2 QUILT STATS: GOING UP! Finished Quilt: 58.5 x 58.5 Finished Block: 7 x 9.5 MATERIALS: x 10 squares 2 ½ yards Solid Fabric 3 ¾ yards Print Fabric {backing} ½ yard Print Fabric {binding} Bamboo/Cotton Batting {at least 65 x 65 } Alternatively, cut your pieces from Fat Eighths or Fat Quarters from your stash! Please read all instructions before attempting pattern. Quantities are for assumed 42 wide, 100% cotton fabrics. Measurements include ¼ seam allowances. ¼ seams are used throughout unless otherwise stated. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated. CUTTING: {step 1} Take your fabric and cut as follows: from each of the 35 10 Squares, cut: {diagram a} 2x 3 ¾ x 10 rectangles {A} from Solid Fabric, cut: 15x 3 ¾ x WOF strips subcut these into: 140x

along selvedge edges. Press. PREPARING: {step 2} Using a fabric marker or pencil and ruler, mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of: - all 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ squares {B} {See {diagram b}.

3 CUTTING: {step 1} Take your fabric and cut as follows: from each of the Squares, cut: {diagram a} 2x 3 ¾ x 10 rectangles {A} from Solid Fabric, cut: 15x 3 ¾ x WOF strips subcut these into: 140x 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ squares {B} 5x 4 ½ x WOF strips from selected {Binding} Print Fabric, cut: 6 each 2 ½ WOF strips {diagram a} *not to scale* from Print {Backing} Fabric, cut into TWO equal lengths and join along selvedge edges. Press. PREPARING: {step 2} Using a fabric marker or pencil and ruler, mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of: - all 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ squares {B} {See {diagram b}. STITCHING: {diagram b} {step 3} You make Easy Corner Triangles {ECTs} units by matching a 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ square {B} with the corners of your cut rectangle pieces and sewing along the marked line {diagram c}. Each block uses both Right and Left ECT units for each of the rectangle pieces, as follows: Cut ¼ on the outside of the sewn line on each piece. {diagram c} Page 2

{diagram d} Repeat steps with another 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ square {B}, this time aligning with the bottom edge of the same rectangle piece.

4 Left ECT Units: Match one 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ square {B} with the top edge of a print 3 ¾ x 10 rectangle {A} aligning the marked line towards the right. Sew along marked line. Cut ¼ on the outside of your marked/sewn line to trim piece for pressing. Press seams towards the solid fabric {diagram d}. {diagram d} Repeat steps with another 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ square {B}, this time aligning with the bottom edge of the same rectangle piece. Sew along the marked line and cut ¼ on the outside of your seam. Press seams towards the solid fabric. You now have a Left ECT unit, and one half of your arrow block {diagram e}. {diagram e} Page 3

Right ECT Units: To create the Right ECT units, and the other half of your arrow blocks, match one 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ square {B} with the top edge of a matching print 3 ¾ x 10 rectangle

Press seams towards the solid fabric {diagram f}. {diagram f} Repeat steps with another 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ square {B}, this time aligning with the bottom edge of the same rectangle piece.

You now have a Right ECT unit, and the remaining half of your arrow block {diagram g}.

5 Right ECT Units: To create the Right ECT units, and the other half of your arrow blocks, match one 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ square {B} with the top edge of a matching print 3 ¾ x 10 rectangle {A} aligning the marked line towards the left. Sew along marked line. Cut ¼ on the outside of your marked/sewn line to trim piece for pressing. Press seams towards the solid fabric {diagram f}. {diagram f} Repeat steps with another 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ square {B}, this time aligning with the bottom edge of the same rectangle piece. Sew along the marked line and cut ¼ on the outside of your seam. Press seams towards the solid fabric. You now have a Right ECT unit, and the remaining half of your arrow block {diagram g}. {diagram g} {Step 4} Repeat steps for ALL rectangle pieces to make 35 right and 35 left unit pieces for each block. You will have 2 left and 2 right ECT units in each fabric print. Mark each set as listed below in preparation for piecing: PIECING: {step 5} To assemble each block you will need {matching prints}: {diagram h} 1x Left ECT Unit 1x Right ECT Unit {diagram h} Page 4

{step 6} Taking one left and one right ECT Piece in each print, join on long edge as follows, to create your completed arrow block {diagram i} {diagram i} Repeat for ALL left and right ECT Pieces in

You will now have 6 half blocks {three tops, and three bottoms}. These half blocks {the top and bottom halves of your arrows} will form the half-drop blocks in the next steps.

6 {step 6} Taking one left and one right ECT Piece in each print, join on long edge as follows, to create your completed arrow block {diagram i} {diagram i} Repeat for ALL left and right ECT Pieces in each print {35 in total for quilt}. {step 7} Take three blocks and set others aside. Measuring 5 along the long edge, cut your block in half {diagram j}. You will now have 6 half blocks {three tops, and three bottoms}. These half blocks {the top and bottom halves of your arrows} will form the half-drop blocks in the next steps. FINISHING: {diagram j} {step 8} {step 9} Lay blocks out, referring to layout diagram {first page}. Note - refer to this diagram for following steps. Assemble quilt top in columns: Column 1, 3, 5, and 7 consist of 5 full arrow blocks in each. Join each full block together to yield your block strips {diagram k} Page 5

7 {diagram k} Column 2, 4 and 6 consist of 4 full arrow blocks, and two half blocks {one arrow top at the very top of your column, and an arrow bottom as the last block} in each. Join each half and full block together to yield your alternate block strips {diagram l} {diagram l} Page 6

8 QUILTING: Join your columns together to yield a 5 x 7 block quilt top. Press seams in alternate directions for each column. {step 10} Layer quilt top, batting and backing fabric {with seams on the horizontal} and baste with preferred method. Quilt as desired. Trim excess or square up quilt top before binding. BINDING: {step 11} {step 12} {step 13} Sew 2 ½ binding strips together end to end to form one long strip. Press seams open. Press strip in half with wrong sides together. Using a quarter inch {¼ } seam sew your binding strips to the front of your basted and quilted top, aligning raw edges together. Start on one side leaving a beginning tail of about 6-10 inches. Sew along until you reach ¼ from the corner. Raise presser foot and, without breaking thread, turn your quilt top. Lift strip straight up and then bring back down to align raw edges again {diagram m}. Continue sewing your binding strips and repeat for the next three corners. {stitch until ¼ from corner } {lift strip up, and then down to align raw edges, continue sewing in place from corner } {quilt back } {step 14} {step 15} {step 16} {diagram m} When you reach the beginning of your binding, stop sewing and match and trim the two tails of binding strip, so it will sit neatly along the quilt edge. Unfold your strips and with right sides together, sew your two tails together with a ¼ seam {you may need to wrangle your quilt a bit to do this!}. Re-fold sewn strip and lay flat against side of your quilt and sew in place. Turn binding strip to back-side of your quilt and hand-sew in place. Take the time to check your trimmed binding piece and make adjustments to ensure it isn t pulling * in the case of machine binding complete all above steps, however sewing the binding strip to the BACK of the quilt in step 12, and turning to the front of the quilt, and machine stitching in step 16.
