2 MATERIALS LIST CONE 5-6 CLAY DUNCAN CONCEPTS UNDERGLAZES CN 302 BRIGHT CARIBBEAN DUNCAN RENAISSANCE GLAZES RG 726 BRONZED LILAC BRUSHES & TOOLS BR 593 ECONOMY GLAZE BRUSH TL 401 CLEANUP TOOL MISCELLANEOUS SUPPLIES SLAB ROLLER OR ROLLING PIN PLASTER MOLDS DOUBLE-ENDED RUBBER TOOL RUBBER RIB STAMP DESIGNS OF CHOICE HOLE MAKER CARDBOARD TEMPLATES PENCIL STAMP FOR BEST RESULTS, PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE BEGINNING PROJECT. REFER TO PHOTO FOR COLOR AND DESIGN PLACEMENT. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Roll clay for candle holder pieces with a rolling pin or on slab roller. 2. Smooth both sides with rubber rib TIPS FOR success: APPLIQUED PIECES SHOULD BE PRESSED FIRMLY WHEN ATTACHING TO ADHERE WITHOUT AIR BUBBLES TAKING CARE TO NOT SMEAR THE DETAIL WHEN CUTTING THE HANGER HOLE, ANGLE THE TOOL POINTED UPWARD TO ENSURE THAT THE CANDLE HOLDER WILL NOT FALL OFF THE WALL IF IT IS TO BE HUNG. CHECK THAT CANDLE HOLDER STANDS STRAIGHT WHEN YOU FINISH. VOCABULARY APPLIQUÉ: CLAY: SLIP: SCORE: COILING: RIB: TO APPLY PIECES OF CLAY ONTO ANOTHER CLAY SURFACE A FIRM, FINE-GRAINED MIXTURE OF MINERALS FROM THE EARTH THAT IS FLEXIBLE WHEN WET AND HARD WHEN DRY. CLAY AND WATER/VINEGAR MIXED TOGETHER AND USED AS A GLUE WHEN JOINING TOGETHER TWO PIECES OF CLAY TO CUT SLIGHTLY INTO THE CLAY IN A CRISSCROSS PATTERN WITH A FORK OR OTHER SHARP OBJECT. USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH SLIP TO JOIN TOGETHER TWO PIECES OF CLAY A HAND METHOD OF FORMING POTTERY BY BUILDING UP THE WALLS WITH ROPE-LIKE ROLLS OF CLAY AND THEN SMOOTHING OVER THE JOINTS A TOOL OF WOOD, BONE, RUBBER OR METAL THAT IS USED TO MOLD AND SMOOTH CLAY 3. Use Cleanup Tool to cut pieces exact size from cardboard templates. Stiffen clay. 4. Texture back of house-shaped clay with stamp.

3 5. Mark house-shaped piece of clay with pencil as shown using narrow rectangular cardboard template. 9. Attach appliquéd clay piece inside of marked lines on the houseshaped piece of clay. 10. Smooth edges of appliquéd piece using double-ended rubber tool. 6. To create applique designs, press clay into plaster mold. Use rubber rib to smooth clay flat into the mold. Release clay from mold by using a small amount of clay as a handle. 11. Cut off side strips. Stamp narrow rectangular side strips of clay with desired stamp design. 12. Repeat appliqué process to fill marked area. 7. Trim applique using Cleanup Tool 8. Score and add slip to appliquéd clay piece. 13. Attach side decorative strips. Trim to fit exactly if necessary. 14. Slip and score all further attachments with a small coil of clay blended into where the two pieces come together being careful not to smooth out the texture/design. Use double-ended rubber tool to blend clay together. 15. Smooth outer edge of house shaped piece of clay together with side decorative strip.

4 16. Bend lower shelf rectangular piece. Attach bent lower shelf piece to large back piece. 17. Place assembled parts on base. Mark base with a pencil. Remove assembled parts and trim the base to fit with Cleanup Tool. Attach the assembled parts to the base. 20. Score and use slip to attach small decorative triangle. 18. Smooth a small coil of clay into the inside surface where the base and curved piece join together. 21. Add more appliqués as desired. 22. Bisque fire to cone Using hole maker, cut out hanger hole all the way through the large back piece and large triangle. 23. Glaze with one coat Bright Caribbean. Let dry.
