1 WEST SUBURBAN QUILTER S GUILD WSQG Newsletter Volume 39, Issue 3 November 2016 Meetings Meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of the month, with the exception of a couple Thursday meetings. See the schedule in this newsletter. Meetings begin at 7:00 Social time begins at 6:30 Brookfield Lutheran Church W. Burleigh Brookfield, WI Website Follow us on the website at Submit items to Ann Cook at webgeekdesigns@gmail.com Facebook Please check the WSQG Facebook page at WSQG.WI Please Like the page to follow it. This is a quick and easy way to get information to members. Newsletter The newsletter is put together by Lynette Fennig. All items should be submitted by the 25th of the month to lynfennig@gmail.com The newsletter will be published on the WSQG.net website. An , with a link to the website, will be sent to membership when the newsletter has been published. From the President - MaryJo As the leaves change color and the nights get colder, I find myself wanting to snuggle up beneath a nice warm quilt. Seeing the antique quilts from the museum gave me a few ideas to incorporate into projects at home. I am often amazed at the age of some quilts. Do you think any of your quilts might be loved and cherished by someone 75 years from now? It can happen, especially since many of the items we make today are intended for hanging, and we know so much more about how to care for and preserve today's treasures. I believe that our family members are more likely to take good care of the quilt if they know it was created for a special event, for another family member, and created by a family member. Be sure to label and document your work so future generations are encouraged to preserve these treasures. As the weather changes, I also start thinking of the UFO's that are still hanging around the sewing studio, and the upcoming list of Christmas gifts that need to be stitched. One way to get a few items off the list is to do some early holiday shopping during our November auction. Funds collected during the auction help us acquire high quality speakers and supplement informative and creative workshops. I hope you have been working on contributions for both the live auction and the small table. Items will be placed on a 'grab & go' table are for immediate sale, and larger items will be auctioned off. Suggested items: wall hangings, table toppers, handbags, kitchen accessories, handmade toys, patterns, books, beading or jewelry, recipe kits or even a bottle of wine. Guests don't have to be quilters, and who doesn't enjoy shopping? Finally, I would like to thank all of you who have volunteered to help out the night of the auction. Your participation will make it a success. Don't forget, everyone who brings a guest is eligible for door prizes. You and your guest must both be present to win. Bring a friend or two and have some fun! MaryJo West Suburban Quilter s Guild 1

2 Mary Jo s 2017 President s Challenge Participants are invited to take any traditional quilt block and give it a fresh new look. If you wish to use a pre-existing pattern, you are welcome to do so. You may use any block, make any change, use it any size and in any project. Whether you prefer modern or art quilting, appliqué, embroidery, whole cloth or pieced, choose a traditional quilt block and share your updated, non-traditional item during our May banquet. We will vote on the items and award ribbons in the following categories: Most Artistic Most Modern Most Unrecognizable Block People's Choice overall President's Choice **************** Charity Committee and Empty Bowls From Terry Mika: Thanks again ladies for your participation in the Empty Bowls 2016 Event. I think that WSQG was a big hit! We raised over $1600 for the Empty Bowls. There were over 2,000 attendees and we helped them reach a new record for MEB - over $66,000 raised!! Check out the photo of the volunteers who came to the event: Karen Hendrickson, Cindy Vick, Patty Martin, Judy Valentino, and Martha Korinko. I know they had as much fun as I had. Ask them about the event. I'm hoping everyone will be up for participating again in 2017! Before: After: West Suburban Quilter s Guild 2

From Betty Lerner: Community Requests Hello! My name is Nicole Armstrong I am the Health and Wellness Director at Brookdale Brookfield Memory Care community. We are a small community with 16 residents who all have Alzheimer's and or dementia. One of our goals at Brookdale is to continue enriching the lives of the residents we serve in our community and continuing to provide positive experiences for them and wonderful memories to leave with the families. Quilting is a beautiful art and many of our women have crocheted, knitted and or quilted in their younger days. I was hoping to partner with you and a few of your talented members and cooridinate an event in our community with you. We would love it if you were able to bring for an afternoon some quilts to display in our community. We would provide beverages and snacks for residents and their families as they viewed your quilts. I would open the event up to the Assisted living community across the street and encourage any interested ladies across the street to come and pay us visit. Perhaps if one of you were able we could have small presentation on quilting and the history etc that we would surely be enjoyable for our guests. Please let me know if you would be interested in partnering with us for an enjoyable afternoon or evening for our communities residents. 6 NOVEMBER 9 AUCTION Our November meeting promises to be a fun time with our auction. I always get asked what to bring, so here is a list of possible suggestions to help you decide; remember the holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming, so anything that you think would be a nice gift for someone that is knitted, sewed, jewelry, a basket of coffees or chocolates, etc. Holiday and winter decorations always cheer up the winter days. Remember those you might need a hostess gift for or an upcoming birthday gift. If you would enjoy having or receiving an item, so would someone else. Don't forget those children in your lives or that special neighbor. Buy-It-Now items can be handcrafted items that are smaller (under $10) in value, or gently used quilting equipment, patterns, fabric that you can't remember why you bought, books, bags of yarn, etc. All Buy-It-Now items should be marked with a price either by taping or pinning on the item. Prices should be in 25 cent increments. REMEMBER, this is not a general garage sale. Only handcraft items or baked items will be sold here. At this meeting it is great to bring a friend with you along with their checkbook, please. If you bring a guest and you and the guest are still there at the end of the auction, the member will be eligible for a door prize. These will be the only door prizes for the night. Please remember to bring your checkbook and lots of small bills to pay for your purchased items. There will be no way of charging items or cashing large bills, over $20's. There will NOT be show and tell in November to save time for the auction and to get the meeting finished on time. Special auction donations should have a note written and given to me prior to the auction so I can use the info for bidding. Thank you in advance to the committee for volunteering to help. You will receive a phone call several days prior to the auction with instructions for your job. Please remember, the auction is only as good as you make it. All your donations are greatly appreciated and your bidding and buying makes for a fun night and one less item you need to make for a gift. Any questions, Call your auctioneer, Gloria, at or WSQG Program Schedule Wednesday Nov. 9, Guild Auction, make items to donate and come to bid on your Holiday presents! We would like to have both made items and donated items from your quilting room that you are willing to part with for a good cause. Thursday Dec. 15, School House, focus on Techniques. $50 stipend given to eat of the 4 presenters. Interested in presenting/teaching a technique? See Judy Valentino, Terry Mika or Linda Valiga. Wednesday Jan. 11, Lisa Binkley - Adding sparkle and texture to your quilts. Whether you re interested in trying bead embellishment for the first time or you ve done some embellishment but are looking for additional inspiration, this lecture is for you. You ll learn step-by-step instructions for embellishing your quilts and garments with beads. Workshop - Lisa Binkley (January Date to be determined) - Half day (up to 16 students) Wednesday Feb. 8, Wendy Rieves - Troubleshooting and Maintenance of your machine. Everything goes smoother when you have a well-maintained machine. Think of it as a spring cleaning for your machine. Workshop (Date to be determined) - Wendy Rieves - New York Beauty. 6 person minimum. Thursday Mar. 9, Cheryl Schenck will present how to do McTavishing, a popular filler technique for machine quilting your quilts. She will be using a camera and overhead so that you will be able to see her actually do the technique. Wednesday April. 19, Pam See presents Modern Traditionalism vs. Modern Quilting. What is the difference? What makes a quilt modern? Watch and listen as Pam takes you on her journey to find modern quilting and what it means to her. Along the way, she will demonstrate interesting and time saving tools and techniques that make quilting exciting and fun. Wednesday May 10, Potluck and Workshop Show and Tell. 7 ! November 1, 2016 Our meeting for October was called to order by MaryJo. The first order of business was show and tell. There were items shown by 13 members of our guild. Cindy Vick shared a story about an elderly neighbor who gave her several antique quilts because he wanted them to go to a good home. After this wonderful story, we had our program for the evening. The program was presented by Jamie Henry who is one of the curators at the Wisconsin Museum oof Quilts and Fiber Arts in Cedarburg, WI. He talked about the museum and it s current show QUILT NIHON from Japan. He had a slide show and several antique quilts to show. Next we got an update on the Empty Bowels volunteer project. Because, of the guilds hard work, the project raised approximately $ All the committee chairs were asked for reports with anything new to report. At the November meeting, we will have our annual auction. There will be a buy it now table with items for $10.00 and under. There will be a traditional auction and members are asked to bring items to be sold. Also bring $$$$ so ;you can bid on items. There will be door prizes given for members who bring guests. Meeting adjourned. Respectfully submitted by Chris Day - Secretary West Suburban Quilter s Guild 7
