2 SBA BOARD From The Editor: Gemma Daggs, President Margie Dellegrotti and Daniel Zazueta, VPS (Full-Time) Marina Wiant, VP (Part-Time) Chris Rusca, Treasurer Socrates believed that the soul was something to be developed and cultivated. He believed focusing on virtues and self-development was the best way to live. I think that he would agree with Diderot, passions elevate the soul. What better way do improve ourselves than by living out our passions? Passions, whatever they may be, are what drove most of us to law school. The interests between us are diverse, ranging from human rights to intellectual property. Regardless of whether you re interested in pursuing public interest law or working for a corporate firm, law school has a way of wrapping us up in the immediate. It s so easy to forget the forces that brought us here and be forced to kick into survival mode. This past weekend was PIPS (Public Interest/ Public Service Sector) Day at Hastings. I was thinking about how easy it would be to take the first job that comes along and start planning for the summer. It would be even easier to chase a paying job that was out of my realm of interest. I hope that I will work for the job I want this summer, not settle for the job that s easiest to get. I hope to remember my passions and motivations for entering law school and continue to follow my dreams, not the pay-check. It s hard. It s easy to be distracted and overwhelmed, especially with my daily needs and debt. I feel like I would eventually regret it if I did not follow my heart. I will continue to search for the profession that will allow me to live out my passions and dreams -- be it for free or for a fee. Remind me, will you? 4 THE CENTER FOR GLOBAL LAW AND POLICY PRESENTS A SPECIAL LECTURE BY: KYONG-WHAN AHN CHAIRPERSON OF THE NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION, APPOINTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA EMERGING ISSUES IN HUMAN RIGHTS WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, NOON TO 1 PM, BANNAN 142 INTRODUCTION BY DEAN DONALD POLDEN We are honored to have Chairman Ahn as our guest at Santa Clara. He holds a JD from our law school, an LLM from the University of Pennsylvania, and an LLB from Seoul National University. Since 2006, he has been Deputy Chair of the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions, a worldwide association of national human rights institutions. Chairman Ahn has taught at Seoul National University since 1987 and was College Dean in He has taught and given lectures widely in the US and abroad, and is a prolific legal scholar in both Korean and English. He was a founding chairman of one of the leading NGOs in Korea, and is actively engaged as a world leader in human rights. Lunch will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there.
