I hope 2016 is a prosperous and joyous year for you and your family. I trust each of you had a Merry Christmas and made time for family and friends during this busy season and, most of all, on its true meaning. The Capital District is going strong with approximately 690 members to date; it sure would be nice to reach and maintain that 700 mark. I want to challenge each of you to reach out to one non-member and turn that around. On November 13th the Capital District was proud to sponsor its annual Family Night. This year the event was held at Sease s Farm in Lexington. The 135 attendees enjoyed the Corn Maze, good food, a hayride, adult tricycle racing and a variety of other activities. A special thanks to all who joined us. The Capital District was able to put this event on with no outside sponsorship; we thought it to be a nice gesture to give something back to the folks that support us throughout the year. The WEASC will hold its Planning Retreat on February 11th &12th at Hickory Knob State encouraged to attend. Watch the State website for more details (scwaters.org) or contact the SCEC is right around the corner, March 13th- 15th, and this year promises to be stronger than ever with an opening session you don t want to miss. If you have never attended in the past, this is the time! Additional information can be found on the State website (scwaters.org). On January 21st the Capital District will hold its annual awards meeting at the Town of Lexington. This is the opportunity to recognize our coworkers/peers for their Come help us salute the greatness that is the Capital District! I have the opportunity to witness people at work that make this organization what it is--like a giant iceberg, what we see on the surface is only the tip of what is transpiring below. The spirit of volunteerism is the foundation smoothly the WEASC operates. For the time, effort and energy you folks give, I am grateful. I hope to see each of you in Lexington on January 21st. Until then stay warm, keep in touch and recognize greatness. Steve

5 Capital District Newsletter January 2016 Page 5 Technical Corner December 10, 2015 Still Standing Guard Shortly before Christmas of 2006 (yes, I can remember back that far), I saw a news story on television that was refreshingly positive- to recognize many of its public servants who were on duty Christmas Day. So, a band of volunteers got together, baked some goodies and distributed them to the Police, Fire and EMS service employees. I was touched by this story because good news like this rarely makes it to the evening news and because the folks that had to work on this holiday were recognized their community. Great job! But, since you are a water professional, there is a possibility that you or someone you know were also working Christmas Day that year, but not just at the Fire or Police departments. Someone had to treat and distribute potable water, then collect and treat the used water prior to reintroduction to the environment. We know that as environmental professionals, we stand guard 24/7 too. You get the point: water and wastewater utility personnel were conspicuously missing from the news story. We deserved Christmas goodies, too! About that same year, The British Medical Journal polled their readership with the question, what is the greatest medical advance since 1840? While competing readership (mostly doctors) such as X-ray imaging, antibiotics and the eradication of smallpox, the winner was sanitation. SANITATION! That s what we do! And we trace our heritage to landmark events like the London cholera epidemic of 1854 where Dr. John Snow traced the outbreak to a contaminated well on Broad Street. Since then, the science of clean water has advanced to the point where we now know that every part of chlorine, every milliwatt-second of UV radiation, every part of aluminum sulfate and gallon of water pumped in the right direction has a direct impact on the heath of those who consume the water or enjoy it in nature. I hope you enjoyed the holidays. If you had to work on Christmas Day or New Year s Day, I hope you understood why you were there. You had guard duty those days someone had to do it. Now I must put down my pen and pick up some kitchen utensils I have goodies to bake! Thank you for your vigilance! Jim Matthews, Jim Matthews On Line Environmental, Inc.
