Her business is located in the Fondren Area. Please come and listen to her. Hello quilters! Quilting bees and the traditions of quilting are on my mind this afternoon as I head home from a Sit-N-Sew with another guild. Words often associated with quilting are comfort, and warmth and fellowship, and I experienced each of these and more today. As most of you know, I've been going through a rough patch with my husband's health issues and my stress level is through the roof. I took the time to go to the modern-day "quilting bee" to give myself a break. It was wonderful to be able to sit and just mindlessly piece fabric for charity quilts and enjoy the laughter and coffee and friendship of others who were doing the same. I was surprised at how much it took me out of myself and my own worries to just sit and visit with a group of women I truly like and admire, and get my hands on fabrics for the first time in over a week. It's amazing how soothing just running the fabric through the machine can be and the reassuring sound of my old Singer "thrashing machine." That I actually wound up with several completed lap quilt tops was just gravy compared to the calmness I felt as I left. I can't thank you all enough for letting me crash your party. It was brought home to me more than ever that our traditions and history are as important to our quilting as the beautiful fabrics and patterns we use, and gives me renewed enthusiasm for passing along not only the skills involved, but the unseen benefits of quilting! 2 Minutes of April 26, 2010 Rhonda Blasingame called our meeting to order. Announcements Dianne Jordan announced plans to open a quilt store in her home in Vicksburg. She sent around a questionnaire for members to fill out. She will collect them at the end of the meeting. Stitch N Frame has now moved to its new location in Bovina MS. Rhonda announced that new name tags and membership cards are now available to the membership. Joanne Humphries announced if anyone was interested in making a T shirt quilt out of baseball uniforms for a mother. She has the phone number if anyone is interested. Dorinda Evans will be teaching a Celtic class at the MS. Craft Center. The fee is $50. Please contact her for more information. Charity Projects Photos taken by Gwen Harris Diantha Stafford is encouraging the membership to participate in the Quilts of Valor project. She has 5 quilts to send, and is challenging the group to meet her commitment, so we can ship 10 quilts from Jackson Quilters. The size of the quilt needs to be 50 x 60 inches. The organization prefers that we use patriotic prints, but will accept other fabrics. Lynn Flanders has made 2 and Joann Humphries has one quilt to ship. Diane Jordan and Lynn Massey have volunteered to machine quilt them. Quilt made by Diantha Stafford Marcella Comans is showing a quilt which she has completed for Rita Warnock s Charity project. Our group should be very pleased that we have created 12 quilt kits to be given to the Parkway Hills Methodist Church. The kits will be made into quilts and donated to the Abused and Neglected Children s Shelter. Gwen Harris has been collecting bags and she took them to the Ronald McDonald House. 3 Announcements (cont.) Joan Alliston announced that she will be teaching a beginning quilters class at the Rankin County Extension Center on Marquette Rd. in Brandon beginning on May 10th for the first session. Sewing machines are available if you do not own one. Diane Cameron announced there were several families in need after the tornado struck Yazoo City on April 24th. A will be sent out regarding the fabric colors and size of blocks to be created and put together at out monthly sit and sew session. Minutes of the Meeting Minutes were approved as printed. Treasurer s Report Mary Trest is out of town, but sent a report that we have $4, in our bank account. Creating four strips and placing a solid center. Program (cont.) A bargello quilt could be considered a string quilt. Making miniature blocks. Sit and Sew Don t forget our Sit and Sew will be on May 12th. The last time we met we put together 3 small charity quilts. This time we will have other projects to work on. Please come and help. We can always use another pair of hands. The old stand by is Log Cabin Blocks Program The program was given by Cindy Pannier and Dorinda Evans entitled String Quilts. Cindy began by explaining how String quilts were made for necessity. Fabrics of all type were sometimes used and a variety of foundation materials for quilts were adopted. This is an example of a antique quilt Cindy brought. 4 Photos taken by Gwen Harris Program (cont.) Dorinda demonstrated different lay outs after your blocks are completed to get different locks. Block rotation Program (cont.) You can use string pieced fabric as a border. This quilt with a Celtic insert in it was made by Dorinda Evans. Using a strong color in the center of your block This demonstrates how you can use pieced fabric to make a sashing for a quilt. Another technique is to use a Drunkard s Path pattern with stripped fabric. Note the black and red colors in the center of the four blocks. This technique will create more originality This quilt was made by Dorinda Evans and the name of it is Picket Fence. Using light, medium and dark colors together, then cut on an angle creates this zig zag pattern. Another method is to simply overlay blocks with a solid colored fabric thus creating a completely different look. Recommended patterns were from Strips and Strings, String Quilts and Australian Patchwork Magazine. Dorinda Evans made this quilt for her brother. She used half squares and squares to make

Outstanding Mississippi Quilter Exhibit Members Joan Alliston and Georgia Polk have been working on having a display of quilts hanging suspended from the ceiling in the Main building at the Agricultural and Forestry Museum The museum location is 1150 Lakeland Drive in Jackson and the hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Mon thru Sat. A reception honoring these and all quilters will be held on June 26th at 2:00 pm. The quilts will be hung in late May and will hang throughout the Summer. Invite everyone you know to come and see this display. If you know a quilter whose work should be honored, please access the MQA website to complete the form.
