2 Grade Level: 1-12 Introduction Encourage students to think about their lesson long after class has finished. Have them decorate a tin using the theme of the lesson topic a person, place or event then have them gather small items that relate to the topic to place in their time capsule. This lesson teaches students to look for art in everyday life, and encourages them to connect the past with the present in a tangible form. They can then return to the classroom and share their discoveries. Educational Objectives This lesson provides opportunities for students to: Learn new visual art vocabulary and use it in the course of the project Generate multiple designs with the use of color and collage techniques Use multiple instructions to produce a hands-on project Understand and apply media, techniques and processes Use visual arts in relation to various courses of study Reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their own work and the work of others Make connections between visual arts and other disciplines Introduce elements of the lesson topic and translate it into visual form Apply the details of the lesson topic to everyday life Project Closure Language Arts connection and project closure Write and illustrate a brief description of this project; include detailed descriptions of the materials used and what happened during this project. 3 Ceramic Arts Project Instructions Time Capsule Time Capsule Box Materials List Duncan Oh Four Bisque: Slanted Diamond Box Envision Glazes: IN 1026 Very Black IN 1201 Neon Yellow IN 1202 Neon Blue IN 1204 Neon Orange IN 1206 Neon Red IN 1653 Downright White Discovery Brushes: BR 521 China Script BR 585 No. 6 Sabelina BR 575 No. 3 Fan Glaze Miscellaneous Materials: Star heart pattern (or other pattern pertaining to the lesson plan) Pencil Clay carbon paper Paper towels Sponge Foil Stilt stone Instructions: For best results, please read all instructions before beginning project. Refer to photo for color and design placement. 1. Lightly wipe ware with a damp sponge to remove any bisque dust. 2. Place clay carbon paper over top of box and place pattern on top of clay carbon paper. Use pencil to trace over pattern, transferring design onto box top. 3. Pour a puddle of each color onto foil. 4. Use the No. 6 Round to paint one half of each star point Neon Yellow and the other half Neon Red and Neon Orange. Let dry, then add two additional coats of Neon Yellow to the Neon Yellow sections, letting dry between coats. 5. Use the No. 6 Round to brush three coats of Neon Blue onto the rest of the lid, including the underside. Let dry between coats. 6. Use the No. 1 Liner to outline the outside of star and different colored sections with Very Black. Add lines traveling through the Neon Red/Neon Orange section. Refer to photo. Let dry. 7. Use the Fan Glaze brush to paint three coats of Neon Orange onto the bottom portion of box, letting dry between coats. 8. Dip the end of the Fan Glaze brush handle into Neon Yellow to make large dots randomly around the bottom of the box. Use the end of the No. 1 Liner to make small Downright White dots on the box lid and throughout the Yellow dots on the bottom of the box. Let dry. 9. Stilt and fire to witness cone Use a stilt stone to remove stilt marks.

5 Craft Project Instructions Time Capsule Tin Materials List Crafty Chica Mojito Papers Crafty Chica Loteria Game Aleene s Original Tacky Glue Tulip 3D Fashion Paint Miscellaneous Materials: Tin with lid desired size Images of topic studied Scissors Ribbon assorted sizes and colors Sand paper Paintbrush Foil Instructions: For best results, please read all instructions before beginning project. Refer to photo for color and design placement. 1. Use sand paper to lightly sand the inside, outside and lid of tin. 2. Select one or more images from the Crafty Chica Loteria Game deck of cards that represent the topic studied, or choose image or photo from desired medium. 3. Cut out desired images from the Crafty Chica Mojito Papers to fit around sides, inside and lid of tin. Pour a puddle of Aleene s Original Tacky Glue onto a piece of foil, then use paintbrush to brush onto the backs of papers. Press onto tin and let dry. 4. Glue Loteria cards/images from the topic studied onto top of lid and inside of tin if desired. Let dry. 5. Glue ribbon around tin or where desired using Aleene s Original Tacky Glue. Let dry. 6. Add accents around images and Mojito Paper designs with Tulip 3D Fashion Paint. Let dry.
