1 1 may block #3 modern BOM 2 Hour By Hour // May Block #3 Welcome to May! This month we will be making the Hour by Hour Quilt Block for Modern BOM 2. Before we begin, here are the tools you will need. created by Alyssa Lichner for Sew, Mama, Sew! TOOL LIST 6.5 X 24 Ruler Rotary Cutter and Rotary Mat Heavy Starch and Iron ( I use Best Press Starch) Sewing Pins Elmer s Washable School Glue (optional) Matching Thread (I use Aurifil 50wt) Block Yardage Requirements (1) 6.5 x WOF strip of each of Fabrics A, B, C, D (1/2 yard) BG Background Fabric

2 2 Block Cutting Instructions Print the quarter circle templates out at 100% scale on your home printer. When printed one straight side of the inner curve should measure 6.5. Optionally you can trace the template on heavy template plastic to create reusable templates. Heavily starch and press the inner curve fabrics, and mildly starch the outer curve fabric. The inner curves should be fairly stiff and the outer curves should be a bit more flexible. Fabric A: Kona Khaki Cut (1) 6.5 x WOF Fabric C: Kona Curry Cut (1) 6.5 x WOF Sub-cut strip into (6) 6.5 x 6.5 squares Sub-cut squares into (6) inner curves Fabric D: Kona Snow Cut (1) 6.5 x WOF Sub-cut strip into (3) 6.5 x 6.5 squares Sub-cut squares into (3) inner curves Fabric BG: Kona Charcoal Cut (2) 6.5 x WOF Sub-cut strip into (3) 6.5 x 6.5 squares Sub-cut into (8) 6.5 x 7.5 blocks Sub-cut squares into (3) inner curves Fabric B: Kona Azure Cut (1) 6.5 x WOF Cut (2) outer curves from each 6.5 x 7.5 block until you have a total of (18) outer curves Sub-cut strip into (4) 6.5 x 6.5 squares Sub-cut squares into (4) inner curves

3 3 Hour by Hour // Block Instructions There are three different techniques for you to choose from when piecing your curves. TECHNIQUE #1 // USING PINS STEP 1 Fold the inner circle in half pressing down the center in order to leave a mark. Repeat for the outer curve piece. STEP 3 Pull one end of the outer curve piece down and line the edge up with the edge of the inner curve and pin. STEP 2 Lay the two piece right sides together (the outer curve will look very awkward at this point). Line up the center marks and pin the two pieces together. STEP 4 Repeat step 3 for the other end of the outer curve piece. You should have 3 pins in place on the ends and center.

4 4 STEP 5 Working from the center pin out line up the edges up and continue pinning. Don t be afraid to be pin happy! STEP 6 Slowly stitch the two pieces together using a scant 1/4 seam. STEP 7 Take the pins out as you sew. STEP 8 Press your inner curve seam toward the outer curve piece.

5 5 TECHNIQUE #2 // USING GLUE STEP 1 Fold the inner circle in half pressing down the center in order to leave a mark. Repeat for the outer curve piece. Place a small dot of glue within the seam allowance on the inner curve center mark. STEP 3 You should have 3 places temporarily glued, with no pins! STEP 2 Lay the two piece right sides together (the outer curve will look very awkward at this point). Line up the center marks and press the two pieces together with a hot dry iron heat setting the glue. Repeat this method for both edges. STEP 4 Stitch together the pieces using a scant 1/4 seam lining up the outer curve with the inner curve edge as you sew.

6 6 TECHNIQUE #3 // No Pins, No Glue, Free hand! STEP 1 Lay the inner curve piece right side up on your left with the curve facing to the right. Lay the outer curve piece right side down positioned like an L. Line up the top edges and begin to sew with a scant 1/4 seam. STEP 2 With your left hand guide the inner curve piece, and with your right guide the outer curve piece. Line up the edges of the two pieces with the edge of the presser foot as your sew. Go SLOW. FOR ALL TECHNIQUES STEP 3 & 4 Press the inner curve seam toward the outer curve. Carefully trim your blocks to 6.5. It helps if you line the 45 degree angle mark on your ruler with the half fold line on your block from previous steps. It is important that the ends of your outer curve pieces measure out to 1/2 wide when trimmed (figure 3).

7 7 Piecing the Curve Blocks STEP 1 Layout your pieces. Piece together two quarter circles then piece together the half circles. Repeat this for all 4 circles. + + *NOTE - Make sure you line up the outer curve edges perfectly and pin in place while you sew. + STEP 2 Piece two whole circles together making sure to line up the halfway seams. + Repeat for the other two whole circles. Then piece the final two segments together lining up the center seams. +
