A pocket on the front holds embroidery scissors and other small notions. Kimber Mitchell Van Heukelom is a quilt book editor and designer. Inspired by a love of history, she designs doll quilts and papier mâché dolls reminiscent of yesteryear. She lives in an 1885 Victorian home in Iowa with her husband, Tom. Size: 6" 8" Materials 1 fat quarter* green felted wool or wool felt for owl body 5" square pink solid felted wool 4" square each of tan herringbone and brown felted wool 7" square of pink herrringbone wool 3¼" 5½" rectangle green print for pocket lining 4" 10" rectangle muslin for sandbag 4" 5" rectangle thick cardboard Template material 2 (¾"-diameter) buttons Green, pink, and brown pearl cotton Fabric glue Polyester fiberfill Fine sand *fat quarter = 18" 20" 4 Fons k Porter s 10 Gift Ideas
5 Cutting Measurements include ¼" seam allowances. Patterns are on page 6. From green wool, cut: 2 (8" 9") rectangles. 1 Oval Base. 9 Pocket Circles. From pink solid wool, cut: 2 Outer Eyes (cut with pinking or scallop shears). From tan herringbone wool, cut: 2 Inner Eyes. From brown wool, cut: 1 Beak. 8 Pocket Circles. From pink herringbone wool, cut: 2 Wings. 8 Pocket Circles. From muslin, cut: 2 (4" 5") rectangles. From cardboard, cut: 1 Base. Pocket 1. Place green print rectangle wrong side up. Apply fabric glue to wrong side of wool pocket circles; layer circles in 6 rows as shown in Pocket Unit Diagrams, starting with bottom row. Circles will overlap by about half their diameter. Allow glue to dry. Pocket Unit Diagrams Pocket Unit Diagrams 2. Position pocket template atop Pocket Unit. Trace around template; cut just inside traced line so line won t show on finished project (Pocket Cutting Diagrams). Pocket Cutting Diagrams Owl Body 1. Trace around owl body pattern on green wool rectangle. Cut out shape. Baste wings to right side of owl shape at marks indicated on pattern. 2. Place owl shape atop remaining green wool rectangle, right sides facing. Pin layers together. Sew around owl, leaving bottom open and backstitching at beginning and end of seam. Trim rectangle even with edge of owl shape. Turn right side out. Owl Assembly 1. Stuff owl firmly with polyester fiberfill, leaving about ¾" of space at bottom. 2. Trace sandbag pattern on 1 muslin rectangle. Place marked rectangle atop remaining muslin rectangle; stitch on marked line, leaving a 1" opening for turning. Cut out oval, leaving a ¼" seam allowance. Turn right side out. 3. Fill sandbag with fine sand; whipstitch opening closed. Sew Smart TM Use a funnel to easily fill sandbag. Marianne 4. Insert sandbag into owl body. Insert cardboard oval into base of owl. 5. Using green pearl cotton, sew a running stitch ¼" from bottom edge of owl; pull ends of pearl cotton to gather wool around cardboard base. Secure ends. 6. Place green wool oval atop base of owl; pin in place. Whipstitch oval to base of pincushion, gently manipulating oval to cover gathering stitches as you go. Finishing 1. Use blanket stitch for all appliqué unless otherwise noted. Appliqué wings to front of owl. 2. Position pocket on front of owl. Appliqué around pocket, stitching sides and bottom to owl front and stitching only through pocket along top. 3. Appliqué 1 Inner Eye to 1 Outer Eye using brown pearl cotton. Add button to complete 1 eye. Make 2 eyes. 4. Appliqué eyes in place using pink pearl cotton and running stitch. 5. Appliqué beak using pink pearl cotton. Fons k Porter s 10 Gift Ideas 5
