Jinny Beyer s Diamond Chain Table Runner is a fast and fun project suitable for quilters of all skill levels.

Designed for pre-cut 2½" strips, beautifully shaded fabrics from Jinny s Malam II batik collection make up the stripes. There s no tricky piecing or odd angles it s all straight seam sewing!

Read the entire pattern before beginning. A walking foot is recommended.

2 Jinny Beyer s Diamond Chain Table Runner is a fast and fun project suitable for quilters of all skill levels. The pattern steps you through creating the intricate-looking but easy-to-make diamond center. Designed for pre-cut 2½" strips, beautifully shaded fabrics from Jinny s Malam II batik collection make up the stripes. There s no tricky piecing or odd angles it s all straight seam sewing! Plus, the quilt-as-you-go method means you ll have a completed project in much less time. All seam allowances are ¼-inch. WOF = Width of Fabric. Press after sewing each seam. Read the entire pattern before beginning. A walking foot is recommended. Step 1: Make Templates & Cut Fabrics Using the patterns on page 4 and 5 and semi-transparent template plastic, make Templates A and B/Br. With a permanent marker, mark the the solid cutting and dotted sewing lines, and grain line arrows on the plastic. Label the templates and cut them out on the solid lines. Fabrics 1-6: Cut four pieces measuring 2½" x 18" from each fabric. Fabric 7: If planning to make binding from bias strips, cut a 27" square and set aside for binding. From the remaining fabric, cut three strips measuring 2½" x 27". Alternatively, if planning to make straight grain binding, cut two strips measuring 2½" x WOF" and set aside the remaining fabric for binding. From the strips, use Template A to cut 14 diamond patches. Tester s Tip: Spraying the Fabric 7 strips with starch or other pressing aid before cutting the diamonds can reduce the amount of bias stretch, improving sewing accuracy. Fabric 8 - Following the Border Print Cutting Layout on page 5, cut out the following: together as shown, carefully pinning to match the design motifs. Repeat for the remaining pair, then sew the two pairs together. Trim the sharp points of the medallion using the blunt tip of Template A. Slide the template up the medallion until its sides match the fabric edges. Trim off the fabric tip. Repeat for the opposite point. Tester s Tip: Take care when handling the B/Br patches until sewn as the shorter sides are bias edges and are easily stretched. Step 3: Prepare the Strips One end of all of the Fabric 1-6 and Fabric 8 strips need to be cut on an angle before the runner is constructed. To ensure that both sets of Fabric 8 strips are oriented the same way on the table runner, be sure to position the fabric design as illustrated below and on page 2. Angle the Strips. Collect two of each of the Fabric 1-6 and Fabric 8 strips. As in the diagram below, place Template A on each of these strips, sliding it down so that the side with the asterisk (*) is near the end of the strip. Mark the angle and then trim off the excess. B Br Br B B/Br Triangles: Referring to the Note on Cutting Border Print Patches on page 3, cut out two identical B triangles. Then flip the template over so the marked side is on the fabric. Match the design motifs on the fabric with the template markings and cut out two identical Br triangles. End Stripes: From the narrow design stripe on the fabric, cut four identical 20" long pieces. Be sure to include ¼-inch of seam allowance fabric on both long sides of the strips as illustrated in the Border Print Cutting Layout diagram. Batting: Prepare a piece of batting 18" x 85". Draw lines down the center vertically and horizontally. Backing: Cut fabric measuring 18" x 85" for the backing, piecing as necessary. Step 2: Make Center Medallion To make the center medallion, sew a B and a Br triangle Jinny Beyer s 2½" Perfect Cut 60 Diamond acrylic template makes quick work of cutting, trimming and marking these diamonds. Sew the Diamonds to the Angled Strips. Working with the trimmed strips, place a strip and a Fabric 7 diamond right sides together.

Angle the diamond so that the trimmed corner is aligned with the top edge of the strip, and the raw edges of the two pieces match. Pin, sew the seam, then press the diamond right side out. Next, sew a pieced Fabric 1 strip to the opposite side, aligning the long raw edges and the angled edge of the medallion with the blunt tip of the first strip. Angle Remaining Strips. Two of each of the Fabric 1-6 and Fabric 8 strips remain. Flip Template A upside down so the marked side is on the right side of the fabric. Place the template on one end of the fabric strips so that the side marked with a double asterisk (**) is near the raw edge. Mark the angles and trim off the excess, including the tip at the top of the strip, as in the diagrams below. Repeat so that all of the strips are trimmed. Flip the strip right side out and press. The tip of the diamond should line up with the marked center line on the batting. The opposite end of the strips are oversized and will not be even. Continue to add strips in this way, working from Fabric 1 through Fabric 6, then adding the Fabric 8 border strips. (The second strip of each pair sewn down is always the strip with the Fabric 7 diamond.) Step 4: Sew the Table Runner Lay the batting on the wrong side of the backing fabric and baste in place along the marked lines and ¼" inside the raw edges. Center the medallion on the batting, aligning the seams with the marked lines. Pin in place. As in the diagram below, sew a regular Fabric 1 strip to the medallion, aligning the long raw edges and the angled edge of the strip with the blunt tip of the medallion. Flip the strip right side out and press. Once the first side is complete, repeat for the opposite side of the center diamond. Remove the pins. As in the diagram below, position a quilter s ruler on the runner so that the ¼" line is just beyond the tip of the center medallion.

4 Step 5: Finish the Table Runner Trim the batting and backing even with the pointed ends of the table runner. Next, the long sides of the runner are trimmed, allowing a generous ¼" seam allowance beyond the tip of the center medallion. As in the diagram below, position a quilter s ruler on the runner so that the ¼" line is just beyond the tip of the center medallion. (This leaves a ¼" seam allowance for your binding plus just a bit to ensure that the medallion tip will not get caught in the seam.) Mark the cutting line (red line) across the length of the runner. During construction, the runner might have stretched a little. To ensure the sides are cut evenly, note the line on the ruler that intersects with the medallion points in the in the center of the runner (green line). As you slide the ruler along the runner to mark the cutting line, taking care that that same line runs through the middle of the smaller diamonds. Trim through all layers. Repeat for the opposite side. Remove the basting stitches from the backing. ¼" line Quilt the center medallion and any other areas as desired. Using the reserved Fabric 7, make binding strips. Bind using your favorite method. For tips on binding, including handling the odd angles of the table runner, visit Note on Cutting Border Print Patches Place the template on the border print fabric, aligning the sewing line under the grainline arrow with a printed line on the border print fabric. This will create pleasing symmetry and a defining edge when the patch is sewn. B To help you cut multiple identical patches, draw a portion of the design motif from the fabric onto the template. Mark around the template, then find that drawn motif elsewhere on the fabric for the next patch. To make the reversed patches, flip the template over so the marked side is on the fabric. Shift the template to find the fabric design that matches the markings. Mark around the template and repeat to find the desired number of identical patches. Cut out the marked patches. Br 3

The template will measure 15 5 /16" along the base. Template Size Check This box should measure 2 inches square. If the box does not measure 2", your templates/foundations will not be the correct size. If you are printing at home, be sure your printer is set to print at 100% with no scaling. 4
