4 SANTA CLARA LAW, A LETTER FROM THE SBA PRESIDENT Grant Atkinson SCU Law Friends, I hope everyone had a safe and fun time at the Halloween Bar Review PRESIDENT, STUDENT BAR ASSOCIATION J.D. Candidate, 2013 Santa Clara University School of Law While the Home Stretch of this semester may be looming around the corner, the SBA is pleased to offer some positive fuel to help you successfully charge through the finish line. First, the Bay Area Law Student Association is hosting an evening of comedy in San Francisco on November 8th at 8:00 PM with the stand-up group, Comedians at Law. This unique event is an awesome opportunity to get out in the city, have some laughs, make some new law student friends from other schools, and network with local attorneys. Tickets for this event go on sale this Monday, October 29 in Bannan lounge from 12:00-1:00 PM. Tickets are $10 each, and we only have 50 tickets available, so be sure to get yours before we sell out. Second, next week, as part of Stress Relief Week, the SBA will be hosting a night of Dodgeball in the Malley Fitness Center, on November 7 at 8:00 PM. Finally, keep your eyes out for adorable puppies on the lawn between Heafey and Bannan next Thursday afternoon, as the SBA will be hosting Dog Therapy at 12:00 PM on November 8th. Do not make any travel or vaca on plans during this me period. The Law School will not reschedule finals due to travel plans. Exams will be rescheduled only for extraordinary and compelling reasons beyond the student s control. Please write your exam dates on your calendar and do not schedule anything during your exam period. Stress Relief Week Next week the SBA will be hos ng several events to help students relieve stress. 6 Upcoming Community Service Opportunities VABANC/KGACLC Legal Clinic VABANC, in collaboration with Santa Clara Law's KGACLC, provides pro bono legal clinics in San Jose, CA. Volunteer attorneys provide free legal information in a number of areas (including divorce/family law, bankruptcy, domestic violence/restraining orders, business disputes, consumer issues, immigration, etc.) to those in need. ALA Monthly Immigration Clinic VALS, in conjunction with APALSA and other student organizations, is working with Asian Law Alliance (ALA) in San Jose, CA to provide volunteers for ALA's immigration clinic this year. This is a great opportunity for community service or for those interested in immigration law. Volunteers will provide immigration screening and application assistance at ALA's monthly immigration clinic. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least two clinics per academic year. 9 Fall 2012 Social Justice Diversity Lecture Thursday, November 1 at 4 p.m. in the Art & Science, Wiegand Room Jerry Kang is professor of law at University of California, Los Angeles, and the inaugural Korea Times-Hankook Ilbo Chair in Korean American Studies. A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College (physics) and the Harvard Law School, Professor Kang writes on race and communications, and their intersection. On race, he is one of the leading legal experts on implicit bias and stereotype threat. He has helped launch the interdisciplinary behavioral realism movement, which calls on the law to be more responsive to what the mind sciences have revealed about human behavior, especially in the context of interracial interactions. His work is available at jerrykang.net. Jerry Kang University California, Los Angeles School of Law Thinking Race: Implicit Bias and Stereotype Threat Wine and Cheese Reception immediately following the lecture.
