1 Manatee Patchworkers Next Meeting: Nov 1, 2010 President s Corner November will be our last meeting at the Knights of Columbus Hall. We have had a good, long time at this meeting place. Starting in December we will be meeting at the Main Library in Bradenton and we will be celebrating with our Holiday Party. For all of 2011 we have booked the Library and have been welcomed nicely. The only snag we have with this location is that we must end all meetings by 8:45pm and be clear of the building by 9:00pm. This is a must and there is no leeway. Therefore, we will be starting our meetings earlier at 6:30pm; social time and snacks starting at 6:00pm. I know this will be a little tight for some of our working members but to get all our good stuff done within the time frame it has to be. Our July and September meetings will have some adjustments and we will let you know about this when it is closer to those times. You will find some more information on this new meeting place elsewhere in this newsletter. Our community service is moving along and we have quite a few quilts to distribute to the law enforcements. We will be setting up a meeting in the near future. Victoria and Hilary and their committee are making complete kits to distribute at each of our monthly meetings. Be sure you pick up one, complete it and return it at the next meeting. Also, in this newsletter is more specific information on these quilts if you want to make one on your own. They are such great fun to make in a day or two when you need a good fabric fix. Try it. I want to thank Posy and the In Stitches cottage group for taking on our Christmas party. They will have sign up sheets at our November meeting. Seek these out and make sure you get on the list to be there and what you will be bringing. I continue to enjoy being your President and look forward to being part of all the good things this Guild does. Bobbie It is hard to believe, but another year is quickly passing. We are, therefore, asking you to begin making dues payments prior to the January renewal date. Collection at our meeting, especially in a new location, will be very time consuming and could delay our meeting. Our December meeting is a no business meeting. So, please, if you are able, dues may be paid at the November meeting or sent via US Mail to Denise Pendleton, PO Box 20927, Bradenton, FL Please make your check payable to Manatee Patchworkers in the amount of $ This will be our last meeting at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Beginning with our December Holiday Party, we will be meeting at the Manatee County Central Library, 1301 Barcarrota Boulevard West, in Bradenton (941) The auditorium is on the ground floor via the 2nd Ave W. entrance; the waterfront or Barcarrota entrance has stairway access. Meetings will begin at 6:30pm and close by 8:45pm so that we are out of the building before the 9:00pm closing. Social 6:00-6:30pm. We meet the 1st Monday of each month and beginning with our January 2011meeting, we will be at the Manatee County Public Library, 1301 Barcarrota Blvd. West, Bradenton, FL Snack & Social, 6:00 pm - Meeting Begins: 6:30 pm

2 2 Manatee Patchworkers October general meeting was called to order at 7pm by President Bobbie Spann. Bobbie informed the group that November would be the last meeting to be held at the Knights of Columbus. Effective with the Christmas party, the Patchworkers will meet at the Manatee County Library s main branch downtown. The start time will need to move up to 6:30p as we need to be finished and out by 9p.The cost is perfect No Charge! The group will plan to make and donate a quilt to the Library in the future. December 6 is the first Monday in December and, therefore, the night for the Guild Christmas Party. It will be held at the Library. The In Stitches cottage group has volunteers to coordinate the event. Randy Carman, Vice President, talked about upcoming classes: -10/16 Fun with Fabric by Robin Adorna, to be held at Gulf Lakes at 10am. Cost: $20. Each participant will work with fabric dying, discharging and batiking. In January (date to be announced) Donna Koenig, will present a purse workshop, specifically, Deli Tote. Randy asked for volunteers to serve with her on a Program Committee. Motion to approve the minutes as printed in the newsletter. Motion was made by Rose Ryan and seconded by Marty Berles. Treasurer Denise Pendleton presented the Guild financial Report for September. Lyn Garland, Membership, announced that Aunt Laura has lost her tote bag and needs to claim it. Lyn will check the membership list for all Laura s and Robin will put a notice in the newsletter. There were 3 guests in attendance along with 56 members. The Guild has a total of 109 members. Robin Adorna won the door prize. Sherry Ebey had a death in the family. New member name tags are on order. Lyn asked that everyone think back: someone picked up the name tag for Lynette Goodwin but has not yet delivered it to her. Librarian Carol Masulonis highlighted a purse book. Jill Voyles, Opportunity Quilt Chair, discussed the fabrics and showed samples of block pieces. Community Service Co-Chair Hilary Macdonald announced upcoming Quilt Dates: Oct. 12, Oct. 26 and Nov. 9. The workshops are held at MTI campus, Quilting Trailer on 57th between 34th and 26th Streets, from 10a until 2p in the Quilt & Sewing Lab. Kits are being put together for the convenience of members. If you are sewing on your own, Community Service quilts should be made 40 x 50. Quilts for Cruisers: Suggestions were made for additional outlets for Quilts for Cruisers. Florida Highway Patron, beach police departments, Red Cross. We both have and need fabric. Twelve quilts have been pulled to be sold at the Historic Village Christmas event at the Manatee County Historical Park. Another possibility for sale would be dog pallets. Save old pillows! Sandi Routhier, immediate past president, presented a $500 check from Wachovia Bank. Sandi is employed by Wachovia, which honors employee community service activities. The $500 is to be used for community service. Fat Quarters, coordinated by Alice Sheetz this month were won by Mary Nissin (2), Nancy Salsfishpaw and June Owens. Next month, the theme will be Sewing Items and will be again coordinated by Alice Sheetz. The program, coined Traveling Quilters was given by members who had recently traveled in the name of quilting. Denise Pendleton, traveled to France for a quilt retreat and described it as a trip of a lifetime. Karon Clay, Jill Voyles and Carol Lipp told of their trip to the Jacksonville quilt show. Many beautiful quilt projects were shown during Show and Tell. The meeting was adjourned at 8:25pm Respectfully submitted by Carol Lipp for Pam Cichanski Q-Tips Even though no one has stepped up to collect magazines for our next quilt show, please remember to save those magazines you no longer need. When the time comes, hopefully we will have someone to collect them for the quilt show. When sewing triangles always spray starch the fabric before cutting. This will prevent stretching and will feed through the machine without falling through the needle slot in the throat plate. If you have access to a photocopy machine, you have the perfect 'value' finder. Just slip a piece, or several pieces onto the glass, close the cover, and copy. Instant values, without the distraction of color! 2

3 3 Robin Adorna was the lucky winner of the October Door Prize. In the gift bag was a coffee mug, and fabric with an Alaska theme. Mary Gold - Nov 9 Alice Scheetz did a great job with the Thanksgiving theme for our last raffle. There were three lucky winners -- Mary Nissen, (she won 2), Jane Owens and Nancy Soles-Fishpaw. Alice has volunteered to handle our November raffle. The theme will be Sewing Items on fabric. Jane Clarke - Nov 11 Mary Ellen Taylor - Nov 12 Mary Lewis - Nov Board of Directors Thank you Wachovia Bank for your generous grant of $ for our Quilts for Cruisers Community Service Project. And thank you to Sandi Rothier for recommending us for this wonderful help in our on-going project. 5 5 In the past, we ve had Brown Bag Challenges; Block of the Month that we created quilts, gave away at our Holiday Party, or donated to Community Service, to name a few. Any ideas of what to do next? Would you like to take charge of a project?? Think of something we can all choose to do during 2011 and celebrate at our end-of-the year Holiday Party. Just let Bobbie Spann know if you are interested. We have received a request for our Guild to take part in the 46th Annual Charity Antiques & Collectibles Show, held February 25-27, 2011 at the Manatee Convention Center in Palmetto. We will have a booth at the Village Historical Park event, A 1910 Florida Cracker Christmas on Saturday, December 11th from 12-4pm. We will need helpers. If you would like to be one of those to help man the booth, please contact Hilary Macdonald, or ramaigault@excite.com They are asking our organization to consider giving a demonstration or short seminar on the art of quilting. The show features about 50 antiques & collectibles dealers from across the country. The proceeds from their show goes to local children s charities in our community. It would be very nice if one or several of our Guild members participated. If you are interested, please contact Ruth Ann Szymanski, Chairman of the event. 941/ Website: 5

6 6 Patchwords October/November 2010 We have decided to standardize our quilts size to a 40 x 50 which will serve well for the children receiving quilts in our Quilts for Cruisers project. Our thanks to all the ladies (Pat Pfeifle, Linda West, Nancy Luse, Judie Coffey, Marty Berles, Betty Jane Lutz, just to name a few) that took part in this challenge. We will continue to receive your quilts made from these squares, so please turn them in as they are finished. Our next scheduled workshops - Tues., Oct 26 & Nov 9 Location will be the MTI campus, Quilting Trailer on 57th between 34th and 26th Streets. Time will be 10am - 2pm. We need items to auction and are looking to our members for help. Hopefully you have been saving up items to turn in at our November meeting. For those Snow Birds, January last minute would be OK too. We will not take items at our December meeting. These items DO NOT have to be quilt related. They certainly can be unfinished projects or finished quilts you no longer want. Little items that we can turn into gift baskets would be great too. When the time arrives, we d love to receive baked items. We want your stuff!! Tickets to participate in the Bag Drop Auction and Silent Auction will be 40 tickets for $4.00 and sold at the beginning of our meeting. All monies collected will be put to good use by the Guild and announced at a later date how the monies will be used. Please support our Advertisers.
