Dress appropriately or use a smock Clean up after yourself You will receive a daily grade on working days

3 Shape vs Form Shape Form 2D A contained space bound by one or more elements of art 3D

4 Paper Mache Papier-mâché French for chewed paper Involves dipping thin paper into a glue / starch solution & sticking it to a surface Adds strength to form

5 Decorative Letters Letters that are created to be visually pleasing Shows the artist s personal style Can be representative or have a special meaning person, place, thing, event, idea, etc.

6 Illuminated Manuscripts Decorative handwritten texts from 12 th century Europe Featured intricate artistic detail on important letters Usually only religious or important books were made / copied

7 Choose a Letter Pick a letter any letter Choose one that is significant in some way UPPERCASE or lowercase? Make is thick / bold / blocky Decide on a style Look at reference fonts

8 Sketches Use graph paper to draw your letter from multiple angles FRONT Fold the paper into quarters Write FRONT at the top of the paper LEFT BACK RIGHT Flip the paper over & label each of the 4 sections LEFT RIGHT TOP FRONT TOP BOTTOM BOTTOM

10 X-Acto Knife Safety & Usage DON T CUT ANYONE!!! YOU WILL LOSE YOUR PRIVLEDGE TO USE IT! You must sign it out & in According to your seat # Blade down in tube with cap Use a cutting board over the tables or good luck using scissors Do not saw or stab only slice No open toe shoes

11 Cut Out Letter Letter must be at least 12in wide Draw the letter on the cardboard Use an X-Acto knife / scissors to cut it out Trace letter on 2 nd piece of cardboard Cut out 2 nd letter for back

12 Cut Out Sides Letter must be at least 3in thick Cut length based on the letter s perimeter Measure each side & cut to fit

13 Assemble Letters Attach sides to back of letter using glue &/or tape Attach reinforcement walls inside letter if necessary Attach front of letter to sides

14 Paper Mache Set Up & Clean Up Set Up The class will need lots newspaper strips (1in +/-) Everyone will need to put down newspaper to cover tables Each table will need a container with paper mache solution Clean Up Project in drying area Newspaper strips in box Extra paper mache solution is saved Clean tables

15 Paper Mache Dip newspaper strips in glue / starch solution Wrap strips around letter Cover completely in layers

16 Paint Set Up & Clean Up Set Up Protect the table with newspaper Pour only the amount & colors you need for the day Don t be wasteful! Save extra poured paints with lid Grab brushes & water Clean Up Place art on drying rack / area Table Throw away newspaper Wipe off paint Palette No paint (not even a little bit) Clean w/ sponge & water & place in rack to dry Brushes Swirl under water until there s no paint & the water runs clear Dry with smooth bristles pointing up Sink & Floors Make sure these areas are paint free & wipe up any spills

17 Paint Letters Use white paint (gesso) to prime the surface before adding color Paint letter in colors & designs you like You may need 2 coats

18 Decorate - Elements of Art Use the elements of art to decorate your letter Space Shape Form Line Color Texture Value

19 Decorate Letter Decorate in your style! You may use any materials as long as you clean it up!

20 Artist s Statement Use full sentences to write a paragraph citing visual evidence on your 3D decorative letter. Remember to use your art vocabulary, & be specific.
