President s Corner You have all heard the expression, shop til you drop? Well I can tell you about 23 ladies that did that on our bus trip of August 13 to Dunedin..and I mean it. We left Bradenton at 9:oo AM sharp and arrived at the Museum of Fine Arts about an hour later. We had a nice viewing of some wonderful quilts with a knowledgeable docent (she was also a quilter) who gave us a great tour. We had a good and nice lunch there before heading down to Rainbows End for shopping. Guess who showed up there about half way thru our shopping? Kimberly Einmo! We had a nice visit and she shopped for her latest project with us. We made a short but nice drive down to Clearwater and the Country Quilts and Bears. By this time we were all feeling tired and worn out. We left ½ an hour earlier than planned and headed home. Some of us could hardly walk or stand up we were so tired. I even witnessed a few on the bus home with heads down and eyes closed. Robin had some nice games for us to play on the way up and back to keep the ride short and we all had a prize or two to take home. It was a great day of fellowship and shopping. Most of the time a president of the guild praises and thanks her board upon leaving office. I want to take time to do it now. I could not do this job as easily as it seems without the help of a great board. Each one of them has a talent in the position they accepted and I am truly grateful. It surely does make my job easier. Thanks to each of you. We re working on some good things to come this fall. We have saved some of the goodies to share with the snowbirds upon their return, so stay tuned. Make sure to see the photos of our bus trip taken by Judi Coffey and Robin. There are also photos from Show and Tell at our last meeting. Our members are so talented and productive. Bobbie Thank you to all that attended the Chair meeting. One problem... I had way too much food left over ladies!! :-) Things are moving right along for the Quilt Show. We ll have photos of The Quilt ready when we give out the tickets. We re hoping everyone will want to sell a book of tickets (or two). We all know the more we sell, the better it is. It s such a beautiful quilt, there should be no problem selling the tickets. Carol Lipp will be working with everyone for the sale of tickets. Evelyn Fudge is hard at work with publicity. Jane Owens has signed up several for Demos at the show. Pam and Bobbie have been securing Vendors. Silent Auction needs a Chair. But all-in-all, it s starting to come together. Hope everyone is busy making beautiful quilts to hang in our show. Quilt Show Chair, Nan Soles-Fishpaw seweasytoquilt@aol.com Sat., Feb 4th Mini Retreat Kimberly Einmo s Lone Starburst Magic We meet the 1st Monday of each month at the Manatee County Public Library, 1301 Barcarrota Blvd. West, Bradenton, FL Snack & Social, 6:00 pm - Meeting Begins: 6:30 pm On speaker night, a $3.00 donation from non-members is greatly appreciated.

Patchwords Minutes Membership Meeting August 1, 2011 The meeting held at the Bradenton Main Library was called to order at 6:40 p.m. by Bobbie Spann who led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Officers Reports: President: Bobbie Spann presented Victoria Baily with an Atta Girl award for her service under pressure in teaching members how to make the Lasagna quilt at the last meeting. Bobbie explained that the August 13 bus trip to the Dunedin Fine Art Center, Rainbows End and possibly Country Quilts and Bears was put together after the last membership meeting and three more members would need to sign up to make the trip viable. Two additional members signed. The exhibit is displaying quilts from the Sunflower Collection from the National Quilt Museum in Paducah together with a local show entitled, Portals. The gathering place for the bus trip will be the west end of Barcarotta Street in the front of the library, water side of the street, but NOT the library parking lot. We will be at the Fine Art Center for about two hours, then will park at Rainbow s End for shopping and lunch close by, followed by a stop at Country Quilts and Bears if there is time. We will be back in Bradenton by approximately :30 p.m. The cost of the trip is $ Vice President: Randy Carman reported last weekend s retreat was a great success. She invited Kimberly Einmo to return in the winter months to teach her new pattern, Lone Star Strip Magic. Rose Ryan s purse class will be held on September 17 at South Winds at Five Lakes at a cost of $27.00 including the pattern. This will be followed on October 15 by a paper piecing class, taught by Carol Lipp, incorporating star blocks named after certain states. The location will be announced at a later date and the cost is also $ Secretary: Pam Cichanski The minutes were approved as posted in the July Newsletter. Communications: Robin Adorna notified the Guild that the Newsletter was to be printed later than usual to allow inclusion of retreat information. She asked members to save clean plastic Simply Orange and Tropicana orange juice bottles for use in the quilt show. Robin will post a new address list shortly on the website and requested new members see Judie Coffey for photographs to be included in the photo directory. Treasurer: Denise Pendleton gave a financial report for July which did not include the revenue from the bus trip. The report will be filed for audit. Membership: Lin Garland reported 33 members in attendance with 3 guests. Cheryl Healy signed up to become a member. Lin reminded us of the suggestion made earlier in the year that the Guild should make a quilt for the library in appreciation for their providing a room for our meetings and asked for any volunteers to see her. Lin also said the snack sign-up list will be on her table at the front door. Nancy will continue to bring drinks, cups and ice. Nancy will give the sheet to Robin so members can be thanked in the next Newsletter. Camilla Yost won the door prize and will bring in the prize for next month s meeting which will be held on the second Monday in September rather than the first, because of the Labor Day holiday. Bobbie revisited the tabled motion from July s meeting to set aside $ annually for the purchase of drinks, ice and paper supplies for refreshments and explained even though the Guild s financial position is sound, the budget for the 2012 quilt show requires us to be prudent with any extra expenditures. The Board looked at the budget and established a line item for drinks, ice and paper supplies. Sheila Walker amended her original motion to read that $ annually be budgeted for the refreshment supplies. Her motion was seconded by Barbara Jahnke and approved unanimously. September 2011 Quilt Show Chair: Nancy Soles Fishpaw announced that Kimberly Einmo will judge the quilt show and will also present a program on Saturday during the show. The program will be new and something she has not taught before. Nancy thanked those who have already volunteered to help at the show and asked for additional volunteers to sign up. Nancy will hold a meeting at her home on August 8 for quilt show committee chairpersons. She reported that the opportunity quilt cost just over $500.00, not including her $61.00 bill for thread, batting and miscellaneous small items. Community Service: Victoria Baily will resume community service workshops on the second Tuesday of Sept. and October, from 10:00a 2:00p at Manatee Technical Institute. Victoria will have a pattern available and noted making Lasagna quilts put a dent in our fabric supply. Librarian, Carol Masulonis thanked members for supporting the library and said she has a new catalog coming out soon and has purchased several new books Fat Quarter Raffle: Jane Owens presented bundles of beach fat quarters to Peggy Somerville and Rose Ryan. Next month s fabric will be Shades of Halloween. Bobbie auctioned off a cutting table donated to the Guild by a friend of Claire Zazitski as Lin demonstrated the features of the table which was eventually claimed by Nancy Soles Fishpaw. Sheila Walker thanked Randy Carman, Robin Adorna and Carol Lipp for their great work on the Retreat and suggested we all thank Quilter s Haven and Keep Me in Stitches for their donated door prizes. Everyone won a door prize at the Retreat. The documentary, Stitched, the Film was shown as the program for the evening while members enjoyed popcorn and sodas. The meeting concluded with Show and Tell which included 4 completed quilt tops from the Retreat, 9 Lasagna quilt tops, 5 community service quilts quilted by Rose Ryan and several other quilts showcasing the talents of our members. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Pam Cichanski, Secretary Please be sure to thank our Advertisers - Let them know you appreciate their support. Support those that support us!!

Patchwords September 2011 Tips Victoria Baily, Community Service Chair, receives the second Atta Girl Award given by our Guild. Victoria went above and beyond in attending our August meeting, staying the evening to demonstrate and create a Lasagna Quilt. All this having just returned from surgery and several weeks of rehab and still depending on her walker to get around. Thank you Victoria for your services and passion for our Community Service projects. When sewing at night, if you have trouble determining which is the right and back side of fabrics, stick a colored dot on the right side of the fabric. You can also mark the dot if you need to number your pattern piece. To make the dots go further, you can cut them in half. Join the fun. Get a head start on your Halloween projects.. The Fat Quarter Raffle for September is Halloween fabric. Spooky, cute, or just plain batty!! For each FQ you bring, you receive one ticket for a chance to win a bundle of fat quarters. The more FQs we collect, the more winners go home happy Board of Directors Bobbie Spann, President, (813) , BobbieS444@aol.com Randy Carman, Vice President, , randyc10@aol.com Pam Cichanski,Secretary,(813) ,gsfan52@tampabay.rr.com Denise Pendleton, Treasurer, , pendleton_quilts@msn.com Lin Garland, Member Ser., weavercreations@hotmail.com Robin Adorna, Comm. & Newsletter, , adornr@aol.com Our August meeting was attended by 33 members and 3 guests.

September 2011 Patchwords Joyce Harmon - Sept 4 Robin Adorna - Sept 8 Wanda Phillips - Sept 9 Rose Ryan - Sept 15 Mary Alta Griffin - Sept 23 Nancy Luse - Sept 26 We really want to have a Silent Auction at our Quilt Show. However, we need two things accomplished before that can happen. #1 We need a Chair to handle the collection of items, and what goes with setup at the show. Lots of help out there to assist you in what needs to be done. #2 We need items from our membership. We are looking for smaller wall hangings, table runners, sets of placemats, etc. If you think you would like to be the Chair, please let Nancy Fishpaw know. If you would like to contribute an item, we would be very happy to receive it. We sure hope you are all busy creating your Bag Lady challenge for the quilt show. We are hoping all our members join in so we have a wonderful display of your talent. The challenge pieces will be displayed in a specially marked area along with the bag of inspiration. The Challenge is to recreate the bag s design using fabric. So when you re auditioning bags, (shopping bags that do not have a copy write mark) look at the design and think how you might reinterpret this using fabric. Your project can be in any number of formats wall hanging, table runner, tote bag, etc., but may not exceed 100 inches in circumference. So get busy, we only have a few more months to go. Be sure to put a label on your work. Hold on to it until the Show. We ll take them during the usual dropdrop-off. Time is running out, but for these smaller quilted items, sure we have lots of time!! Please recycle your used ink cartridges with Robin at our Guild meetings. Also, if you purchase from Staples, we d love to have you use our number so we receive credit. It helps the Guild a lot.

Patchwords September August 2011 Fun & games! Beautiful quilts! And Shop till you Drop! Sorry to say, if you weren t with us, you missed a great day. We all enjoyed the quilts, the luncheon and the shopping. Games, prizes and a great opportunity to meet and greet some new members, friends of friends and relatives of members. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to post photos of the quilts. But here are a few of our group...
