1 2016 Issue #5 NQA #604 May 2016 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: I usually try to direct this little epistle to recap what we've been blessed to hear from our speakers, or to exhort our members to participate in some of the great projects that we work on at guild, whether it be for Camp Erin, our quilt show or our challenges. My aim has been to encourage you to try some of the new techniques presented by our speakers or become involved in some outreach within the guild, both to make more quilts and to hopefully make more friends. The potential for creative inspiration we get from each other is huge! I hope you don t feel that these small writings are just some fluff to fill a few lines in the newsletter, but see them as my attempt to make a connection with you, the members, and give this guild some purpose in your life. For me, this guild is not just another meeting, but something I look forward to every month so I can reconnect with my friends. I encourage all of you to reach out to our new members and make them feel welcome also. Diana Leslie GUILD MEETING Tuesday, May 17 at 7:30 pm, The Birches, Newtown, PA On May 17, we will have Linda Poole provide a lecture on art quilting and painting on fabric and earlier in the day (from 10:00 4:00), we will have a workshop on Paint, Doodle, Stitch! Check out her website for more detail: We still have room in her workshop which is $40 for the day and includes a catered lunch. There is an additional $35 kit fee. This kit eliminates you having to buy supplies that you may not continue to use but we think you will use them all up again and again. This looks like great fun! You do not need to be a member to participate. Call Linda at to sign up. Coming up: June guild meeting will be 1 week early on June 14, 2016 In June, we will be hosting Pat Sloan, a nationally recognized speaker. She will lecture at our June Meeting which will be held a week early due to scheduling issues at our meeting space. So Tuesday, June 14, meet Pat Sloan. We welcome all visitors for $5. On Wednesday June 15, we will hold a workshop at Addisville Church in Richboro from 10:00 4:00 with Pat on making an interesting background for your applique quilts. Betsy and Linda went to see Pat at Keystone Quilters two years ago and she is such a fun lady. You are sure to learn something new and have a blast doing so! Please contact me if you have not paid your workshop! We have a wait list.. I want to thank the quilters of NQG who participated in Fabric Frenzy quilt show at Capital Health. It was an amazing success. We are sure to be invited again. 2 The Newtown Quilters Guild May 2016 Page 2 PHILANTHROPY: It was delightful and amazing to see over 30 large quilts that were presented to Donna Laing for Camp Erin at the April NQG meeting! The wonderful variety in quilt patterns and joyful colors had everyone oohing and aahing over these quilts, each a unique creation involving many hands to put them all together. Of course, Donna was thrilled to now have enough quilts for the 110 children that will be coming to the camp in Horsham this year. Best of all, there were plenty of boy quilts as well as unisex quilts, so that there will be no problem in providing a special quilt for each child, whether boy or girl, short or tall! Many thanks to all who were involved in helping to make this happen! Now let's focus this coming month on making some smaller, crib-sized quilts for Quilts for Kids. There will be a meeting of the philanthropy committee on the second Tuesday of the month, which is Tuesday, May 10th, at Quilts for Kids, 494 Lincoln Highway, Fairless Hills, PA 19030, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your sewing machine and some neutral thread, and join us for a fun day of sewing. Kits for crib-sized quilts will be provided to you to work on. Sallie Lloyd NEWSLETTER: Christa Froehlich is the new editor of the newsletter. MAY 2016 BLOCK OF THE MONTH: Triple Flying Geese Directions for the block can be found on our website: QUILT CHALLENGE: Are you going around in circles yet??? We hope that you are enjoying the journey of making your challenge quilt. As you interpret the circle theme, please keep the maximum size of your quilt to 96 in perimeter or 24 in diameter due to display limitations at our meeting venue. Your quilt can feature appliqué, pieced blocks, paint, thread work, or a combination of these techniques. Your interpretation can be realistic or abstract. Why not step out of your comfort zone to produce a quilt that will get you to try a new technique or pattern, or design your own quilt. Whatever you choose, enjoy the creative process. Remember, this year s challenge will not be a competition so, no excuses! Everyone wins in this challenge: it s all about doing what we love and sharing our work with our friends. 3 The Newtown Quilters Guild May 2016 Page 3 MINUTES of the Newtown Quilters Guild Meeting on April 19, 2016 At tonight s meeting, Suzi Parron did her presentation of Barn Quilts. Suzi has two books published on this very interesting tour. The next meeting we will have Linda Poole provide a lecture on art quilting and painting on fabric. It will be held on Tuesday, May 17, at 7:30pm at The Birches, at 70 Durham Road, Newtown, PA Guests are welcome at a $5.00 charge. President (Diana Leslie): Thanks to Karen Lloyd and Sallie for all the work put into purchase/set-up of sound system. Some difficulty faced tonight; hoping just the batteries in hand speaker. Library (Christa Froehlich) Christa requested funds to purchase the book of the speaker this evening. Diana said that funds were available. New Business: No new business at this time. Raelaine, along with her daughter Karen, was a co-chair of this year's raffle quilt. Our thoughts and prayers are with Karen and her family. Raelaine Swanner was an extremely talented quilter. Many of you will remember this beautiful quilt of hers from our last quilt show.

5 The Newtown Quilters Guild May 2016 Page 5 LOOKING AHEAD: Saturday May 21 from 10 to 4. Pennington Day Quilt Show Hopewell Valley Quilters are planning their annual Pennington Day show to be held on May 21st from 10 am to 4 pm in the Toll Gate Grammar School cafeteria. The quilts on display are made by members and reflect a great variety of styles, from beautiful traditional patterns to contemporary works of fiber art. This year s show will include two special exhibits taking circles as the theme. The Quilters challenged themselves to make small quilts that incorporate this theme in creative and diverse ways. Also on display will be antique quilts and quilt blocks featuring circle designs. Viewers will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite quilt in the show. The Viewers Choice Prize has been donated by Pennington Quiltworks. Admission to the show is only $1.00, and proceeds benefit Pennington Day Hopewell Valley Quilters is an informal group that has been meeting for over 30 years. The group meets both in the daytime and in the evening in the Hopewell Township branch of Mercer County Library. All are welcome. More information about the quilt group will be available at the show. Toll Gate Grammar School is located on the corner of S. Main Street and E. Curlis Avenue. Entry to the show is on the north side of the school building.
