November 8, :00 P.M. 325 North Third Street Fairborn, Ohio Visitors Welcome $5.00 Speaker Fee REMINDER: All meetings are now SCENT FREE, thank you. Appraisers Determine what Quilts are Worth Come to this month s meeting to find out what professional quilt appraisers look for in determining the worth of a quilt. Dee Dadik and Molly Butler have more than four decades of experience in the quilt world. The title of their talk this month is The Price Is Right? What is your Quilt Worth? They will be bringing several quilts to show us what they look for when appraising a quilt. This is a must attend, don t miss talk. Bring a friend to learn about the world of appraising quilts. Visitors are welcome. There is a $5 speaker fee. The December meeting will feature our carry-in pot-luck dinner and a quilt square drawing. Information is printed on page 2. Don t Get Left Out in the Cold when the M.V.Q.G Ship the K.I.S.S. Sails Plenty of time to register for the Feb retreat still exists. Reserve your stateroom and your sewing space. Don t get left out in the cold when the M.V.Q.G ship the K.I.S.S. sails. Our cargo is not barrels of monkeys but barrels of fun, laughter, food, sewing, and, most important, camaraderie. Get up early and enjoy your free, tasty breakfast. Stay up late and perhaps you will experience a midnight buffet of goodies brought by your fellow quilters, or perhaps you would like to have some yummy food delivered from one of the many, many nearby food establishments. So don t be late, save the date, support your guild, and sign on board for the time of your life at the K.I.S.S. retreat February 18, 19, and 20, 2017 Mary Lou McCormick, Vice President cinemabuff@sbcglobal.net A Note from the President What a great turnout for our meeting in October. I've heard from several of you stating that you really enjoyed the meeting and so did I. It's great to have a wonderful designer/speaker like Deb Strain with so much energy, who lives not far from us. Well I don't know about you, but life is moving too fast. It's hard to believe that it's almost November and harder to believe that I've been president for two years come December. If you're interested and/or have someone in mind for that position, please let me know. Thank you, Sherry Gorby, President slgflwrpot73@aol.com
Make Blocks To Win Raffle In December, we will again have our annual Christmas pot-luck dinner and a chance to win a drawing for pre-made squares. This year, let s make the Churn Dash block 12 ½ x 12 ½. The instructions and a picture are printed at the end of this newsletter and are available on the Guild website. Please use Christmas colors. If you make two blocks and turn them in, your name will be entered in the drawing. If you make 5 blocks, 3 more, you will get your name added to the drawing twice. Then, for every 3 blocks you make, you will receive a ticket. Whoever wins the drawing will have until the July meeting 2017 meeting to make and exhibit a quilt top. The winner will then receive a $50 gift certificate from the Little Shop of Stitches. Instructions are at the end of this newsletter and on the guild website. Third Monday Sew-in The November 3rd Monday Stitch-in will be on Monday, November 21, at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Jan Delehanty, 9507 Wellbaum Road, Brookville. If you plan to attend, please call Jan at so she will know how many to expect. Hope to see you there! Library Offers Inspiration for Quilt Projects A revised listing of the MVQG Library has been prepared and is posted on the guild website: The library is your FREE resource for inspiration. Each month we bring a crate of quilting books and displays them in the back of the room. Guild members are free to peruse the selection from the Guild's huge inventory and check out a book or two to take home for a month. Books are due back at the following meeting. The complete library inventory list is on the Guild's website under Library. If you see a book you would like to check out, Tere at terequilts@yahoo.com and include the book name and box number and, if it is available, Tere will bring it to the next meeting for you. me to reserve a book from our complete listing on the Guild web site.. Visit the Library table at the next meeting. Maybe you will get that inspiration for your next project! Tere Homer Librarian terequilts@yahoo.com
QOV Will Collect Block Donations in November The 5th Annual Quilts of Valor block drive is here! Please bring your 12-1/2" UNFINISHED patriotic blocks to the November guild meeting! These can be made in any pattern, in red, white, blue, gold, and cream colors. When you arrive at the meeting, you can hand in your blocks at the QOV table in the back of the room. For every block that you turn in, please sign your name on a slip of paper that is provided for a chance to win a gift card to an area quilt store! The more blocks you make, the better your chances! The first block drive was the beginning of our QOV project, and through your generosity and hard work, we've awarded over 140 Quilts of Valor in the past 4 years! These blocks really help us make quilt tops quickly - and they are so beautiful and loved! Our next Sew-In will be on Thursday, Nov. 17 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at The Little Shop of Stitches in Miamisburg. We had 20 quilters at our October Sew-In! Please sign up at the back table if you plan to come so that we have an accurate count for space and projects! Because we have been accomplishing so much at our monthly Sew-Ins, we have a number of tops that need quilting. If you can help out, please contact me! The end of the year is a busy time for QOV, so it would be good to have a few completed quilts on hand. Most of this year, the quilts come in and go out within a few weeks! But we always have one when there is a need, and I am so grateful to all of you for your support of this project! Can't wait to see your blocks! Debbie Ginsburg, Quilts of Valor Coordinator debgins@aol.com Weekly Senior Center Sew-In Days Come join the MVQG Sew-In days at the Fairborn Senior Center for each Monday. We are able to sew from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every week. We have more room to sew and to layout quilts. The price is $2.00 to sew. If you are a member of the Fairborn Senior Center it is $1.00. For those who may be interested, the Fairborn Senior Center has lunch available on Mondays for $3.00. Call on Fridays to sign up for lunch on Monday. All are welcome to attend the weekly sew-ins. Come and get to know other members of the guild. You can come for a few hours or stay all day. Bring a project and sew, sew, sew. You can sew on something for yourself or work on projects for Community Quilts. Bring your sewing machine, tools and supplies, or do some hand work. Irons will be available. No home interruptions!!! Just as with guild meetings, the sewin will be cancelled if the Senior Center is closed or dates may be changed during holiday periods. Come and have a fun time laugh and sew!!! If you have any questions, contact: Janet Stohr jstohr@att.net
Donations Needed for Raffle Quilt The pattern chosen for the next MVQG show raffle quilt is a Dresden plate in spring colors. If you are willing to donate fabric for the quilt, we are looking for 2.5 inch strips at least 5.5 inches long in medium to dark pinks, yellows, oranges, blues, greens and lavenders. Solids or very small prints will work. Since it is difficult to return donated fabrics which are not used, please be aware the unused fabrics will be given to the quilt show fabric bags that sell for $5. Please bring donations to the November guild meeting. I will have a bin available to collect the fabric. Thank you for any help. 7 DECEMBER BLOCK: THE CHURN DASH This December we will again have our annual Christmas pot-luck dinner and a chance to win a drawing for pre-made squares. This year, let s make the Churn Dash block 12 ½ x 12 ½. The instructions and a picture are here. There will be a few samples and printed out instructions at the October meeting. If you make two blocks and turn them in, your name will be entered in the drawing. If you make 5 blocks, 3 more, you will get your name added to the drawing twice. Then, for every 3 blocks you make, you will receive a ticket. Whoever wins the drawing will have until the July meeting 2017 to make and exhibit a quilt top. The winner will then receive a $50 gift certificate from the Little Shop of Stitches. Please use Christmas colors. Here are the instructions for one block: FABRIC: You will need 4 contrasting colors CUTTING: FABRIC A: 2 ½ x 19 strip (cut 1) 5 x 5 square (cut 2) FABRIC B: 4 ½ x 4 ½ square (cut 1) FABRIC C: 2 ½ x 19 strip (cut 1) FABRIC D: 5 x 5 square (cut 2) STRIP-PIECED UNITS The Churn Dash has 4 stripieced units on the sides, top, and bottom of the block. Sew the A and C srips together lengthwise (Fig. 2-3). Set the seam and press toward the darker fabric. Square up the end of the strip-set and cut into four (4) 4 ½ x 4 ½ squares (Fig. 2-4).
HALF-SQUARE TRIANGLE UNITS (HSTs) Draw a diagonal line across the back of the 5 x 5 square of Fabric A (Fig. 2-5). Pair the 5 x 5 squares of Fabrics A and D right sides together. Sew ¼ on either side of the line (Fig. 2-6). Set the seam and cut on the line (Fig. 2-7). The little triangles that stick out at the corners are called dog ears. Trim them off to reduce bulk in the final block (Fig. 2-8). With the HST still folded in half, match the 4 ½ marks on the ruler with the seam (Fig. 2-11) and trim the excess fabric. Open the triangle unit, press the seam toward the darker fabric.
ASSEMBLY Lay out the strip-pieced units, HST s, and the Fabric B square (Fig. 2-12) To speed up assembly of a block, you may use this chain-piecing technique. Begin with the top 2 units on the left and sew them together (Fig. 2-13). Without cutting the thread, sew together the 2 middle left units, and then sew the 2 bottom left units together. Again, without cutting the thread, sew the right units to the previously sewn left units (Fig. 2-14). Cut the threads and press the seams in the direction of the arrows. Pin and sew the top 2 rows together and then pin and sew the bottom row on the block (Fig. 2-15). Press the rows following the arrows. The completed Churn Dash block should measure 12 ½ x 12 ½. TIP: Heavily starch the strip fabric before cutting. This will help minimize stretching along the bias edges. All info is taken from the following book: Gardunia, Leila, and Marlene Oddie. You Can Quilt! Building Skills for Beginners. American Quilter s Society, 2015.
