Quilting Lines Charlottesville Area Quilters Guild P.O. Box 6724, Charlottesville, VA December, 2016 President s Message Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all! May the New Year bring you peace, joy, friendships and dreams come true. Looking forward to Spring. Planning for the April CAQG quilt show is well underway. Raffle quilt tickets and show post cards are available through Jean Lightner-Norum. Raffle tickets make great stocking stuffers and little just because gifts. Please consider making small quilted items for the Buy It Take It and Small Projects Booths. Also consider submitting one or more of your wonderful quilts to the show and volunteering at the show in whatever capacity suits you. CAQG Quilt Show XV 2017 Strip Landscape Challenge: Use any collection of (relatively) horizontal strips of fabric to make a realistic or abstract landscape. You can use straight or curvy strips, any collection of colors or neutrals, any width or collection of widths. The strips do not have to be a consistent width (they can be wider at one end, both ends, or wider in the middle). You can use odd bits of fabric to make a strip, even selvedges, if you want. Embellishments are fine, but the point is to piece the strips to make a landscape, not applique a picture. Adding details with your quilting is always encouraged! Each quilt should be 15 high by 20 wide, including edge finish. If you have any questions, contact Janice Walker farmin@cstone.net. Looking forward to seeing many of you at the April CAQG Quilt Show. Alda Vidrich President CAQG Member Events Exhibit by Jane Fellows New Works: Original designs, Botanical in Nature Landscapes, Still Lifes, and Florals. Where: Crozet library in Crozet When: February 28, April 11, 2017

Chapter News Crozet Quilters Catherine Genovese Crozet quilters plan to have a Sashiko challenge at the Spring quilt show. We are all busy stitching for that. Just before my surgery on October 7, I brought one of our two planned quilts for hospice to that facility in Charlottesville. They were very gracious and grateful. The second quilt is ready almost ready for quilting. Court House Steps Mona Houle We will be joining Tuesday Morning for their Christmas party on December 13 th. We ve had people away for the holidays, recovering from that awful cold that s going around and so on. Continuing to finish up Christmas presents and sharing ideas for new projects. Here s wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season and a very happy New Year. Moonlighters Alda Vidrich Moonlighters. Moonlighters pot luck Christmas/Holiday party to take place on December 14 at the Fontana Court club-house, thanks to Janet Saulsbury. January will see a change in the leadership of Moonlighters as Alda Vidrich steps down and Linda Boone takes on the post of chapter representative. We look forward to the capable leadership and new vision that Linda will provide. Moonlighters extend their wish for a very Merry Christmas and a New Year of peace, friendships and time to pursue your passion, be it quilting or other, to all members of the CAQG family. Nelson Quilters Mary Anne Stevens Our community Quilt for the Piney River Fire Department raffle in February 2017 has been completed. We are organizing a group project to make row quilts and thinking ahead to Spring Fest for possible speakers. A good time was had by all who attended our Christmas dinner and Fabric Exchange at the home of Margret and Tom Bomar. A big thank you to Margret for hosting the dinner. Tuesday Morning Karen Horridge Teaching, learning, guiding, mentoring, enabling, supporting, encouraging, supplying are all words/actions that describe what goes on at any Tuesday Morning meeting. New members are certainly welcomed. It was such a privilege to have Irene Blanck teaching the Fall Workshops. There should be some beautiful appliqued pieces completed in the next few months. Members are now completing Christmas projects and will celebrate the holiday season with a luncheon being held on the 13 th. 4 CAQG Quilt Show XV April 1 & 2, 2017 Notes and Reminders for the Quilt Show Quilt Show Entries: In this newsletter, there are instructions for the quilt show entry form, please read them carefully. We want to see your quilts in the show!!!!! This is for all of us to share with the community and our fellow quilters. Think about those treasured quilts you ve created and want to finish for the show. Please make sure you put a 4 sleeve on all quilts. The directions are included in this newsletter. Sometimes the smaller quilts might be pinned to sheets or hung differently and won t need a sleeve, but check with me to make sure. Raffle Quilt: The more we can get this beautiful, colorful quilt out so that people can see it and want to buy the winning ticket, the better. If you know of a quilt shop, library, or any other venue that would be willing to display the raffle quilt and sell raffle tickets, please contact Jessica Lemon (jmlemon14@gmail.com) Publicity: VERY IMPORTANT! If you have any ideas or knowledge of newspapers, magazines, online media, newsletters etc. where we can advertise our quilt show, please contact Del Horan, Susie Porter and/or Ann Robertson with the information (see committee list, page 5, for contact info). They will have posters, so if there s a specific space where a poster can be displayed, again, please contact the Publicity Committee. Buy It! Take It! Booth: If you have quilts that you would like to donate, table runners, any small wall hangings that you made to practice new techniques, but don t want to keep consider giving them to Betty Marshall for this booth at the show. No size restriction on quilts accepted due to having more booth space. Questions? Contact Betty Marshal (bhm42@embarqmail.com). Small Projects Booth: Please begin thinking about and making small fabric/quilted item to be sold at our 2017 quilt show. Consider making Christmas ornaments to hang on a tabletop tree display. I have included many small project ideas on the TM Facebook page. Contact Alicia MacWright (macw13@hotmail.com) if you have any questions. General Chapter Challenges: I know that several chapters have been working on challenges for the past two years. Please let me know which chapters would like to enter their challenges (name of challenge), the approximate size of the quilts, and about how many. No need to be exact at this time, it s just to give me an idea of how many quilts will be entered in addition to the regular entries. Mona Houle mrghoule@gmail.com

Quilt Show XV Committee (Continued) (see Guild membership list for member phone numbers) Raffle Quilt Display: Jessica Lemon Task: Takes charge of the raffle quilt and organizes its display to promote ticket sales Show Challenge Quilt: Janice Walker Directions for Quilt Show Entry Forms 2017 Please read the forms carefully and fill them out completely. Send the forms to Linda Boone (address is on the bottom of the form). Please, one (1) form per quilt. Two (2) photos per quilt approximately 3 x3 in size. *** Note: Stripped Landscape Challenge quilts do not need photos. Please be sure to use the Special Instruction box in the top right hand corner of the entry form for all the quilts that fall outside the usual categories of small, medium and large groups ie. Quilt show challenge quilts, any chapter challenge quilts, any other special instructions, etc. Hanging Sleeves: Please make sure that ALL your quilts have a 4 hanging sleeve on it. Any quilt without a sleeve, unless it will be pinned on a sheet, will not be able to hang in the show. Directions are included in this newsletter. Descriptions: Please take the time to be detailed in your descriptions. I m sure many of you have looked at quilts in a show and wished that the person had given you more information on the technique, or where an idea came from, or who the pattern designer was etc. Also, give credit where credit is due. Insurance: The whole structure of the insurance has changed. We had our insurance through NQA and since they dissolved last year, we had to change carriers. I would suggest that if you would like your quilts to be insured, that you have them appraised and include them under your homeowner s policy. I am still researching this, so if I come up with a better solution, I will let you know as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Mona Houle mrghoule@gmail.com

To Make a Hanging Sleeve by Helen Marshall Cut a piece of backing fabric 1" smaller than the finished width x 8". This allows for a 1/4" double hem on each end and positions the sleeve 1" in from each side. The bright blue is the right side of the fabric and the light blue is the wrong of the fabric in the following illustrations. Fold the fabric for the sleeve in half lengthwise right sides out, raw edges together. Finger press the fold. Open the fabric and place the raw edges to the finger pressed fold and press with the iron. This will be the sewing lines. Turn the sleeve to the wrong side and sew the lengthwise seam with a 1/4" seam (right sides together). Press the seam open and turn to the right side. Turn in a double 1/4" seam on each of the short ends and machine stitch. In other words, you are encasing the raw edge inside the stitched hem.

To Make a Hanging Sleeve (continued) Position the sleeve with the seam facing the back of the quilt and the short ends 1" in from either side and butting up to the binding at the top. Sleeve positioned on quilt back Pin along the top pressed line and hem in place. Push the excess fabric up to the binding and pin in place. This bulge will accommodate the hanging rod. The bottom pressed line is sewn in position and the top row of pins is taken out. The side view of the sleeve will look like this. Sew the short ends closest to the quilt to the quilt back. I buy a length of finished wood approximately 2" deep and cut it to the width of the hem of the binding, screw in a screw eye to each cut end. Then, either add a string or wire as you would to hang a picture or position nails on the wall for the screw eyes to slip over.
