The charity committee met last month and decided how best to utilize all that fabric. The first thing we needed to do was sort it so we knew what was in all those bins. Kay and Ann hauled most of it to Peggy s garage. There was too much for all of it to fit in Kay s van. Committee members, Shirley, Barb, Lynn, Peggy, Linda, Carol, Linda, Kay, Donna and Ann spent the morning opening boxes and bins and sorting fabrics into manageable piles. The committee then decided to make up fabric bundles. There were two very large bins stacked with 3 yards or longer pieces, just great for quilt backs. To make a Committee Organizes Charity Projects bundle we started with the back and added coordinating fabric pieces. The intent was to bundle enough yardage to make a quilt top with a complimentary back. No patterns have been included with these bundles. The quilter can select their own pattern which best utilizes the fabrics. Due to the abundance of holiday fabric, we decided on a second project; making Christmas stocking kits. The stockings could be filled at the Christmas party; then donated. The pattern to make the Christmas stocking is included in this newsletter. The fabric has been cut and made into individual kits. The charity committee is asking guild members to help stitch Join us online at quilts and stockings. Rather than organizing a day of charity sewing, we would like guild members to select fabric bundles and/ or stocking kits, then sew at your leisure. The fabric bundles and stocking kits will be brought to the October meeting for your selection. Quilt batting is available for the charity quilts. Contact Kay Rusch or Peggy Valitchka to place an order for the correct size batting for your quilt. Elsewhere in this newsletter is a guideline for the quilt sizes to be made from the fabric bundles. 2 Minutes of the September 14 th, 2017 Meeting September meeting was called to order by new president Lindy Backus at 6:45 pm. Lindy led the guild in Pledge of Allegiance. Guests at the meeting were introduced and a new member welcomed Linda Thompson. A big Thank You was given by Lindy to all past officers and board members. Small tokens of appreciation were given to Janet Pitroski, former president, Mary Hutchison, former secretary and former board members Ann Hall, Sue DuPont and Peggy Valitchka Vice President, Julie Puestow, then introduced our program speaker, Sheryl Schwockert from the Sewing Basket in Plymouth. She gave a very inspirational program on using panels in many different ways to make fast easy quilts. Show and Tell: Many members shared quilted items they have worked on and completed recently. Social with Snack Minutes: Approved from June meeting as written in the newsletter. Motion made by Connie Kalupy and seconded by Carol DeGroot. Motion passed by group. Treasurer s Report: Approved with motion made by Carol DeGroot and seconded by Bonnie Loeh. Motion passed by group. OLD BUSINESS Rosalie Miller reported on August picnic with good attendance, wonderful pot luck meal, and fun games. Our project of making pillow cases and donating them for the foster care program had a tremendous response from the membership. Two vehicles were loaded with the cases and taken to the foster care program site. They were very appreciative and loved the bright colors in the fabrics. Over two dozen pillows were also obtained at a discounted price through the generosity of Kohl's and donated to the program with funds from our charity booth at the 2017 quilt show. Membership Booklet: Presented by Sue Druschke. Booklets were handed out to members present. A few corrections were made. Secret Pal: Correction made that Mary Kempf was chairman of the committee not Carol DeGroot as listed. Meeting Hostesses: We are in need of additional hostesses for each monthly meeting. Please let Lindy know if you are willing to help out. Charity Committee: Nancy Bauhs name was accidentally omitted. NEW BUSINESS Camp Quilt: scheduled for Sept. 29, 30,and Oct 1 starting at 9am on Friday. Explanation of camp meals, activities and sleeping options given for all newer members by Kay Olker. 27 are currently signed up with a maximum of 30 people allowed. One Block Wonder Workshop: Scheduled for 10/21/17 given by Mary Ellen Beebe. A few openings are still available. Julie Puestow reported on the Silver Lake College exhibit with info from director Erin LaVonti. She will need quilts that are 3 X3 maximum, with possible theme of compassion. We would like to know minimum number of quilts to see if we have enough members to do this. The display would be up from 4/14/18 5/13/18 at Silver Lake College. New Budget: Approved with motion by Sue Druschke and seconded by Julie Puestow. Motion carried. Raffle Quilt: Lindy encouraged a group to form to make a raffle quilt for the 2019 quilt show. Please notify Lindy if interested. Kohl's Cares: Is a program sponsored by Kohl's, to encourage involvement of their employees in the community. If we as a non profit guild, fill out a form, hold an event, where at least 5 of Kohl's employees help out, for at least 3 hours, Kohl's will donate to the organization $ Motion was made by Kaye Olker, and seconded by Donna Theiss. 3 Block of the Month The Block-of-the-Month Committee decided on a different approach to the Block-of-the-Month this year. Instead of dividing into 7-8 steps for the quilt and completing one each month, with a big quilt finished at the end of the year, we have chosen 4 quilts that are simpler in design and construction. We have divided each of these quilts into 3 steps, so that at the end of 3 months, you will have a finished quilt top. You will have the opportunity to complete 4 quilts during the year. You can do one of them, 2 of them, 3 of them, or the entire 4! Your choice. We hope you stick with us for the entire year, though. We would like you to choose fabrics for each quilt from your stash, rather than purchase the fabrics (don t worry! If you don t have a stash, it is ok to purchase them!) You will probably have to buy background and binding, but you might find that in your stash as well! All of the quilts lend themselves well to scraps, but scraps are NOT necessary! One of the quilts would use a jelly roll if you have one otherwise, just cut your strips. Two of them use charms, but again, you can cut them. With that introduction, let s get started! QUILT NUMBER ONE! DREAM ON! Finished size: 58 x 75 (If you want to make it larger, just get more fabric) Fabrics: 37 2 ½ strips (could be all the same fabric, multiple fabrics, or 5-7). Strips should contrast with background. Background 2 yds. Binding - 5/8 yd. Backing 3 ½ yds. Step 1: Cut: From the various 2 ½ print strips, cut a total of # (28) 10 x 2 ½ (70) 8 x 2 ½ (70) 6 x 2 ½ (35) 4 x 2 ½ From the background fabric cut 19 2 ½ strips. Sub-cut into: # (35) 6 ½ x 2 ½ (70) 4 ½ x 2 ½ (70) 2 ½ x 2 ½ Sew the following 8 print to 2 ½ Background, short sides are sewn together. 6 print with 4 ½ background, short sides are sewn together. 4 print with 6 ½ background, short sides are sewn together. 4 One Block Wonder Workshop A one day workshop to learn the technique for "One Block Wonder." These quilts are truly one of a kind and can be such original works of art, without much work! If you have always thought you could never create an original art quilt, but wished it were so, then this class is for you!!! A 24" repeat will require 4 yds. plus an extra yard for border. All fabrics require a minimum of 6 repeats plus an extra yard. Choose a large print fabric with about 5 colors. You might want a coordinating border fabric, but you can wait to decide that. Bring to the workshop Your fabric Sewing machine Thread to match fabric. Flannel backed table cloth for design wall and to take home with you. Cutting mat Rotary cutter 60 degree ruler or a 24" ruler with a 60 degree line on it. You will also need a 24" long ruler to cut your strips with They could be the same ruler, if it has the 60 degree line. Straight pins Basic sewing supplies. 5 Size Guidelines For Charity Quilts Baby Quilts# 00 x00 Wheelchair Lap# 47 x47 Lap Quilt# 40 x60 Quilt of Valor (national organization)# 57 x72 Quilts for Veterans (donated locally)# any of the other sizes listed Napping Quilt# 56 x80 Twin Size# 63 x87 A twin size is the largest quilt to be sewn for charity. Hanging Loop Here. X 2 Fat Quarter Magic Stocking Yardage Requirements: 1 Fat Quarter Outside of stocking # 1 Fat Quarter Lining # 1 Fat Eighth (9x22) Cuff and hanging loop 1. Trace or cut out the stocking pattern, joining the top and bottom along the dotted line. 2. Stack the two fat quarters on top of one another both with RIGHT SIDES FACING DOWN. Fold stacked fat quarters in half to 11 x 18. Cut stocking from this folded stack. Result: 2 matching pieces of stocking outer fabric and 2 matching pieces of lining fabric. 3. Stack 2 matching pieces of outer stocking fabric RIGHT SIDES TO- GETHER (RST). 4. On top of the outer stocking layer, stack 2 pieces of lining fabric (RST). 5. Pin all four layers together as they lay. Sew around the stocking sides and foot, leaving the top edge open. 6. Now for the MAGIC part. Reach in between the two lining layers and pull the stocking right side out. Then reach in between the two outer stocking fabric layers and pull the right side out. You now should have a beautiful stocking, lined with the seams neatly enclosed and raw edges on top.! Cut pattern along this line.

6 (Place stocking top here.) 7. From the fat eighth, cut the cuff, 8 x 13½. To create the cuff, sew short (8 ) ends together with the right sides facing each other to form a tube. Stitch. Press seams open. Fold cuff in half WRONG SIDES TOGETHER. 8. Make the hanging loop from stocking fabric or cuff fabric. Cut a strip 1½ x 9. Press ¼ hem toward the middle along each long side. Fold the strip in half. Press. Stitch along the side with the hems. 9. Pin the hanging loop at the top inside the stocking near the back seam allowance with all raw edges together. 10. Pin the raw edges of cuff to INSIDE of stocking top. Sew around the top edge. 11. Flip the cuff from the inside to the outside and admire your Magic Stocking.
