I am looking forward to seeing how each of you approach this project. I know I am having fun with it. 1 ARTWORK OF THE MONTH Saturday Morning at Dunkin A pastel by JoEllen Del Coure Painting portraits caught my attention a few years ago, when I started participating in a weekly portrait group. I had never painted portraits before, but was intrigued by the challenge of painting live models, and learning to really see the details. Saturday Morning at Dunkin is a pastel painting of a man I spotted while having coffee with friends. I loved the texture of his beard and the reflections in his glasses. Perhaps he will become the first in a series of Dunkin characters. As the child of an artist, I was lucky to grow up surrounded by artwork and lots of opportunities to explore my creativity. After earning a BFA degree in metalsmithing and ceramics, I had a metalsmithing studio, but continued to dabble in other areas as well. A few years before I retired, my mother invited me to go on a watercolor painting trip to Yellowstone National Park, and that is when I really fell in love with painting. It was my mother s last painting trip before she passed away, and I felt like she was passing the painting torch on to me. That is perhaps the best gift I have ever been given. JoEllen Our Veteran artists will be having lunch with Mayor Giles on November 10th at Red Mountain Multi- Generational Center, and presenting him with a group work of art. We are very proud of all our artists for their fine work and their generosity of time. Thank you for all you do. 2 REMEMBER TO BRING - Bring in photos of events you have participated in for the history books. MAL MEMBERSHIP SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are available to MAL members for attending a special workshop or class. You can apply for up to a $250 scholarship to help with the tuitions. Due dates to apply for 2016 are: Feb 28, May 31, Aug 31, Nov 30. See application at: NEWS FROM AAA The "Art in Partnership II" show will be opening Sat., Oct.1 and will run through Oct.27 at the Holland Gallery of Fine Art located at N. 60th St, Bldg. B, Scottsdale. Artist's Reception will be held Oct. 8, 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Always a great show with AAA and the Holland Gallery! Hope you will visit the gallery and support your fellow artists. The 10 th Annual Artists Studio Tour sponsored by Artists of the Superstitions will take place the weekend of November 5-6. Vincent Van Gogh FELLOWSHIP SQUARE NEWS - Residents at Fellowship Square enjoy our artwork and ask us questions when we are changing the art. This last change was special as they got to meet some of the artists, have coffee and cookies and just talk about art. We may have another meet-andgreet there in the spring. Thank you Fellowship Square for allowing us to share our art with your residents and thanks to the artists and residents who participated. Mark your calendar for November 12, 9-2. Paint out and lunch. Bring your paints, easels and cameras! Pack a lunch and something to share. We are able to paint in the preserve. Look for interesting flowers and wildlife. If you want to just photograph them, that's fine. We will have the large Ramada for all to sit together for lunch. Bring your chairs also. Lunch will be from Lets critic some of the work. Think of ideas for an Arizona Wildlife and Sonorian Desert Show for Boyce Thompson in the future. No date as yet. Since this (Boyce) is a small gallery, think under 16 x 20 or smaller! We will be able to handle many works if we keep them small. They will need to be juried by the director who is strict about subject. No portraits expect of AZ wildlife. He really likes our native wildlife and vegetation. Start painting and drawing and mixing up your mediums! Photos too! Kathy McClure sold a framed print of "Temple of the Condor" on Fine Art America to a buyer in Florida. Judy Bottler sold three canvas prints at the art show in Pine. Two Pieces of artwork were sold at the Gammage Show. Susie Miller sold a piece Sweet Daisies and Linda Allen sold her painting titled Nasturtiums. Suzanne Leslie had a piece accepted in the AZ State Fair as did some of the Veterans. RIPARIAN PRESERVE! LET'S PAINT!
