1 Snowflakes Styro Ornament By Yvette Humbert NETWORK MAGAZINE Snowflakes Styro Ornament Supplies Gum paste White Modeling chocolate Clear, red and Green pre - cooked Isomalt Pearl Dust Gold, Silver Disco Dust (and your choice of colors) Gold and Silver Highlighter dust Piping gel Lemon extract Cooking spray Equipment Styrofoam balls (here I used 2 balls) Round/Oval Styrofoam ball Snowflakes Impression mat Large Pearl Brooch Small Pearl mold (GG003) Heart frame (VR001) Poinsettia mold (KT001) Icicle mold Drop mold Snowflake mold Snowflake cutters Angel mold from Daisy frame (VR003) Pearl rope mold (small & medium sizes) Small round brushes: 1 each for gold, silver, pearl dust and 1 for piping gel Mini palette knife Exacto knife or disposable scalpel 9 rolling pin Silicon mat Your favorite silicon lace mat Small silicon cups to melt the isomalt Skewers (to hold styrofoam while they dry) Clear fishing line (for hanging the ornaments) Creme brulee or chef torch

2 Snowflake Ornament STEP 1: Roll out some gum paste and imprint the snowflakes with the snow flake mat. cut a circle to match the size of your styrofoam piece STEP 2: Attach this gum paste disc to the styrofoam with a bit of piping gel. Smooth to make it fit. Cover the other side in the same manner. STEP 3: Place a string of pearls around, on the seam Pearl Ornament STEP 1: With gum paste, make 2 impressions of the pearl mold. STEP 2: Press down a small ball of gum paste to make a dome. Affix on the back of one impression. Brush the entire impression and dome with piping gel and place the second impression on top. Gently smooth, being careful not to flattened the pearl impressions. STEP 3: Paint around the pearl impressions with a small brush and a mix of gold or silver dust and lemon extract. Paint the pearls with a mix of pearl dust and lemon extract. STEP 4: Finish with a row of gum paste pearls brushed with pearl dust. With the awl, punch a hole and insert the clear fishing line and tie.

3 Round Styro Ornaments STEP 1: Cover the ball with white modeling chocolate, or your color of choice. Smooth the modeling chocolate over the styrofoam ball and let dry on a skewer. STEP 2: When dry, you can paint the balls gold or silver with a mix of gold/silver petal dust and lemon extract. STEP 3: Paint the ornaments with piping gel and sprinkled gold or silver disco dust to entirely cover them. You can use your favorite disco dust colors as well. Here, I also used green. Finishing the Gumpaste Ornaments STEP 1: Make an impression of the small pearl mold in gum paste. STEP 2: Punch a hole in the center for the fishing line loop and let dry. Paint gold or silver. STEP 3: Pass the hanging loop thru and tie a knot. Dip the knot in isomalt and secure inside the hole make by the skewer. Glue the cap to the ball with piping gel.

4 Isomalt Ornaments with Inserts STEP 1: Start by making your inserts (angel, snowflake, etc) and the Heart frame in gum paste and let dry (overnight is best) Punch a hole in the top part of the frame. Brush your inserts with pearl dust. Paint the Heart frame with pearl dust and lemon extract. STEP 2: Place your dried frame on a silicon mat. Pour about 1/8 of clear isomalt in the frame. Let set for a few minutes. STEP 3: Center your insert (here a snowflake) in the frame and pour clear isomalt around your insert, until just covered and let set. STEP 5: Make the rectangular frame in Isomalt in the color of your choice STEP 6: Place your isomalt frame on a silicon mat. Place your angel in the frame, trimming the angel as needed to fit into the frame. When you are satisfied with the fit, secure the angel to the frame with a bit of clear isomalt.

5 Round & Snowflake Isomalt Ornaments STEP 1: Spray the inside of your cutter with cooking spray, wipe off excess. Place your form on a silicon mat. Sugar lace mats work very well if you would like a design on your ornaments. If the texture on the mat is deep, place a gum paste rope around the form. STEP 2: Pour clear or colored isomalt (about 1/4 thick) in the forms and let set. (approximately 15mn) The bigger the form, and the thicker the isomalt layer, the longer it will take to set. STEP 3: When your pieces are set, remove from forms. Air bubbles can be removed with a creme brulee torch. Icicles and Others Isomalt Ornaments STEP 1: Pour Isomalt into the Icicle, Poinsettia and Drop molds. Let set before unmolding. STEP 2: When unmolded, pierce a hole at the top of each ornament to insert the hanging loop. To make a hole in the Isomalt Ornament Heat the tip of an awl (or long nail) and pierce thru. The heat will melt a hole in the isomalt. NOTE: For the poinsettia, I dropped some red isomalt in the berry cavities with a toothpick, let it set for a minute or so, then poured the green isomalt to fill the mold.

6 Tips & Techniques To melt the pre-cooked isomalt, put a few isomalt tiles in the silicon cup. Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds, then 15 seconds intervals until the isomalt is liquid. CAUTION When the isomalt is liquid, it is very hot (300*). I use cotton gloves with latex gloves on top for protection. Wait till the bubbles subside for a clear finished piece. If you still have a few air bubbles in your piece, you can use a torch lightly over the surface to get rid of them.
