1 OLD CAPITOL QUILTERS GUILD VOLUME 33 ISSUE 7 APRIL 2014 Monthly Meeting - April 14 INSPIRATIONS Carolyn Abbott will be the speaker at our April meeting and will also teach workshops on Sunday, April 13, and Tuesday, April 15. Carolyn graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Applied Art Education and an emphasis on fine crafts. In 1979 her interests expanded to include quilting. She has taught quilting in the Brainerd, MN, area for many years and is the owner of Flying Colors Fabric and Design. Where do art quilters get their inspirations? Along with showing us her art quilts, Carolyn will share photos of nature, man-made architecture and simple objects all around her that have inspired these quilts. Working with Thicken Dyes Workshop Sunday, April 13, 2014: 9:00-4:30 p.m. 2 openings at Home Ec, 207 North Linn St., Iowa City Tuesday, April 15, 2014: Class is Full Fiber reactive dyes can be used for immersion dyeing, but when sodium alginate is added to the dyes to thicken them, exciting new ways can be used to color one s fabrics. The thickened dyes can be used for painting, stamping, mono printing, scraping, silk screening and drawing on fabric. Use thickened dyes to create your own fabric to cut up for quilt making, for whole cloth quilting, or as art cloth. In this class we will explore easy ways of applying thickened dyes to fabric using simple tools and silk screens. Cost: $30 plus $10 materials fee There are 2 openings for the Sunday class (Tuesday s class is full). For questions or to register for the Sunday workshop please contact Pam Ehrhardt at or her at pam@lastingpiece.com Hostesses for April Katherine Konz Glenda Skallerud Chris Lynn Kirsch and one of the many quilts she shared with us at the March meeting. Her program, Threads Untangled, was very informative. Photos from the Tuesday workshop can be found on page 6.

2 Page 2 April 2014 PRESIDENT S PATCH Dear Old Capitol Quilters Guild members: For some hobbies, going on vacation is a breeze. Take fishing for example: tackle box, a rod, your done. And when you get to your destination it gets even better. Just take a walk to the end of the dock or jump into a boat and you re set to fish. Well, not quilting. Recently I took a road trip with the family to my inlaws who live in Texas. The last time we came down I brought my hand embroidery and sewing machine so that I could put together a t-shirt quilt for my father-in -law. This time I was not going to bring the machine or any sewing and just read books. My hubby, however, stated that if I didn t pack it all up he would. I packed it, looked at the massive stack (machine, cutting board, rulers, projects, notions and tools bags) and thought this is crazy. We have a van that all this has to fit in. Then there s still the luggage, kids entertainment items (books, sewing cards, blocks, etc.) plus our four bodies need space to be comfortable for a 14 hour drive. That night, before we left, I said it s not worth it and dragged everything back into the sewing room telling my hubby, No, I don t want to haul this. We went to sleep, van packed with fishing gear and boy toys. I woke up at 4:00 in the morning with an uneasy feeling. I went into the sewing room still thinking, I could go on vacation without my sewing. Two hours later the sewing machine and all the stuff that goes with it was out in the living room waiting to be loaded and on the road. You see I do a lot of sewing but seventy five percent or more of that sewing is done for everyone but me. I realized when I was first packing I was still thinking about all the sewing for other people that I do--mending, alterations, piecing--you know the not so fun sewing stuff. I went in to the sewing room, looked around and saw all the stuff I wanted to work on this time around. I repacked, taking out any projects that didn t feel like fun and repacked. Ready for the van and sewing quilt fabric I d had in my stash for 5 years, fun baby gifts, lunch wrappers and scraps. Looking at it, still fifty-fifty for me and for others but it s all 100 percent things I want to make! Hubby knows me well. Sewing is a need for me. It would not be a vacation without fun sewing projects. Just as it would not be vacation for him without his fishing gear. So pack it up and schlep it along and have FUN sewing, Sarah Library Report The Library Committee inventoried our holdings in February and culled unused books. There are not many books pulled this time. We will sell them in May prior to the beginning of the meeting. If you have books you'd like to donate for sale, we'll be glad to sell those, too. Proceeds will go to the Guild treasury. As they have been for the last few years, the books will sell for $2. Any left will be donated to the Crowded Closet. The library added five new titles in March. These are: Adventures in Design by Joen Wolfrom The Quilting Arts Book by Patricia Bolton Quilting Happiness by Diane Gilleland and Christina Lane Art Quilt Maps by Valerie S. Goodwin Quilting a Circle of Nine by Janet Houts and Jean Ann Wright Tip of the Month: A good exercise to practice free motion quilting is to quilt your name over and over. Focus on the way you want your name to look and not on the mechanics of quilting.

3 Page 3 April 2014 Block-of-the-Month There is no new block of the month for April. If you wish, make some 9-patch blocks (February newsletter) or Rail Fence blocks (March newsletter). 9-Patch Block Cut 5 pieces each 3 ½ square of dark fabric. Meanwhile check out Joanie s website to see samples of her work. heirloomquiltingdesigns.com Astronomical Quilts! Block Challenge You are invited to participate in a block challenge with NASA Astronaut Karen Nyberg. While on board the International Space Station, Nyberg created a star-themed quilt block that will be returning to earth with her. Her block will be combined with other blocks submitted by the public to create a quilt that will be displayed at the International Quilt Festival next fall 2014 in Houston. The Details: Create a star-themed 9.5 square unfinished block (so that when quilted, it will be a 9 finished block). The theme should be any variation of a star. We welcome all types traditional, modern, and artsy variations. Limit one block per person. Use any color scheme and techniques you would like, but please do not use any embellishments. Sign your unfinished block on the front with a permanent marker. Please include your name and your location. Mail your block by August 1, 2014, to: Star Bock Challenge, Attn: Rhianna Griffin 7660 Woodway, Ste. 550 Houston, TX OCQG Upcoming Retreats The fall retreat will be held at the Crooked Creek Christian Camp on September 19-21, Registration form will be in the May newsletter. The UI Lifetime Enrichment Adult Program (LEAP) has recently published their course guide for Spring LEAP is a lifelong learning program for adults of all ages (primarily over 50) living in southeastern Iowa. LEAP programs are open to the public, you do not have to be a UI staff member or retiree to attend. The following is copied with permission from their recent course guide. Melanie McNiel, one of our members, and past president, is the presenter. The Underground Railroad Quilt Code: History, Mystery, or Bunk? Did quilts help guide escaped slaves to safety? Did different quilt blocks have specific meanings to slaves, perhaps based on their African past? Was the pattern of stitches and knots informative about routes to take, perhaps creating a topographical map? The most famous telling of a quilt code says that quilts were a vital part of the Underground Railroad, and their history with it was un-written until very recently. Learn about popular quilt forms and blocks before and during the U.S Civil War. Find out what role, if any, quilts played in guiding slaves to freedom. Discover the controversies surrounding the stories and what historians believe based on the evidence. Date: Wednesday, April 9 Time: 10:00 am 12:00 pm Location: 2166 MERF Cost: $15 members of LEAP; $25 non-members Class size is limit: 20 For more information on LEAP or to register for this class: or phone OCQG Quilt Frames The Old Capitol Quilters Guild owns 4 frames on which quilts can be hung. We use them to hang presenter's quilts as well as at our quilt shows. Members are welcome to request the use of these. You can contact either Helen Dietrich at hidietrich732@gmail.com ( ) or Pam Ehrhardt at pam@lastingpiece.com ( ) who each have two frames. She will give a beginner s guide to utilizing commercial printers, such as Spoonflower, to print your designs on yardage. She will also show us how to manipulate photos and prepare designs for printing fabric on our home printers. If there is enough interest for this, a date for the workshop will be announced at the March meeting. If you are interested, please contact Pam Ehrhardt, or pam@lastingpiece.com. Challenge Rules for option 1: - Use a combination of any fabrics - Maximum of 18 inches on any given side - Must contain 3 layers top, batting, backing - Must be quilted, bound, and labeled - If using blocks, they must be 5 inches or smaller Challenge Rules for option 2: Use the fabric from your Tear Up project from the September meeting (for you who were not there and would like to enter, see Helen Dietrich at the meetings for a packet of Tear Up scraps). You can also add any other fabric but must include a piece of each of the Tear Up fabrics. Hint: It would be interesting to have a picture of the scraps with your finished project. - Maximum of 18 inches on any given side - Must contain 3 layers top, batting, background - Must be quilted, bound and labeled - If using blocks, they must be 5 inches or smaller Central Iowa Quilters Shopping Spree Ames Holiday Inn Conference Center, 2609 University Blvd. I-35/US Hwy 30 West, Exit 111 US Hwy 30 Exit 146 Friday, April 4, 10-5 and Saturday, April 5, 10-4 Gather your quilting friends and have a fantastic time visiting 14 vendors from across Iowa on this spring weekend.
