2 Summertime Squares A QuiltSoup Pattern v All rights reserved 50" x 63" quilt We designed this quilt with confident beginners in mind. The appliqué is simple and minimal. The piecing is straight forward so I am thinking it doesn t get much easier than this! There are two different blocks in this quilt a nine patch and a flower block. The blocks are separated by sashings, alternated and then sewn into rows. The rows are separated by sashing and sewn together to make the quilt center. The inner and outer borders are added to finish the quilt top. Please read all instructions before you begin and check our website for any pattern updates. General Notes: Width of fabric means from selvage to selvage and is abbreviated wof. Arrows indicate the direction to press seam allowances. Cut border pieces to lengths given after you measure your quilt center. Measure horizontally through the center of your quilt to get the width and vertically to get the length of your quilt center. Cutting: For best use of fabric, cut the largest pieces first. Red Floral SKU NOTE: Cut these pieces from LENGTH of goods to get borders that don t need to be matched and pieced. Cut 1 5 x 51 1/2 for right hand side border Cut 1 6 1/2 x 50 1/2 for bottom border Cut 4 2 3/4 x length of strips for nine patch blocks. Use these in strip sets and cut to length as you go (approx 42 ). Red Squares SKU NOTE: Cut these pieces from LENGTH of goods to get borders that don t need to be matched and pieced. We recommend using the remainder on the back of the quilt. Cut 1 5 x 51 1/2 for left hand side border Cut 1 6 1/2 x 50 1/2 for top border Red Texture SKU Cut 2 5 x wof strips for nine patch blocks Cut 2 5 x wof strips. From these cut 12 5 squares for flower blocks. Set the remainder aside for binding. Binding requires approximately 250 inches or about 6 2 1/4 straight grain strips. If you prefer, you may cut the strips on the diagonal for a bias binding; you will just have more seams. Blue Squares SKU Cut 1 5 x wof strip. From this, cut 8 5 squares for flower blocks Mark and cut 2 circles for flower centers. 2

3 Green Squares SKU Cut 1 5 x wof strip. From this, cut 8 5 squares for flower blocks Peach Mini Dot SKU Cut 1 5 x wof strip. From this, cut 4 5 squares for flower blocks Black Baskets SKU Cut 1 5 x wof strip. From this, cut 8 5 squares for flower blocks Mark and cut 8 circles for flower centers Multi-Colored Stripe SKU Cut 2-5 x wof strips for nine patch blocks Cut 4 2 3/4 x wof strips for nine patch blocks Multi-Colored Dot SKU Cut 1-9 1/2 x wof strip. From this, cut /2 x 9 1/2 for vertical sashes Cut 6 1 1/2 x wof strips. Cut these strips to 1 1/2 x 39 1/2 for horizontal sashes. Cut 3-1 1/2 x wof strips from the same place in the pattern on the fabric. We are matching the dots and sewing strips into one continuous strip to make the outside vertical long sashes. Cut 1 2 x wof strip. From this cut 40 2 squares for flower blocks. Black Texture SKU Cut 4 1 1/2 squares for corner posts on inner border. If you think the black basket flower centers look like too much, we suggest cutting some of them from this fabric. The flower centers are 3 circles (finished) so you will be able to get them from this cut of fabric. Nine Patch Blocks: Make Make the following strip sets and press as indicated by arrows. a. Sew 5 multi-colored stripe between two 2 3/4 x wof red floral strips. Make 2 sets. Press to red floral. Cut /4 segments from strip sets for top and bottom of block. b. Sew 5 red texture strip between two 2 3/4 multi-colored stripe strips. Make 2 sets. Press to red texture. Cut 10 5 segments from strip sets for middle of block. 3

4 c. Sew segments together as shown and press seams toward center of block. Flower Blocks: Make 10 Make 3 red texture, 2 green squares, 2 blue squares, 2 black baskets, 1 peach mini dot. The instructions to make one block follow: 1. Mark a diagonal line lightly in pencil on the back of 40 2 multi colored dot squares. 2. Place a marked 2 square over the upper right hand corner of one 5 colored flower square, right sides together. Sew on the marked line. Trim excess fabric to leave a 1/4 seam allowance. Open fabric up and press toward the corner. Sew a corner triangle on each of 4-5 squares to make one block. Sew into pairs and press as shown. Sew pairs into a block and press open. Applique 3 marked circle over the center of the block. Quilt Assembly: Rows 1, 3, 5 are made the same way. Sew blocks and multicolor dot sashes into rows as shown. Press to sashes. Row 1 Row 3 Row 5 4

5 Rows 2 and 4: Sew blocks and sashes into rows 2 and 4 as shown. Press to sashes. Row 2 Row 4 Sashing: Sew a 1 1/2 x 39 1/2 sash to top of all rows and to the bottom of row 5. Press to sashes. Sew rows together and press to sashes. 5

6 Sashing (cont): Remove selvage ends from three multi-color dot 1 1/2 x wof strips. Sew strips end to end to make one continuous strip. Press seams open. From this, cut 2 1 1/2 x 49 1/2 strips. Sew black texture 1 1/2 square to both ends of sashing strips. Press to sashes. Sew to sides of quilt center as shown in diagram. Outer border: 1. Sew red floral 5 x 51 1/2 strip to right hand side of quilt. Press away from center. 2. Sew red squares 5 x 51 1/2 strip to left hand side of quilt. Press away from center. 3. Sew red floral 6 1/2 x 50 1/2 strip to bottom of quilt. Press to red. 4. Sew red squares 6 1/2 x 50 1/2 strip to top of quilt. Press to red. Quilt, bind and pat yourself on the back!
