1 2015 Issue #9 NQA #604 September 2015 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: I hope our members enjoyed the quilts and the stories of Linda Lum DeBono at our meeting. Even though I personally love the more traditional quilts, I also like the freshness of the modern quilters with their bright colors and challenging designs. I found Linda's quilts quite charming and colorful, and her personality was equally lovely. I thank our program chair for the wonderful quality of speakers we have had in past months. And, relative to that, remember that the proceeds from our quilt show go toward our ability to afford quality programs and workshops for our members. Thanks to all of you who are contributing your time and efforts to the show...keep up on all the details about the show by reading your newsletter carefully, and if you have questions, by all means direct them to each chairperson as necessary. The vendors have an exciting assortment of wonderful things to offer, and they will contribute greatly to the fun of attending our show. Included among the vendors is David Reiner, who makes beautiful, high quality wooden items such as quilt racks and hangers, and quilt storage cabinets in cherry wood with glass sides. This may be one of the last shows that David will be participating in, since he plans on retiring soon, so if you are interested in any of his special custom made wooden items, get ready to place your order at the show! Sallie Lloyd Decorating Committee (Betty Hancock) If you are part of a small sewing group could you please let me know the name of the group and the names of all members in the group. As part of the decorations for the show, I am making a paper quilt block for each small group and wanted to make sure I have included them all. Thank you. Betty Hancock Aunt Sukie (Sue Demberg and Elaine LaPrete) Hello ladies. I have tamed the pile of awesome donations so many of you have already contributed So bring it on! It's too hot to go outside, so now is a great time to organize your sewing rooms, and get rid of unwanted "stash." If you are donating fabric, it would be really helpful for us if you included approximate yardage amounts. Anything related to sewing, needle crafting, etc., is appreciated. Sue Demberg and Elaine LaPrete

4 The Newtown Quilters Guild September 2015 Page 4 Small Quilts & Gift Baskets Committee (Rosemary Dwyer and Regina Apuzzo) The Small Quilts and Gift Baskets are very popular with our quilt show visitors. Members donate these items, tickets are sold, and lucky winners take home great stuff. Member participation has always been very good, and we are hoping that will continue for our 2015 show. Here s how you can help. For the gift baskets: Grab a few quilting buddies and put together a basket, or you, alone, can fill one. Any food included in your basket must be non-perishable. Many of the baskets have a theme; such as, sewing notions, fabrics, gift cards to restaurants, tea, coffee, chocolate, etc. Use your imagination and creativity! Be sure to give your basket a name. We ask that its value be at least $ Please wrap your basket in clear cello wrap, only, and bring it to either the September guild meeting or to the show venue on the night of set-up not before, please. What we do need in advance, though, is a list of all of the items in your basket, the name of your basket, and the name(s) of the donor(s). This will give us the needed time to make tags for each one. Beginning in June, look for the sign-up sheet, near the membership desk, when you come to our meetings. For the small quilts: Now is the time to get started. Small quilts, table runners, placemats and napkins (for at least a service for four), pillows, and wool work (such as candle mats and penny rugs) are accepted. Your small quilt should be no larger than 30 x 30. We have limited space in which to display these items, so smaller is better. Items, such as mug rugs, are not placed with the small quilts. Those items can be included in a basket, along with other things; they can be sold at consignment; or they can be donated to Aunt Sukey. To give you inspiration, here are some ideas for your small quilt. You can choose to make something celebrating a season or holiday; we have had beautiful red work and blue work quilts; appliqué quilts either by hand or machine; a quilt featuring machine embroidery; and paper-pieced quilts, just to name a few. Be sure to check out the many books in our guild library for more inspiration. As soon as you have finished your project, please give it to either of us. Please do not wait until set-up night, as we need to photograph each item. We re hoping to have another great turnout for Small Quilts and Gift Baskets. So, get started on your projects. If you have any questions, please let us know. Consignment Corner (Peg Bauman and Lorie Leonardi) Time is getting short and let s face it, it s still hot outside. Spend some time inside in the AC, sorting through your quilting tools, books, etc. Make room for more stuff and pick up some extra spending money! You can sell that stuff in October at the show in the Consignment area. Consignment provides the opportunity for Newtown Quilters' Guild members (or individuals on the waiting list) to sell their sewing related items. Examples include books, patterns, notions, sewing machines, fabric, crafts, blocks, kits, and completed or uncompleted quilts. Complete guidelines for preparing items for consignment are on the website (Consignment Forms). Bring your items to the show on Friday evening during Quilt Show setup. At the end of the show, unsold items will be returned to members. By the next Guild meeting, participants will receive a check for 80 percent of the money earned; the guild will keep 20 percent. Contact Peg or Lorie if you plan to have a large number of items for consignment. Quilt Show Café (Betty Miller) The quilt show will be here before you know it. In preparation for the café this year, I would like to make a few changes. Membership can make donations to defray the cost of the purchases for the Café. Instead of donating food, water, etc., I am asking for cash donations. Every dollar helps $5.00 here and there add up. Gift cards for grocery stores should come only from Giant this year. In order to make shopping more efficient and supplies uniform. We would like individual home made desserts, i.e., cupcakes, muffins, breads, brownies, cookies, etc., rather than whole cakes. More information will follow as we get closer to the show. Please feel free to contact me with any 5254 or me at 51bjmkm@gmail.com. Betty Miller, Café Chairperson

5 The Newtown Quilters Guild September 2015 Page 5 MIDDLETOWN GRANGE FAIR 2015 A FAMILY TRADITION Where else can you see 4-H kids sleeping with cows, flower displays, sheep in coats, oddshaped veggies, canned goods, huge draft horses, 18 high sunflowers, pig races, tractor show, newly hatched chicks, crafts made by area kids and adults, Bucks County s goods and services, and amusements galore right next to a display of beautiful quilts? The Middletown Grange Fair once again did not disappoint the thousands of visitors this year. They stood in line for the chicken BBQ, and I could smell the delicious aroma from my house and it made my mouth water. If that didn t get me out of my summer stupor and out to the fair, I don t know what would. So Ron and I once again enjoyed Bucks County s very best. We ve been attending the fair for over 30 years now and honestly, it s changed very little. There are more amusement rides, which my kids would have enjoyed many years ago. Back then, going to the fair and being handed a bunch of tickets and an afternoon of freedom was something that they looked forward to every year. When they belonged to the 4-H, the summer was always a time for the kids to be hard at work at learning how to do leather craft, or crocheting, or learning to take care of calves. They d make Lego creations or paint pictures and were always anxious to see if they won a ribbon. And I ll bet that they don t remember if they ever won a ribbon, but do remember the fun they had at the fair every year. Kim Moll and Linda Smith were represented by their beautiful quilts and won ribbons for their fine work. It looks like there is quite a bit of quilting being done in Bucks County by the many examples on display. Oddly enough, I have a certain system for viewing the fair. After parking the car, I insist that we go into the two buildings that house the quilts, and all the other handmade items. It also includes the cornucopia of fruits and veggies, including the funniest category the Vegetable Freak. See the picture above and you will understand. The 4-H building is always fun and I am always impressed by what the area youth are creating. I often wonder if these kids will continue creating and what they ve learned in 4-H becomes a lifelong hobby. I hope so. Then we go see the artwork and head on up to the cow barn. I love the cows and love seeing the kids lovingly care for their charges. I don t think that a year has gone by since we moved into Bucks that there isn t a newspaper picture of a young boy sleeping with his cows. To me, it s what the fair is all about. I always take a couple chances on the calf, wondering what I would do if I happened to win. I guess we d have a new pet for our backyard! Somehow I think that Ron wouldn t be overjoyed. After viewing the cows, we head into the sheep and pig barn and laugh at the sheep in their jackets and the pigs snuffling around in the dirt. They are such funny creatures. Then we view the tractors and small motor man, and head into the tents with a variety of vendors. Years ago, my son John had a booth there right next to the pig races. He said that he still has nightmares (I think he exaggerates)! We walk over to the amusements and listen to the kids screaming and watch the teenagers watching each other. We may stop for kettle corn or root beer and then head home to start thinking of what we might enter in next year s fair. And even though the traffic backs up down my street and I hear the screams of amusement riders into the night, I wouldn t change the Middletown Grange Fair for anything. It s definitely the Best of Bucks! Jackie Kaizar For Sale: Bernina 580 with embroidery. Less than two years old, less than 450,000 total stitches. $3, or make me an offer.
