1 Water Environment Association of South Carolina District Three VOL. 29, Number 2 July 2016 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Chair Bob Freeman Alliance Consulting Engineers, Inc. (843) bfreeman@alliancece.com Chair Elect Clint Riley AECOM (803) clint.riley@aecom.com 1st Vice Chair Chris Waddell American Engineering Consultants, Inc. (803) cwaddell@aec-sc.com Chair s Column Summertime has arrived in South Carolina and boy oh boy is it hot already! The humidity seemed to come all at once this year over a week, as opposed to slowly stepping into it. Y all know the type of humidity that feels like you can wear the air as an extra shirt. That is what late May and June have felt like this year. During the summer months, I often think about the safety of our water and wastewater system operators, construction workers, and anyone who spends a large amount of daylight hours outside. These folks should take multiple breaks during physical activities and stay hydrated. Once moderate risk level precautions for heat related illnesses and deaths are recommended to be followed. Please keep this is mind during the summer months. Our last District Meeting was held on May 19th at EdVenture Children s Museum on the bank of the Congaree River in downtown Columbia. I would like to give a special thanks to our sponsors, including the City of Columbia s 2nd Vice Chair Rick Hiers SC Department of Health & Environmental Control (803) hiersrs@dhec.sc.gov Past Chair Steve Mulherin Richland County Utilities (803) mulherins@rcgov.us Water Works Division, the City of Columbia s Metro Wastewater Treatment Plant, P&S Construction, and PASCON, LLC. Without the support of our sponsors, the Capital District would not be able to support our membership with the goal of education, fellowship, and networking with our colleagues in the water industry. The technical sessions were informative and educational. If you missed out on Tour, then you missed a wealth of information from Mr. Willie Smith with Lockhart Power. Touring a facility that has been in service since the late 1800 s was really neat to see in person. The meal was catered by Parklane Seafood and was delicious. Please mark your calendars for the following dates: the Capital District Golf Tournament will be held on Tuesday August 30, 2016 at Cobblestone Park Golf Club; and the Pine Island Mid-Year Meeting will be held on Thursday September 1, 2016 at SCE&G s Pine Island Club on Lake Murray. This year promises to have another Secretary Erin Daugherty AECOM (803) erin.daugherty@aecom.com Treasurer Donna West Joint Municipal Water & Sewer Commission (803) dwest@lcjmwsc.com State Association (803) great technical program, followed by the Capital District Meeting. Family Night will be held in November. Please go to: Please be sure to join us at our next District Meeting in Newberry on Thursday, July 21st at the Firehouse Conference Center, located just behind the Newberry session begins at 2:00 PM (further followed by social hour, the meal and our district meeting. Lastly, a special thanks to the Scholarship Committee for the newly launched Capital District Scholarship, which may award up to three $2,500 scholarships to Capital District Members and family members. Details are available at: www. thecapitaldistrict.org. If you have any input or suggestions to make the WEASC Capital District better, please feel free to pass them along at bfreeman@alliancece.com.
