3 Page 3 March 2017 President s Patch What makes a great quilt show? Why do groups have quilts shows in the first place? With our Quilt Fest 2017: A Quilt Display looming closer, I ve been thinking about quilt shows and answers to these questions. My second question may be easier to answer or at least the answer may be more obvious. Quilt shows offer quilters the opportunity to share their art, skill and talent, and sometimes get feedback on their work. They serve to preserve the heritage of quilting and fiber arts, traditional and contemporary, through public education and exposure. They foster an awareness of quilting as a historical contribution to our culture as well as its evolution over time. OCQG s Quilt Fest 2017 will promote quilting arts and highlight our benevolent contributions to the community through our donations. In addition, Melanie McNeil s continuing-loop slide show will educate non-quilters that quilting is an art form involving hundreds of hours of work as well as considerable financial outlay. Quilt shows vary in size and focus. Large commercial shows usually include classes taught by well-known quilters and vendor booths where attendees can purchase the latest developments in the quilt world - fabrics, tools, books, and even machines. The more famous of these are annual shows. The AQS show in Paducah, known as Quilt Week, is probably the most well-known, and the city of Paducah offers their Arts and Historic District, the Floodwall Murals, and the Dogwood Trail, making Quilt Week a special destination for quilters world-wide. AQS has taken versions of their show on the road, featuring shows in Lancaster, Grand Rapids, Dayton Beach, and Des Moines. The International Quilt Festival s major show takes place in the fall in Houston. They also feature a show April 6-8 in Rosemont, Illinois near Chicago, a reasonable drive from Iowa City. Anyone interested? MQS Quilt Festivals focus on machine quilters. You may have attended one of their shows recently in Cedar Rapids. Although their focus is longarm quilting, the quilts are beautiful and of interest to all quilters. A newer annual quilt show, QuiltCon, sponsored by The Modern Quilt Guild, changes locations annually in the West in even years and in the East in odd years. Their most recent show was held in Savannah, Georgia, in February. QuiltCon 2018 will be located in Pasadena. Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in Sisters, Oregon, has taken place on the second Saturday of July since Quilts are displayed outdoors throughout the town and I ve heard it s amazing with its festive outdoor atmosphere. I discovered two unique shows while browsing online. The Western Legends Round-Up Quilt Show purports to be the best show in Southern Utah and strives to preserve and celebrate the Western heritage of quilting, including vintage and contemporary quilts. And Bulloch Hall in Roswell, Georgia, the childhood home of Theodore Roosevelt s mother, hosts a quilt show annually in March, offering quilts on display throughout the beautiful, historic home. So back to my question: what factors make a quilt show great? From what I can surmise, it s the unique character of the show combined with lots and lots of quilts. Shows don t need vendors and classes to be great. The big shows AQS, MQS and Houston have it all. But the smaller shows capitalize on the character of their locale. And that s exactly what Quilt Fest 2017: A Quilt Display does. We ve combined with Iowa City Arts Festival and Gallery Walk to enhance their programs and ours, and our quilts will be displayed in one of the most beautiful settings in downtown Iowa City. So, what else do we need to be great? Lots and lots of quilts! Have you submitted your entries yet? The deadline for entries is April 10 th, our next guild meeting. Let s make this our greatest quilt show ever! Adele

4 Page 4 March 2017 Service Committee Report Service Committee At the March meeting we received: 11 bags, 18 bibs, 27 burp cloths and 9 quilts. Thank you for all of your wonderful donations. Deliveries included 12 bags and 10 bibs to 4cs, 10 bags to Domestic Violence and 15 burp cloths to VNA. We are holding back most of the donated items for the upcoming quilt show in June. The Service Committee will have an area where we can display the various items donated as well as posters showing the various organizations that we donate to. Some of the quilts will also be displayed at the Fun Stop Booth at the quilt show on Saturday. We also received 6 fidget quilts to add to the ones we have and I know they will be well received by the care centers. Nancy Johns will be making these deliveries. however, if you are still working on one or would like to make one, you still have time to bring it to the April meeting. They have been fun to see so many creative ideas! Quilts of Valor Visit for details. We still have quilt tops in our cabinet that need to be quilted. There is no hurry in getting these returned to us so feel free to pick one up at our next meeting to work on at your leisure. Just simple quilting is all that is needed nothing fancy. Thanks again for your donations! 206 PILLOWCASES DELIVERED The Shelter House staff was thrilled to receive our 206 beautiful pillowcases. Thanks you to the many guild members who donated their time and fabric to make this happen. We would especially like to thank Linda Nudd and her small group who donated the fabric for Debbie Cooney to sew 50 pillowcases.

5 Page 5 March 2017 Quilt Registration QUILT FEST 2017 By the time you get this newsletter there will be just a couple of weeks left to complete your registration forms and submit them along with a photo of each quilt you plan to enter in the 2017 Quilt Fest. They are due at the April 10 th guild meeting. BUT WAIT, you say!! I won t have the binding or all of the quilting done by then. It may not even have a back yet! That s ok. The photo just needs to make it possible for the Set Up Committee to identify the final quilt and can be taken while it is still a work in progress. We need to allow our Registration Committee time to enter all the information for the 200 or 300 (can we hear 400??) quilts that will be in the show, so we need to get started now. You will find the registration form in this newsletter and on our website ( If the Set Up committee feels we need more quilts after reviewing the registration forms submitted by the April 10th guild meeting, we will open up registration until the May guild meeting. And another reminder about insurance: The OCGQ will not be securing insurance for quilts entered in the show. Instead, if you want your quilts insured, please consult advice provided in the January and February 2017 newsletters for securing insurance on your own. Publicity Packets The Publicity Committee has been very busy finding ways to get the word out about our show. One of those methods is getting publicity packets to quilt shops in our area. We count on our members to distribute these packets to various quilt shops when they visit them. Packets will be available at the April guild meeting, but if you know you re going to a quilt shop before then, consider checking with Chris Kirkwood (trekkie9@windstream.net) or Vicki Walch (vwalch@gmail.com) to see if that packet still needs delivery. Are you on Facebook? Help us spread the word about the Guild and build interest in attending the Show as it approaches. We just started a Facebook page for the Guild ( and created an Event page for the Quilt Fest ( Please visit both pages and click on the Like and the Follow buttons (on the OCQG page) and the Going button on the Quilt Fest Event page. Then as new news items are posted, consider sharing them with your friends and family. Vicki Walch would really love some help in juicing up the Guild s web page and Facebook presence. If you d like to pitch in, contact her at vwalch@gmail.com. Gift Baskets and Door Prizes For the first time, this year s Quilt Fest will feature gift baskets and other door prizes to be given away in a drawing. People making free-will donations (and show volunteers, too) will be rewarded with tickets to choose which of the baskets they would want to win. We hope this will be a fun addition for our visitors and our members alike, as well as a way to increase the visibility of our many fine quilt shops in the area. Show Staffing We have begun signing up volunteers to work at the quilt show and there are still many choice possibilities left. Sign-up sheets will be available as you enter the guild meeting in April and May (if needed). Here are some of the exciting jobs that you can select from: Accept quilts the morning of the show Arrange and decorate church pews Work at the entrances welcoming visitors throughout the show Handle quilts with white gloves and answer questions of visitors Assist with Silent Auction, Children s Activity, or Service area Take down and clean up This is a great way to get to know other members of the Guild and we hope that every member can participate in some way. Make plans now and sign up at the meeting. Special note: Volunteers will be given tickets to use in the Gift Basket Give Away to thank them for their service. Continued on Page 6

6 Page 6 March 2017 Silent Auction Another way members can help with the show is to donate items for the Silent Auction. Items can range from larger quilts to pin cushions. We expect many of our visitors to be quilters themselves, so think about items that would appeal to them and/or make their sewing lives easier. There will be a "Buy Now" option with the price considerably higher than the starting bid price. Items not sold at the show will be returned to the donor. Committee members will be accepting donations from now until the morning of the show. However, please get your donations in as soon as possible so show set-up goes more smoothly. Contact co-chairs Florence Stockman or Beth Yeates with any questions. Red & White Quilt Display There will be a special display of guild members red and white quilts. Please register these quilts in the same manner as other quilts. We have added a check box to the Registration Form so you can indicate it falls in the red-and-white category. Deadline is also April 10th. Questions? Contact one of the Quilt Fest co-chairs: Pam Ehrhardt (pje281@gmail.com) or Vicki Walch (vwalch@gmail.com). I'm sure we all wish her a speedy recovery. Melanie McNeil will be speaking in June about Medallion quilts and how to make these beautiful quilts. HOURS: Tuesday-Saturday 9am-5pm OCQG Website OCQG Facebook Note: It is the policy of the Guild to charge $5 to visitors attending our monthly guild meeting when we have a national speaker presenting. The past few years we have been lax in doing so. At the August 2014 board meeting this was discussed and it was decided that at future meetings, we will again be doing this. This is not to deter guests from coming to our meetings, but rather to help with the cost of bringing in a national speaker. Old Capitol Quilters Guild, Iowa City Area, NQA Chapter #IA603 Old Capitol Quilters Guild is a nonprofit organization open to anyone interested in quilts or quilting. Monthly meetings are held the second Monday of each month, September through July, at 7 p.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on 1st Ave. and Court St. in Iowa City. Dues are $25/year, renewable September 1. Guests are always welcome.
