masterpieces. But if it is good enough for Picasso it is good enough for me. Happy Painting Marilyn Valiente, co-president MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS Pinecrest Community Center 5855 SW 111 Street, Pinecrest FL Second Sunday of each month, September through May. 1:30 3:30 P.M.
