1 Patchwords November 2008 Manatee Patchworkers We meet the first Monday evening of each month in the Knights of Columbus Hall at th Ave. W., Bradenton, FL Doors open at 6:30 and meetings begin at 7:00. Next meeting is September 1. President s Corner Well Ladies: What a wonderful season we are in it makes me want to quilt in orange yellows and make wonderful costumes. Dressed-up kids and autumn leaves make me so jealous of the snowbirds. We are so excited to be getting you all back, ladies, you have all been missed. On to the next season of baking pies and cookies...wrapping quilts we ve made all year long. We are putting out our best dishes and all those finishing touches that make our Thanksgiving holidays a tradition. As the guild moves into our winter sessions we are so excited about our classes: Sharon Schamber is coming and Will Owens Christmas Tree Project. We are so blessed to have many wonderful teachers in our guild. Our very own Mary Lewis will be teaching in January, and Janet Nelson in February. Hey now ladies, we can finally use all of those border/binding techniques we learned in last month s program...borders Borders Borders. I must take a moment to extend a mountain of gratitude to our talented program teachers. If you missed the meeting last month you truly missed an awesome treat. Janet Nelson, Hazeldean Meyers, Rose Ryan, and Carol Lipp together taught the most fantastic Round Robin. I have heard many many words of encouragement and thanks on your behalf...the ladies loved your program; we must do another like it in the future. I also appreciate all of your s and phone calls; each one seemed so uplifting you ladies truly love the guild and you have made it into a wonderful asset to the county at large, and to many ladies who use the guild as a way to learn and give back to the community. I also want to take a moment to say thanks to our board members who spend many hours working on our behalf, especially to Mary Lewis for our wonderful newsletter, keeping us all so well informed; and Victoria Baily for giving us many opportunities to serve the community better. On that note, ladies, I will bid you all adieu! Keep up the great work stitch n and enrich n all the lives we touch with our artistry. Juanita Dickinson Interim President Quilt Show 2010 We finally have a location and dates for our quilt show! The show will be at the Bradenton Municipal Auditorium in downtown Bradenton on February 6 and 7, 2010, with setup on February 5. Since this is a smaller facility than the civic center, we will have a smaller show, but of course an exciting and appealing one. The facility is attractive and conveniently located, with good parking. Our hope is that the earlier date and location near the South Florida Museum, restaurants, and downtown businesses will attract more winter residents as well as locals. Now we really have to get busy, and we d like to see everyone volunteer for something! There are plenty of opportunities for you to contribute in a small or larger way. Mary Lewis Quilt-show chair Our next board meeting is on November 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the Synovus Bank meeting room, 26th & Manatee. Members are welcome to attend.

2 Minutes of Manatee Patchworkers, October 6, 2008 The meeting was called to order by President Juanita Dickinson at 7:00 p.m. She led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes of the September meeting were accepted as written. Juanita Dickinson discussed upcoming classes. The classes are listed on the website as well as in the newsletter. Classes were still open as of meeting date. The holiday-party signup sheet will be available at the November meeting. Contact Sheila Walker or Juanita Dickinson if you wish to participate in decorating, setup, cleanup, etc. Sherry Ebey reported on membership. We have 144 members, with 58 in attendance and four guests. Wanda Phillips won the door prize. The treasurer s report was given by Penny Denault. The total income for September was $476 and expenses were $ There was a total of $ in checking and $10, in savings. Victoria Baily presented information on community service quilts. We will be donating twin-size quilts to Athena House, a halfway house in Ybor City, and newborn-size quilts to a project called Mothers Helping Mothers in Sarasota. We have numerous quilt tops to be completed. See the website for upcoming community service dates. Fat quarters for October were organized by Robin Adorna. Debbie Johnson will be coordinating fat quarters for November with the theme giving thanks. Nickel squares were collected by Robin Adorna and Jen Rauch. November s exchange will be purple batiks. A 50/50 raffle was held to help offset the cost of the rent increase. The raffle raised a total of $77. Pam Cichanski won and donated her half to the guild. The brown bag challenge is due in November, and the program will include presenting the finished projects. There was a discussion of the change of officers and Sandi Routhier s leave of absence. A motion was accepted for Sandi s leave of absence. An informative program working on various aspects of borders was presented by Carol Lipp, Rose Ryan, Hazeldean Meyers and Janet Nelson. It was very helpful in presenting new and classic ways to finish your quilts. The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 after show and tell. Respectfully submitted, Debra Magner A Tip from Sheila This is a tip that I tried and it works. I often find it difficult to iron out the crease in the center of a piece of fabric. It has been folded on the bolt and then often stored for a long time in my stash. So I tried Downy Wrinkle Release and it worked wonders. Smells good, too! Door Prize Each month a lucky winner collects a door prize provided by the previous month s winner. Wanda Phillips won the October door prize, so she will bring November s. 2

The winners of stacks of pink fabrics were Lin Garland, Bobbie Spann, Debbie Johnson, Carol Masulonis and Debbie Magner. Debbie Johnson will do the November raffle, with a theme of giving thanks. You get a ticket for every fat quarter you turn in! Getting the quilting done has been a struggle in the past, and it must be finished and appraised by September 2009, just a year away. We plan to have the top finished by April 2009 there will be many workshops to make the blocks and borders and to assemble the quilt top. Our guild has many accomplished quilters, and we want any member who wishes to have a chance to submit a written proposal to either hand or machine quilt our opportunity quilt. Your proposal should include the type of quilting (machine or hand), the proposed quilting design, and the price (or donation). Proposals from groups are also welcome; all work should be done by members of the guild. A final design will be available soon; written proposals must be in to the quilt-show chair, Mary Lewis, by February Proposals will be reviewed by the quilt committee for a decision. We re looking for holiday-party volunteers. Let coordinators Juanita Dickinson or Sheila Walker know if you re willing! 4
