2 materials To make one finished 16 x 16 block/mini quilt. Multiply material quantities to make additional blocks. Make additional blocks to construct a larger quilt layout ideas on page 9. Fabric for quilt top Background Fabric 3/4 yd Spools approx 10 x 10 Thread 10 pieces in a variety of solids approx. 3 x 4 in size pick your favorite Aurifil thread colors or use what I selected (see below) If you need additional fabric to complement your stash, charm packs are great for this project. Additional materials Backing Fabric 18" x 22" (a fat quarter is perfect) Binding Fabric 1/6 yd (need 5 x 42 ) based on cutting 2¼ strips on the cross-grain (selvage-to-selvage) and then double-folding Batting 18 x 18 Other special tools paper scissors or rotary cutter (to cut out templates) optional Water-Soluble Fabric Glue Stick optional CottageCutz Add-a-Quarter Ruler (6 or larger) optional Wallpaper Seam Roller or Bone Folder This pattern requires foundation paper piecing techniques. General foundation paper piecing knowledge is assumed. I used the following materials: THREAD for piecing (Aurifil 50wt): 2024 (white) THREAD for quilting (all Aurifil 80wt): 2250, 1154, 1135, 1147, 2870, 1148, 2810, 2725, 2520, 2479, 2024 FABRIC (all Kona Cotton from Robert Kaufman): White (quilt front background) Red, Tangerine, Corn Yellow, Lime, Grasshopper, Breakers, Lagoon, Blue Jay, Crocus, Blush Pink (thread background) Tangerine (spools background and binding matches iconic 50wt spool color) Water (quilt back matches Aurifil logo/identity blue) BATTING Warm & Natural by The Warm Company connect with me & check out my other patterns Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill instagram.com/wholecirclestudio facebook.com/wholecirclestudio 2017 whole circle studio All rights reserved. I designed the original Sew Many Colors mini quilt as a donation to the Quilt Alliance annual fundraiser in early The original design contained 12 spools. This updated version contains 10 spools, at actual size, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Aurifil USA in Many thanks to the following talented quilters for testing this pattern: Wendy Bermingham (@wendybzquilting ) Alex Fox (@a.fox.made.this) Joanne Harris (@turtlequilterjo) Tiffany Horn (@villageboundquilts) Sharon Litvinoff Laura McDowell Hopper (@sonicstitches) Rebecca Makas (@restitcherator) Jenny Nault Meeker (@jennynaultmeeker) 3
4 directions All seams are ¼. Backstitch at the beginning and end of every seam. preparation 1. Print TWO copies of pages (Pattern Pages 1-3) at 100% or Actual Size on basic copy paper. After printing, measure the 1 test box on each page to confirm it is exactly one inch. Cut out each piece on the outer, thinner lines a dedicated paper rotary cutter is perfect for this. You will have a total of 20 paper pieces. 2. Print the Sew Many Colors Coloring Sheet on page 8. Play with color placement either by using colored pencils or arranging fabric swatches. getting organized 3. Organize paper pieces according to Diagram 1 on page 5 and have your Coloring Sheet on page 8 handy to refer to. Remember that the orientation of the paper pieces will be from the back and the Coloring Sheet will be in reverse (from the front). TIP: The spool and thread sections are shaded in gray on the paper patterns. The background sections are unshaded. making the quilt top 4. Foundation piece all 20 paper pieces. Sew each of the paper pieces numerically. As an example, for the piece that has A1-1/A1-2/A1-3/A1-4, start by covering A1-1 and then sew on A1-2. Once all of the pieces have been sewn, trim the overall fabric at outer edge of paper. PAPER PIECING TIPS: I typically cut fabric pieces about ¾ larger than the shape I m covering. Depending on your skills, you may use less fabric. If you are new to paper piecing, you may want to cut your fabric pieces larger. Use a water-soluble fabric glue stick to attach the first section in each piece, especially when the first section is small. For example, glue fabric to section A2-1 (the small orange fabric piece used for the top of the spool). Reduce your stitch length to 1.5. This shortened stitch length will make it easier to remove the paper at the end. I like to match my thread to one of the colors of the fabrics that I am sewing together, especially for seams that are pressed open. After adding each piece, trim seam allowance (the optional Add a Quarter ruler is handy for this) and press seams before adding the next piece. Before pressing with a hot iron on the fabric side, I use a wallpaper seam roller or bone folder (see optional special tools) to press the seam on the paper side. Be prepared to use your seam ripper! Even the most experienced paper piecers will need it at times. 4

Sew the following as indicated by the arrows in the diagram: B1 to B2 D1 to D2 C1 to C2 E1 to E2 Press seams open. 9. Repeat Step 8 for the second set of B, C, D and E pieces. 7 At this point, make sure your pieces are organized as shown in Diagram 1 with the colors where you want them before proceeding. Remember that the orientation of the paper pieces will be from the back (reverse of how they are shown in your Coloring Sheet). Diagrams will continue to be shown from the back (paper side). 10. Sew a B part to a C part as shown in Diagram 5. Press seam open. B Diagram 5 C E Diagram 6 D 11. Sew a D part to an E part as shown in Diagram 6. Press seam open. 12. Repeat Steps for the second set of B, C, D and E pieces. 13. Remove all foundation paper from all parts. Be patient. A pair of tweezers makes it easier to get to the smaller pieces of paper. Once all of the paper is removed, give the parts another good press. You re now done with the foundation paper piecing portion of this pattern, so change your stitch length to what you normally use to piece. I recommend between 2.0 and 2.5. Also, check to see if you need to change your needle. Sewing through paper will dull it. 14. Sew a B/C part to a D/E part as shown in Diagram 7. Press seam open. 15. Repeat Step 14 for the second set of B/C and D/E parts. B/C D/E 16. Arrange the A part and B/C/D/E parts as shown in Diagram 8. Sew together. Press seam open. Make additional Sew Many Colors to make a larger quilt. See page 9 for some ideas or design your own layout. Diagram 7 finishing it up 17. Quilt as desired. I free motion quilted the thread portions using the cross wound pattern found on the actual Aurifil spools as inspiration. 18. Trim to 16 x From the binding fabric, cut 2 strips of 2¼ x width of fabric (approx. 42 ). Join with diagonal seams to create a binding strip. Fold the strip in half lengthwise and bind the quilt using the double-fold binding method. B/C/D/E A B/C/D/E Diagram 8 7
