Public is welcome. 1 From the Co-President Cityscape by Marilyn Valiente For the most part the lazy days of summer are a thing of the past and we turn our attention to the Fall season of art. In preparation for our next exhibit I like to highlight important factors that relate to one another and I believe contributes to outstanding and award winning painting. In working with abstracts, my awareness of the backbone of good paintings and the importance of designing the painting has been in the forefront of my thinking process. In my painting, City Escape, I choose one of my favorite compositions: the T shape. I deliberately put the weight of the painting on top to make it heavy and to create tension. The textured walls with its graffiti, the red representing the blood often shed by violence, and the dreariness of the grey surround the T Continues, page 2 Hillary Parker is a naturalist and international award winning botanical watercolor artist with paintings exhibited and sold worldwide. She enjoys a dual career of painting and teaching spanning 30 years, with requests for private and public watercolor commissions, juried international exhibitions, lectures, workshops, ongoing botanical art classes, private art instruction, corporate art events, and solo group shows with botanical gardens and art galleries

2 Co-Presidents Note Cont. from page 1 all adds to the tension and the busyness of the city. The blue of the sky is low and heavy. My hope was that the painting would create a subtle sense of discomfort. Although in an abstract paintings it may appeared to be more pronounced, it is just as important to design our painting even when working realistically. In teaching watercolor, I find that many students rely on the picture in front of them and try to duplicate it just as it is. They get lost in details that are not important. A photograph in front of them is only a guide. We need to digest it, interpret it and apply the rules of design (more about this in the next newsletter). Minimally, we need to map out the composition, color scheme, and center of interest. We need to eliminate what does not serve our design and add what is necessary. Only then we can begin to execute the painting. Painting this way can minimize mistakes and keep the painting fresh looking, cohesive and professional. Plan the backbone and the rest will flow. Marilyn Valiente Teachers Watercolor Workshop at Fairchild Tropical Garden The annual MWS s all-day public school Teachers Watercolor Workshop at Fairchild Tropical Garden will be held Saturday, September 8. The second part of the Student/Teacher Outreach Program is the annual student art show, Impressions in Watercolor. That opening is scheduled for November 15, at the Jewish Community Center. We are grateful to the volunteers who donate their time year after year, and as the program grows, we could sure use more help. Please consider joining us by contacting Donna Underwood, Karon Gorham or Jenny Lowhar and participating in the opening of the student watercolor show as a host or by donating food Teachers Watercolor Workshop Watercolor Classes Watercolor Classes are offered by MWS members in a relaxed and comfortable setting.
