1 January 2018 President s Message Guild Calendar 16 th January 2018 Guild Meeting 9:00 am Monthly Guild Meeting Location: Landing Sports Centre Loft, Spadina Ave, Chilliwack I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and rang in the New Year with a positive bang! How many of you made New Year s resolutions? I didn t make any. I finally realized that whenever I made them I automatically set myself up to fail just by the very fact that thinking about the resolution gave me a lot of unnecessary stress! In my personal life I do, however, have some projects and plans in mind for the coming year. I am thinking about incorporating a new technique in my hobbies, whether it be sewing, quilting or painting, but I haven t decided which one yet. I have a number of doilies that my mother crocheted for me some have never been used so I am thinking about creating something on a vintage style with those. Added to this we just added 3 great-nieces to the family, so I need to create something for them, not to mention completing my donation to our We Care program. (Goodness, now I am suddenly very busy!) Some little trips or holidays come to mind, and of course, visits to see the grandchildren are a priority. Hubby just turned 70 so we are planning on doing a little more travelling while we still can. We also have some upcoming plans and projects for the guild but at this time only one will be mentioned. We need to form a Raffle quilt committee to get our new raffle quilt underway. At this point I am assuming that the guild is planning a quilt show in 2019 so it is better to start sooner rather than later! Please think about being on this committee we will be asking for volunteers at our meeting on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday, Marcy Horswill from the Canadian Quilter s Association will be visiting us and talking about the upcoming conference in Vancouver. 2 January is We Care month, so we can all work on our quilts, pillowcases, heart pillows and placemats. If you require batting or backing for your We Care quilts be sure to let Nancy Bil know before Tuesday, so she can bring it for you. Also, if you wish to bring your machine with you and sew, please do so. I am looking forward to seeing everyone again! Lynn Garbay P.S. At January s meeting, the We Care committee will bring more pre-cut fabric. The 2018 patterns are stored on the website: Don t forget to sign up for We Care Sewing Day at our guild meeting on Tuesday 19 th Devember,2017 Location: at Sardis Library, 5819 Tyson, Chilliwack Date: 27th January 2017 Time: 10:00 to 3:00 Guild members should contact Nancy to request batting and backing for We Care quilts. Remember the Guild supplies the batting and backing for one-two quilts per member for the We Care quilts, and members generally use their own fabrics for the quilt tops. 6 Member s Area Favorite Tips: Every day items to keep us quilting and sewing. 1. Clean your iron regularly: Quilt Easy way to clean your iron 2. Keeping our Sewing Machine in good working condition. Vacuum Attachment Kit will help you suck dirt out of your sewing machine. Me, I use a Qtip and have it serviced every year. 3. Having trouble sewing straight lines? There are lots of tools out there to help you. Try some of theses. a. Stitch perfect seams and tucks without measuring b. Or just use Painter s Tape 4. Needle threader a. Try one of threads b. Or use the old standby wet your thumb/finger and poke it through the needle. 5. We can never have TOO much light. a. Depending on where you are sewing, there is always a solution for more light. But I like anything with the option of magnifying. These eyes are not getting any younger. Page 6 of 10
