Fabric Requirements 1 Moda Designer Jelly Roll 1 Moda Basics Jelly Roll 3.75m Backing Fabric 50cm Binding Fabric Notions TIP: When selecting a jelly roll for this project, choose one that has darker colours for the best results. This will give the maximum contrast between the main fabric and the background colour. 12½ square ruler with 45 line mark This pattern is based on a Moda Jelly Roll which consist of 40, 44 strips of fabric. All seams are ¼. Finished Size 67 x 67 Please read the instructions carefully before commencing the project. This pattern was written by Shontelle Stanyer of England Street Quilts (englandstreet.blogspot.com.au), drawing inspiration from the You Tube clip by Missouri Star Quilt Company ( A little note before we begin This pattern is written specifically for Moda Jelly rolls, but you don t need to use a jelly roll for this pattern, you can use 2½ strips that you have cut yourself. If you choose to do this, you will need (33) coloured strips and (33) plain strips. When cutting the strips you may wish to starch them to prevent fraying. Organising your fabric From the designer jelly roll, choose 33 strips darker fabrics will give you the best results. Take 33 strips from the basics jelly roll. You are now ready to sew. Let s go make a quilt! Page 2 of 7
Making Strip Sets Note - The edges of Moda Jelly Rolls are pinked. This forces a question when sewing: where do you line your ¼ foot up?. I suggest that you just pick a point and be consistent. I lined mine up with the peak of the pinked edges but you could just as easily use the trough, as sometimes that can be easier to see. It is important to note that the point you choose to line up with will have a slight effect on the width of your seams, which in turn will have an effect on step 2 of the cutting stage. Step 1 Making Strip Set A Using ¼ seams, sew together two coloured jelly roll strips and one background strip from the basics jelly roll along the long edge. Use the background strip to separate the two coloured strips (Diag. 1). We will call this Strip Set A. You need 11 of these strip sets. Set the seam and press to the darker fabric as you add each strip. This will keep your seams straight and prevent bowing. You may also like to use spray starch when pressing to give the fabric body (I recommend Mary Ellen s Best Press). This will help prevent stretching of the bias when you cut your blocks in step 1 on page 4. Tip To prevent bowing when sewing strip sets, alternate the direction you sew as you add each new strip. If you always have the darker fabric facing you as you put them through the machine this will happen automatically and save confusion about which direction to sew. Diag. 1 - Strip set A Step 1 Making Strip Set B This time, make your strip sets using one coloured jelly roll strip to separate two background strips, as illustrated in diagram 2. We will call this Strip Set B. Again, you need 11 of these strip sets. Set your seams and press to the darker fabric as you add each new strip. Use spray starch if desired. Diag. 2 - Strip Set B Page 3 of 7
Step 3 Making Tubes Now you are going to turn your strip sets into tubes. Place an A strip set right sides together with a B strip set. Make sure to line up the edges neatly and sew a ¼ seam along both edges of the strip set to create a tube. Your tube should now look like this Diag. 3 - Lining up your tubes Diag. 4 - Sewing your tubes Repeat Step 3 until you have 11 tubes, ready to cut into blocks. Cutting Step 1 Lay your tube out on your cutting mat. Place the 45 line of your ruler along the seam. This is important: do not line it up with the base of the tube line it up along the seam. Using a rotary cutter, cut along the left hand side of the ruler to make a 45 angle. Diag. 5 Setting the ruler Page 4 of 7
Step 2 Keeping the 45 line along the bottom seam, slide your ruler to the right until the upper right hand edge of the ruler is just under the top seam line (point A). Now, take careful note of where the cut edge of the tube lies under the ruler s scale and write this measurement down (mine was 8¼ ). The number itself is not critical, just be sure to line your ruler up with this same point every time. See Diagram 6. Note This point is referred to throughout the pattern as 8¼ because that s what it measured on my quilt, and for the sake of consistency. But remember the Note in the Strip Set section? This is where your point may vary, depending on the reference point you chose when assembling the strip sets and the tubes, and the ¼ foot on your individual machine. Just remember: taking care to be accurate and consistent when you line your ruler up with this point every time will result in evenly sized blocks and a lovely square quilt in the end. So, with your ruler lined up so that the 45 line is along the bottom seam and your ruler s 8¼ line is along the cut you made in the previous step, use your rotary cutter to cut along the right hand side of the ruler. A Diag. 6 - First cut Page 5 of 7
Step 3 Slide the ruler up so that the 45 line is now along the top seam and again line up the 8¼ line of the ruler with the edge you cut in the previous step. Use your rotary cutter to cut along the right hand side of the ruler. Diag. 7 - Second cut Continue in this manner, cutting triangles by alternately aligning the top and bottom seams of the tube with the ruler s 45 line. Each tube should yield 6 triangles. Step 4 Set the seam, then open out the block and press to the darker fabric. Repeat until you have 66 blocks like this: Diag. 8 - Finished block Page 6 of 7
Quilt Layout Lay out the blocks in rows, as shown. Using a ¼ seam, sew the blocks into rows and press. Alternate the pressing direction for interlocking seams. Next, sew the rows together and press. When your quilt top is complete sew a scant ¼ row of stay stitching around the entire edge of the quilt to prevent your seams from coming undone and your quilt from stretching during the quilting process. All done! Now just quilt bind and enjoy! Page 7 of 7
