Is Resin Jewellery Hard to Make? Beautiful examples of resin jewellery are on display in most shopping centres. The quality is so good that it is difficult to tell the real from the artificial. The real amber, jade or turquoise cannot be distinguished from the imitation gemstones. This commercial interest has been sparked by the discovery that the new resins that are being used to manufacture these artificial gemstones are safe and easy to handle. They are also capable of being used to make an incredibly wide range of fascinating and new looking jewellery designs. No longer are artisans restricted to the limited range of colours found in nature but can actually set about designing their own gemstone material. New exotic shapes are formed in clay, moulds made with silicone and cast with resin coloured and/or treated with embedments derived from the imagination. No longer have new designs to wait for the time or economic schedules of the large manufacturer. Small one-person designers are marketing new jewellery ranges, often taking advantage of the internet, to cut marketing costs and to get their ideas before the public. This manufacturing and selling concept has never been possible previously. As described new resins and the internet has made it all possible. Exciting times we live in, for the person with some go in them! A simple web site now provides the entrepreneur with a shop front to the world, at a very low cost compared with the older, slower and more costly previous methods of marketing. There is no excuse not to try a new venture these days. To fail can be heartbreaking, not to even try is inexcusable. The old excuse of high costs no longer applies. We live in exciting times! New resins are coming on the market at a faster rate. There are three main types of resin used for jewellery, polyurethane, epoxy and polyester. Easy mixing became possible with the development of two part resins mixed 1:1 equal parts of Part A and Part B and Part A 2 parts and Part B 1 part. Polyester Resins have been used for many years and give a clear glass like appearance when cast. However they have dropped from favour because of their unpleasant odour and the noxious catalyst MEKP which must be used. Polyester Clear Resin is still essential for the larger castings. Epoxy resins are widely used, have no unpleasant odour and are safe. CrystalCast is the most economic, mixes 1:1 and is reasonably translucent. CrystalCast is water clear, mixes 1:1 and is probably the most air bubble free, clear resin used for jewellery. Polyurethane resins are a more recent development. CraftCast White is the most popular resin. It mixes 1:1. sets up in 3 minutes and can be demoulded in 10 minutes. It is safe and very easy to use and having a viscosity similar to water gives magnificent reproduction of all detail. 6

Many dyes and pigments are available to give a wide range of colour combinations. Special effects are possible by dusting the mould with one of the powdered metallic or mica powders. To make life easy for the beginner, resin moulds are in stock to produce bangles, cabochons, pendants and a variety of jewellery shapes to cover most situations. For the more experienced hobbyist or small manufacturer, CraftSil Silicone can be used to make an endless variety of designs. Making resin jewellery is so easy, that it is within the reach of everyone young and old. There are even jewellery kits available, containing everything you will need to start enjoying this rewarding hobby. 7

Techniques for Casting Resin Jewellery Layering: One of the basic techniques of casting is to layer objects within the casting. This is achieved by embedding the pieces into the cast. Layering allows the creation of colored layers or objects to create a stained-glass effect. Layering is also one of the methods used to create dichroic glass. Instructions: Step 1: Mix the CrystalCast as described previously. Step 2: Pour enough CrystalCast into the mould so that a ¼ inch (5mm) clear layer forms on the bottom of the cast. Check and remove any bubbles that have formed after about 5 to 10 minutes. Step 3: While this first layer is still liquid, and before embedding objects on this first layer, brush or pour on a thin layer of CrystalCast. This will help to prevent small bubbles from forming around the object. Once you have done this embed the object in the still liquid CrystalCast that is in the mould. This must be completed before the CrystalCast in the mould sets. Step 4: Mix the second layer of CrystalCast by following the manufacturer s instructions. Add in other items, colorants, glitter, etc to the CrystalCast and pour solution into the mould. Allow the casting to cure completely before removing it from the mould. Creating Sparkle By Adding Ornamental Elements: The possibilities are practically endless. Here, are some techniques that can be used to add fibres, beads, dried flowers, paper images/photos, metallic flakes and glitter, mylar and poly clay bits. Fibres: Fibres can play many different roles in creating artistic designs. Small threads, cotton, or hair can be added to castings to give a fractured look or simply to add interest to the piece. Use limited amounts of fibre per each casting. Begin by pouring a thin layer of CrystalCast into the mould and then add the fibres immediately. Beads: Beads can be added into the mould before pouring in the CrystalCast. Examples of beads to use are seed beads, bugle beads, smaller glass marbles/orbs, etc. Keep in mind that beads are difficult to sand or drill holes through, when they are embedded in the CrystalCast. Dried Flowers: To add dried flowers or pressed flowers pour a thin layer of CrystalCast into the mould and then add the flowers. Make sure that the flowers are arranged to your satisfaction before adding in the additional CrystalCast. Paper Images: To embed paper motifs or stickers into CrystalCast the paper if uncoated must be sealed. To seal uncoated paper, either apply two coats of white glue or seal by spraying on a coat of artist acrylic spray. Un-coated paper will become transparent if not treated. 8

Metalic Flakes & Glitter: Adding in small bits of silver, gold, copper and other colored metallic flakes as a means of providing a sparkling touch to castings. To give castings a dichroic glass look, add in ultra fine glitters. Mylar: The sparkle and intrigue of Mylar flakes, strands or pieces cut into shapes can be added to the CrystalCast. The benefit of embedding Mylar is that it is not only bright and shiny it is also interesting. The Faux Opal technique uses Mylar to achieve its stunning brilliance. Polymer Clay Bits: When using polymer clay, remember that it must be baked before being added to the CrystalCast. Polymer clay bits work well to simulate gem stones. To prep the polymer, grate the clay onto a ceramic tile. Bake clay by following manufacturer s instructions. Let the clay cool and then add either to the CrystalCast or directly into the mould. Rolled Puddle Beads: Making puddle beads is fairly easy. This is a great technique that can be used to make many matching beads at one time. This technique does not work when using granite powder. Instructions for making puddle beads: Step 1: Mix 30ml of CrystalCast and then pour it onto a sheet of waxed paper. Spread the CrystalCast into a shape that is 12x24cm (10 by 5 ) by using a wooden stick or other utensil. Step 2: Add fibers, glitter or other fine gauge objects to the puddle. Step 3: Allow the puddle to cure for 8 to 12 hours. The time frame is important because the next step requires that the puddle be pliable but not fully cured. Step 4: Using proper safety equipment such as latex gloves, cut the puddle into strips that represent the beads length. Step 5: Roll the strips into a bead and apply tape to the end. The tape will keep the end in place as the bead finishes curing. Cure beads for an additional 12 hours. A strip of puddle that is 2.5cm (1 inch) wide and 10cm (4 inches) long will make a single bead that is 2.5cm (1 inch) long and 1.25cm (½ inch) thick. There will be a natural hollow core to each bead. Cutting the puddle into triangle will make conical beads. Use your imagination and explore the possibilities. Puddle Nuggets: This is a technique that is very similar to the steps used to create the rolled puddle beads. The difference is that instead of rolling the puddle into a tube, it is instead, rolled into a ball or abstract ball shape. A piece of waxy thread is used to maintain a hole in the bead. 9

Once the nugget is cured, and the waxy thread is removed, a fine wire can be passed through the hole to create jewellery. This technique does not work with Granite Powders. Directions: Step 1: Tape wax paper onto a flat work surface. Step 2: Pour the CrystalCast onto the wax paper and allow it to form a thick puddle. Let this puddle cure for 4-6 hours or until such time as the puddle can be worked without sticking to your fingers. Humidity and temperature may affect curing times. Wear protective gloves and other safety equipment as needed. Step 3: Using a pair of sharp scissors remove a piece of the puddle. The size of the piece that is removed will equate roughly to the size of the bead that is being created. Use a piece of wax thread and then roll the piece of puddle around the thread so that a rough ball is formed. The wax thread should be long enough to tie the ends together. Step 4: To cure the bead, hang it from the thread. This will prevent the bead from becoming lopsided or flat on one side. Beads can be drilled once they are fully cured if a larger hole is desired. A longer curing time before rolling the bead will give the bead added texture. Feel free to add colour to the CrystalCast to give the beads a uniqueness that is found in natural stones. Polymer Clay Sculpture & CrystalCast: This is a great technique that can be used to create cast jewellery that match the sculpted bezel or holders that are seen in the work of artisans who make free-form jewelry. Using a plastic or metal texture sheet can give the polymer clay unique patterns and or textures by simply rolling the clay over the texture sheet. Directions: Step 1: Using kitchen foil to create a foil shape by packing foil into a jewellery mould. The goal is to make a solid casting of the foiled surface of the jewellery mould. Step 2: Prepare the polymer clay by following the manufacturer s instructions. Press the clay around the foil base. Make sure to insert any jewellery clips etc so that the piece can be attached (if desired) to jewellery. Bake the clay and foil by following manufacturers instructions. Step 3: Separate the foil from the hardened polymer clay. Save the foil shape as it can be used again to make additional clay pieces. Step 4: Using the original mould, cast an CrystalCast jewellery piece. Step 5: To assemble the clay bezel to the cast jewelry, use glue to firmly attach the two pieces together. The beautiful aspect of this technique is that the bezel and the cast jewelry piece will fit perfectly together. 10

Enameling With CrystalCast: CrystalCast is the perfect tool for creating cold enameled objects. Metal objects such as coins, charms, or small di-cast models can be used. Directions: Step 1: Mix CrystalCast per manufacturers instructions. Pour equal amounts into several small cups. Step 2: Add transparent dyes to cups to create desired colors. Step 3: Using a small disposable brush or toothpick apply the CrystalCast to the object. If the CrystalCast should drip or run, allow the piece to cure completely and then sand off the drip from the bottom of the piece. Coating With CrystalCast: Using CrystalCast to coat decorative objects can provide a classic touch to everyday items. Coating paper shapes or small drawings is also a great way to make unique pieces of art or jewelry. Remember that untreated paper will need to be sealed with two coats of white glue or sprayed with artist acrylic aerosol spray, if it is to be used with CrystalCast; otherwise, the paper will become transparent. Directions: Step 1: Using toothpicks that are inserted into craft foam, level the pieces of paper to be coated. Step 2: Gently pour the prepared CrystalCast over the pieces until thoroughly coated. Wait for 10 minutes and then remove any air bubbles that may form on the surface. Step 3: Let the object cure for 24 hours. When object is fully cured, remove imperfections by gently sanding with 150 grit sandpaper. Filling With CrystalCast: CrystalCast is a great product that artists can use to fill objects. Using transparent dyes with CrystalCast can give objects such as baked polymer, sea shells, etc. a unique and artistic look as well as special effects. 11

How to Make Imitation Gem-Stones Dichroic Glass: To make Dichroic Glass, pour a thin layer of CrystalCast into the mould. Add metallic flakes, fine glitter powder, Mylar pieces or a mixture of any of these items. Allow the mixture to cure. Add colored CrystalCast to the mould. Any colour may be used, but black is typically a good choice. Amber: Prepare the CrystalCast by following the manufacturers instruction. To the CrystalCast add in Amber dye. Add dye slowly until desired color tone is reached. Combine a pinch of dried rose petals, a pinch of copper metallic flakes and a pinch of gold metallic flakes. Add this combination to the amber CrystalCast by mixing well and then pouring the solution into the mould. Add in a few black polymer clay bits and let the mixture cure. To create a fossilized look, add in plastic insects or dried insects into the mixture and allow the mixture to cure. Jade: Prepare the CrystalCast and add in Green and Amber transparent dyes. Add dyes one drop at a time until the desired color tone is reached. Adding in a drop of white opaque pigment will give the piece a semi-transparent look. Mix the solution well and then pour into the mould. Add a few sprinkles of black polymer clay bits to add character to each piece. Allow the casting to cure for 24 hours. Rose Quartz: Prepare the CrystalCast and add in red and pearl transparent dyes to make a light pink colour. Mix dyes one drop at a time, until desired tone is reached. To give the casting a look of Quartz add in a pinch or so of gold metallic flakes. Make sure the solution is mixed well and then pour contents into the mould. Prepare the CrystalCast by following the previous directions. Add white opaque pigment to the CrystalCast. This will help to duplicate the milky look of Rose Quartz. Add a few drops of CrystalCast and white pigment mixture to the mould and stir with a toothpick and let it cure. Turquoise: Prepare the CrystalCast and add in blue and white opaque pigments to achieve a light blue tone. Add to this mixture a small amount of amber transparent dye to help mute the blue tone. Mix one drop at a time until the desired tone is achieved. For added effect, mix in a small pinch of black polymer bits. Pour solution into moulds and leave to cure for 24 hours. Opal & Abalone: 13

Prepare the CrystalCast and pour a thin layer into the moulds. Sprinkle iridescent Mylar flakes into the CrystalCast or add in a larger piece of Mylar. Let this mixture cure. Prepare the additional CrystalCast and add in white opaque pigment. This is the trick to giving the casting a faux opal look. Since gems are unique, add in a top layer of transparent CrystalCast to give the faux gem depth. To make Abalone, follow the above instructions but top the cast with a layer of mixed CrystalCast that has been coloured with black opaque pigment. Allow the casting to cure for 24 hours. Rutilated Quartz: Prepare the CrystalCast and add in amber transparent dye. Remember when mixing colours into the CrystalCast to always add coloured dye one drop at a time until the desired tone is achieved. Pour CrystalCast until ¾ of the mould is filled. Add in fibers to each mould. A mixture of gold and brown fibers will help to achieve the desired look. Let this casting cure and then top each mould with a layer of CrystalCast that is coloured with amber transparent dye mix with white opaque pigment which is used to give the casting a golden tone. Let the casting cure for 24 hours. 14

What kinds of photo jewellery can you make? There are a lot of different types and styles of photo jewellery. Amongst the most popular styles are photo pendants, photo rings, floating pendants, photo bracelets photo brooches and charms. In addition to jewellery there are also photo keychains and photo dog tags to name just a few ways of personalizing every-day items. Photo jewellery is easy to make and can be produced overnight with the use of glass clear resins, that permanently seal and protect the photos within the jewellery. Many of our customers start out by making a piece of photo jewellery for themselves, wear some to work and find that everyone wants one too! Before they know it, they are making money in their spare time, with a photo jewellery making business. No one has seen anything like it before. What resin to use. There are at least 3 different resins being used for the production of photo jewellery. Polyester resin, polyurethane resin and last but not least epoxy resin. Polyester Clear Cast Resin is the most economical resin to use but it has some nasty side effects. The MEKP catalyst used to harden the resin is fairly toxic stuff with a very nasty odour and should only be used in well ventilated areas. Polyurethane resin (CraftCast Resin) comes in several forms, a white, opaque resin that hardens in 3 minutes and can be removed from the mould in only 10 minutes, and a water white clear resin. These are widely used and make beautiful jewellery. Epoxy resin (CrystalCast Resin) is still the most popular. It has none of the bad features of polyester and provides jewellery makers with a safe, easy to use, slower setting resin, with good optical clarity, that many jewellery makers prefer. Types of Resin Photo Jewellery To use pendants as an example of what styles of jewellery can be made: (1) The pendant can be produced in a resin mould at the required shape and size (2) It can be made with the photo cut to the required free form shape and coated with resin as a domed piece (3) The photo may be cut to size, placed in a jewellery bezel and embedded with resin. Photo Printing and Sizing Print the photo in an ink jet printer to the required size using waterproof paper if available. If using any other type of printing paper, make sure it is sealed before using the resin. A handy sized paper can be found on ebay (4x6 Canon Photo Printing Paper 50 s) 15

If you experience any difficulty in sizing your photos to the required size Google photo resizer or use one of the following programs. nchsoftware.com/photopad avs4you.com/image-converter download.cnet.com/fastone-photo-resizer fastone.org/fsresizerdownload.htm Cut to size with a pair of scissors. Make the cut a fraction smaller than the base of the mould or bezel, so it will be easy to slip into the resin. Sealing the Photo Seal both sides of the photo by: (1) Paint with a sealer such as Mod Podge (2) Spray with an acrylic art sealer (3) Laminate in a laminating unit (4) Seal with clear packaging tape 16

Final steps: Casting the Resin Please read the directions that come with your CrystalCast casting kit. It is important to make certain that you have all of the necessary equipment and supplies available before you start a project that involves CrystalCast. Prepare the Jewellery Moulds: Use wax paper or freezing paper to protect the work area. Prepare all mould cavities with a light spray of mould release/conditioner. If there is excess release/conditioner use a clean paper towel to remove the excess. Let the mould dry before adding in the CrystalCast. No mould release is required if using a jewellery bezel as the resin and photo will be permanently embedded. CrystalCast Clear Epoxy Resin Casting Instructions Step 1: Make sure the CrystalCast is at the proper temperature. The optimum working temperature of CrystalCast is 75 F or 24 C. The CrystalCast bottles should feel warm to the touch but not hot. If the bottles are too cold, they can be warmed gently, by placing them under running warm water. It is important not to expose them to a hot environment, so make sure to only use warm water to raise the temperature and cool water to decrease the temperature. If the CrystalCast is too cold, the casting will be cloudy and not clear. It will also contain microscopic bubbles that will spoil the look of the casting. Step 2: Measure and mix the CrystalCast. The ratio is 2 parts of resin to one part of catalyst. It is important to measure the liquids and not just guess. If the mixture is not exact, the casting will be soft and often sticky. This means that the piece will be unusable. The mixing of the two chemicals will result in the creation of a chemical bond. To achieve the proper bonding between the two chemicals, the mixture must be mixed twice and in two stages. The first mixing is one unit of resin and one unit of hardener. These should be mixed in a plastic mixing container that has straight sides, a flat bottom and is of wax free construction. Use a wood stick to mix the components. Mix for 2 minutes. Mixing should be in such a way that the wooden stick scrapes the sides and bottom of the container. As a last measure, the stick should be cleaned by scraping it gently along the rim of the container. The goal is to make certain that all of the chemicals are mixed thoroughly. When the two minutes are up, the mixture should be poured into a second mixing container that is clean. Using a NEW stick, stir the contents for another minute. Add colour dyes if desired, and mix until the proper tone is achieved. 17

Pour the contents into the mould or bezel. If you have extra CrystalCast, pour the excess into the base of some other moulds. This will help to create different looks for the castings. Read the sections about Layering and embedding for instructions on using partially filled moulds. 18

Treatment of Air Bubbles: CrystalCast is designed to degas itself within a couple of minutes. If fillers are added to the CrystalCast mixture, additional bubbles may form. The bubbles should rise to the top and dissipate on their own and in a short period of time. If bubble are persistent, then use a hair dryer and pass warm air over the surface of the mould. Do so quickly as hot air can melt some moulding materials. Cure Times and Temperatures: The ideal curing temperature for CrystalCast is between 70 F / 21 C and 85 F / 29 C. The amount of time needed for the casting to fully cure is dependent upon room temperature, as well as the thickness of the casting. The normal curing times for a 1 inch (2.5cm) thick casting is 24 hours for soft cure and up to 72 hours for a hard cure. De-Moulding: All pieces should be cured for a minimum of 24 hours, before attempting to de-mould. Pressing from the bottom will usually do the trick, but a gentle twisting of a rigid type plastic mould can also be used. Try to avoid over twisting the plastic mould as they will lose their shape over time. Trim and Sand Edges: The edges of any casting can be sanded by using 150 grit sandpaper to remove extra CrystalCast. Sandpaper can also be used to reshape edges. Using a sharp knife or a pair of scissors may also help. Using a file, sander, or Dremel to shape or carve castings should be followed up by using 150 grit sandpaper to help remove and smooth scratches, etc. 19

How to Finish your Resin Jewellery Drilling: Drilling a hole into the casting that you create is pretty simple. Use a standard hand drill or rotary tool. If needed, mark the piece where the hole will go before drilling the piece. If you use the appropriate drill bit, the resulting hole will work with the wire gauge or cord that will be used. Place a board under your project so that the drill does not mar your work surface. Attaching Jewelry Findings: If time is essential then use 5 minute epoxy glue to attach jewelry findings to the CrystalCast pieces. It is better to use the 30 minute epoxy glue for stronger adhesion. If using CrystalCast to attach jewelry findings, mix some of CrystalCast as per instructions and use a small brush or toothpick to attach jewelry findings. Findings may need to be secured using tape while the CrystalCast cures. Allow the piece to cure for 24 hours. Embedding Jewelry Findings: Embedding a finding into a casting is simply the act of placing a finding where it should go during the creation of the casting. An example would be to place a 25mm (1 inch) long metallic tube beads into the CrystalCast and then allow the piece to fully cure. The bead provides a threadable finding. The trick is to make sure that both ends of the bead are exposed to the air and not embedded into the CrystalCast. To achieve this, support the beat or finding in such a way that it will function as planned once the piece is fully cured. Beaded Bezel: The beaded bezel is designed to not only frame the casting but to accent the piece as well. The wire portion of the bezel is used as a finding so that the casting can be attached to jewelry cording or wire. Directions: Once a casting has been made, thread a 25cm(10 inch) (19-20 gauge) wire with chosen beads. Thread only enough beads to firmly surround your casting. Twist the ends of the wire together to make the beaded bezel snug around the casting. Mix 25ml (1 ounce) of the CrystalCast. Place the casting and the beaded bezel onto a sheet of wax paper and pour a small amount of the CrystalCast over the pendant. When the item is cured, trim any excess from the sides of the bezel with scissors and then sand the edges with 150 grit sandpaper. Form a loop with the end of the bezel wire. The pendent is now ready to become the center piece of a necklace. Wire Bezel: A wire bezel can add character and charm to a pendent. To make a wire bezel, wrap 28 gauge wire around a small dowel. Slide the wire off of the dowel making sure to keep the spiral shape. Flatten the wire and then wrap it around the pendent or object. 20

Using a small brush or toothpick, apply CrystalCast to the wire where it touches the casting. This is a basic technique that can be combined with beading and other techniques to create dazzling show pieces. Wire Ring: To create a wire ring that can be used on small castings, drill a hole lengthwise through the casting. Thread a 25cm (10 inch) strand of sterling silver wire or other wire through the drilled hole. Wrap a few inches of the excess wire around a small dowel rod and then carefully thread the end of the wire through the hole again. The spiraled wire will give a unique look to the top of the wire ring. Coil the ends of the wire a few times around a small object so that the ends look like an expanding circle of wire much like symbol seen here. These ends can be glued to the casting by using a small amount of CrystalCast. Be sure to trim away any extra wire. Wire Wrapping: Wire wrapping is a sophisticated technique that can be easily applied to castings. While the casting is new and not yet cured, twist the end of a 24 to 28 gauge wire into a loop, leaving about 12mm (½ inch) of wire below the loop. This will form a post. This loop will become the fasting for the pendent. Once the loop is made, wrap the wire down the post and carefully bend the back longer length of wire. The fitting cannot be placed into the CrystalCast and secured so that it does not move. Once the casting is fully cured, wrap the additional wire around the piece in a way that is pleasing. Then secure the loose end to the wire loop and post. Trim off extra wire. Layering Pieces: Using CrystalCast to layer smaller pieces of casting or other trinkets is a fairly simple process. Use a small amount of CrystalCast as glue and smaller pieces become unique and artistic expressions that offer dimension and charm. TIP: Use tape to hold the pieces in place until the CrytalCast sets. Basic Beading: Equipment and supplies needed for basic beading work. Glass beads, Crimp beads, flexible jewelry cords, wire and clasps. Tools: Crimping pliers, wire cutters, needle nose jewellery pliers as well as a beading mat or tray. Standard length necklaces are as follows: Customization is perfectly acceptable. Choker necklace or pendent: 40cm (16 inches) Princess necklace: 45cm (18 inches) Matinee necklace: 60cm (24 inches) Opera necklace: 80cm (32 inches) Bracelet: 17.5cm (7 inches) 21

How to Turn Your Resin Jewellery Hobby into a Second Income Many of our resin jewellery customers have noticed that when they start wearing their latest designs to work, others want them too! Actually wearing the finished pieces of jewellery is without doubt the most effective way of advertising that you can imagine. And of course there is the added benefit that this type of promotion costs you absolutely nothing. The fact that the jewellery is entirely original, means that no one will have seen them before and this can quickly become a talking point amongst your friends and acquaintances. This has led many, to wanting to make more sales, with an initial trickle of dollars, leading to a steady second income. Think of a suitable business name, get some business cards printed and give them to your jewellery loving friends and family, to start handing them out. This leads to the wonder of word of mouth advertising, that carries the news of your venture far and wide. Many a business has been started using this method and before you are aware of it, you will have people willing to pay you, to make them unique items of resin jewellery. Any size or shape of a finished component is possible with the use of ready-made moulds, or by using either liquid silicone to make a mould or with the use of the new quick and easy silicone mould putty. In 10 minutes you can have a new mould made and begin casting resin. Finished resin jewellery cast parts can be polished or drilled easily and cleanly, using simple hand or battery operated drills, to add links to bracelets or pendants. With the use of resin you are no longer restricted in the type of ornaments you can offer. Simulated semi-precious stones such as quartz, jade, opal and amber, can easily be made with suitable coloured additives. Beautiful glass effects can be achieved by embedding materials such as dichroic and gold and other metallic powders and flakes. Pendants have been seen, sporting clock parts in resin. A very unusual but striking approach. Making faux amber calls for a lot of inventiveness. One way to start is by adding a base colour to the resin then a pinch of crushed and dried rose petals and finish with a little copper and gold metallic flakes. Many examples can be better than the originals found in nature. The uses for these newer resins is expanding daily, which means you can be at the forefront of something new and exciting. It is possible to embed almost anything into epoxy resin and this has led to the new and exciting development of resin photo jewellery. This is catching on like wild-fire, due to 22
