2 ATMS SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES TRAUMA & MILITARY SURGERY CONFERENCE Harrogate, Wednesday 30th April 2014 Lieutenant Colonel Ben Banerjee MBBS MD FRCS (Gen Surg) DipMD RAMC (V) Banerjee joined the Army Reserves in 1990 whilst a medical student at Newcastle University. He embarked on surgical career completing his MD thesis in 1998 and his vascular surgical speciality training in 2004 culminating in his appointment as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at City Hospitals Sunderland. He is also a Clinical Honorary Senior Lecturer for Newcastle University Medical School with a lead role in undergraduate education. From the military point of view, he has been deployed to Bosnia, Kosovo and three times to Afghanistan. This last deployment saw him boarded and serve as the first reservist Deployed Medical Director. The last seven years have seen him take a significant role at AMSTC and MOST in establishing and maintaining the standards of deployed hospital healthcare. His current appointment is as the Second-in-Command of 201 (Northern) Field Hospital. He is married to Helen with two children, Luke and Jasmine. Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Bowley FRCS (Gen Surg) RAMC Doug Bowley is a military general and colorectal surgeon, first appointed as Honorary Consultant Surgeon to the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust in As well as his military surgical responsibilities, Doug s clinical interests include colorectal surgery, emergency general surgery and general paediatric surgery. Recently appointed as Chair of his Trust s Quality & Safety Committee, he is Surgical Adviser to the Director General of the Army Medical Service and founder of the Association of Trauma & Military Surgery. An enthusiastic surgical trainer, Doug has produced >100 peer-reviewed publications and is co-editor of the textbook Fundamentals of Surgical Practice. Lieutenant Colonel Ngozi Dufty MBChB, MRCP, DTM&H, DipGUM, DFSRH, MCGI RAMC Lieutenant Colonel Ngozi Dufty is the Head of the Armed Forces Sexual Health and HIV Service. She is a Consultant Physician in sexual health and HIV medicine and completed her specialist training in Birmingham and London before returning to Birmingham where the military service is now centralised. She co-ordinates the military service in the UK, Northern Ireland, Cyprus and Afghanistan as well as the 24- hour on-call service where advice is needed for troops based throughout the world. With the many changes to Defence, her focus is now on restructuring the military Sexual Health and HIV service and implementing a training and education programme to enable accessibility to sexual health services for all serving personnel regardless of their geographical location. Captain (Dr) Eric Elster MD FACS Dr Eric Elster received his undergraduate and medical school degrees from the University of South Florida in Tampa as a recipient of the U.S. Navy s Health Professionals Scholarship Program. Upon graduation, Dr Elster completed a general surgery residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Dr Elster served as ship s surgeon aboard the USS Kitty Hawk while stationed in the Persian Gulf. Upon returning, Dr Elster completed a solid organ transplantation fellowship at the National Institutes of Health and then was 2
3 stationed at the Naval Medical Research Center in Silver Spring, MD, where he directed a translational research programme focused on the development of improved diagnostics and therapies for serious traumatic injuries, transplantation and advanced operative imaging. CAPT Elster now serves as the 3 rd Chairman of the Norman M. Rich Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences as well as a Professor of Surgery and Director of the Surgical Critical Care Initiative, a joint military and civilian program developing clinical decision support tools for critically ill patients. Dr Elster was last deployed as a surgeon and Director of Surgical Services at the NATO Role 3 Military Medical Unit in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Dr Elster is a member of numerous organisations including a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Society of University Surgeons, American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the Southern Surgical Association and the American Surgical Association. Dr Elster has published over 100 scientific manuscripts and received numerous research grants across all aspects of surgery. Mr Graeme Groom MA MB FRCS Graeme Groom trained in trauma and orthopaedics in the army and in Nottingham, and was appointed Consultant at Queen Elizabeth Military Hospital, Woolwich, in There he started a Limb Reconstruction service, introducing the Ilizarov method, and developing a multi-disciplinary approach. He moved to King s College Hospital in 1993 where there is now a substantial team undertaking limb reconstruction work, and caring for wounded soldiers since 2007 in close collaboration with RCDM, Birmingham and DMRC, Headley Court. He is trustee of the KCH Limb Reconstruction Trust ( which plugs the gaps in NHS provision, and IDEALS ( which is active in many parts of the world but currently involved in trauma training in the Middle East. Graeme is an Upper Warden of the Innholders Company. Professor David B Hoyt MD FACS Professor Hoyt received a BA degree with honours from Amherst College, followed by an MD degree from Case Western Reserve University in From 1976 to 1984, Dr Hoyt was a Surgical Resident and Research Fellow at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and Scripps Immunology Institute. He joined the faculty at UCSD and immediately became involved in their Trauma Service, where his role as Director lasted from 1989 to In 1995, he was appointed Professor of Surgery and was awarded The Monroe E Trout Professorship in Surgery at UCSD (1996). In 2006, Dr Hoyt was appointed to the position of Chairman for the Department of Surgery at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and the John E Connolly Professor of Surgery. In 2008, Dr Hoyt was also appointed Executive Vice Dean for the UCI School of Medicine. In January 2010, he was appointed Executive Director of the American College of Surgeons and remains Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the UCI. Dr Hoyt has distinguished himself within the Department of Surgery, having delivered numerous named lectures, received multiple, significant awards from his colleagues as well as scientific organisations, while serving in positions of leadership. He continues to serve as an advisor for many graduate students. Dr Hoyt is a member of the American Surgical Association, Surgical Biology Club, Western Surgical Association and Society of University Surgeons, amongst others. He is currently the immediate Past President of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Past President of the Society of General Surgeons of San Diego, Past President of the Shock Society, Past Chairman of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and Past Medical Director of Trauma at the American College of Surgeons. He has been a visiting professor at a large number of institutions nationally and internationally and is an Editorial Board Member of six journals. Dr Hoyt consistently receives significant public research funding and is the author of over 500 publications. He was recently awarded GUEST SPEAKERS 3

Surgeon Captain M J Midwinter CBE QHS BMedSci(Hons) DipAppStats MD FRCS(Eng) FRCS(Gen) Royal Navy Surgeon Captain Mark Midwinter qualified from University of Newcastle in 1984 and trained in General Surgery with a sub-specialty in Upper Gastrointestinal surgery in Newcastle and Manchester. He obtained his higher degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne for research in pancreatic disease. He was appointed Consultant Surgeon in Portsmouth with an honorary contract at the University of Southampton before moving to Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. In 2006 he was appointed as the Defence Professor of Surgery which is a Royal College of Surgeons of England appointment in conjunction with the Surgeon General. In 2009 he was appointed Honorary Professor School of Medicine, Swansea. He has seen active service in the former Yugoslavia, Iraq and Afghanistan. Surgeon Captain Midwinter s research interests include the spectrum of Military Trauma and Surgery, particular current topics are Thromboelastography and the Management of Trauma Associated Coagulopathy, the effects of blast and ischaemia on vascular endothelium, platelets and neutrophils and microvesicles dervived from these cells. He is also engaged with research collaborations examining the effect of blast and inflammation in the brain at Imperial College London and role of gut serosa in inflammation at University of Manchester. Surgeon Captain Midwinter is the National Institute of Health Research Centre for Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology theme lead for Acute Care, member of The Healing Foundation Burns Research Centre / Burns Collaborative and NIHR HTC Trauma Innovation (Birmingham). Surgeon Captain Midwinter has been awarded CBE and appointed QHS by Her Majesty The Queen. Dr Comfort Momoh MA MBE Dr Momoh is a Female Genital Mutilation/Public Health Specialist at Guy s & St. Thomas NHS Foundation Trust. Originally a midwife, she now specialises in the study and treatment of female genital mutilation (FGM). Originally from Nigeria, in 1997 she set up the African Well Women s Clinic at St. Thomas Hospital, London, dedicated to caring for women affected by FGM. In 1999, she worked as an adviser to the World Health Organization on the issue of FGM, and in 2001 represented the UK at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Dr Momoh is the editor of Female Genital Mutilation (2005). In 2008, she was awarded a MBE for services to women s healthcare, and an honorary doctorate from Middlesex University. She holds a MA from the University of London, and is an honorary lecturer there. Dr Momoh and her team treat up to 350 women for reversal procedures each year, despite FGM being illegal in the UK since She has written extensively on the subject and has advised governmental policy in the UK and around the world. Surgeon Commander Christopher Streets BSc (Hons) MD FRCS (Gen Surg) Royal Navy Christopher Streets was appointed as Consultant in Oesophagogastric Surgery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary in He qualified from the University of Bristol in 1992 and undertook training in the South West and Northern deaneries. He obtained his higher degree from the University of Bristol for research into gastro-oesophageal reflux disease performed at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Having seen active 4
5 service in the Former Yugoslavia, Iraq and Afghanistan, Christopher is the incumbent Royal Navy Consultant Advisor in Surgery; he is Defence Consultant Adviser in Surgery, designate. He has a particular interest in military and civilian trauma training. Janet Veitch OBE Janet Veitch is a non-executive director of the End Violence against Women Coalition. She works as a consultant for statutory and voluntary organisations, specialising in public policy on women s rights, particularly in relation to violence against women. She is a serving member of the Economic and Social Research Council grants committee. She wrote the third edition of Making the Grade, an independent audit of government work on violence against women, and was part of the consortium that developed London s first Violence against Women Strategy. For 10 years, she worked for the UK Ministers for Women, inter alia taking the lead on gender mainstreaming across Whitehall. She was a member of the UK state delegation to the UN Commission on the Status of Women , and wrote What s Beijing Got to Do with Me, on the UK s obligations under the UN Beijing Platform for Action. She was Director of the Women s National Commission, the Government s advisory body on women, and was responsible for producing the UK shadow report to CEDAW. She set up the Violence Against Women And Girls Group to advise Ministers. She was commissioned by the Home Office to consult survivors of domestic violence across England and Wales, producing the report, Unlocking the Secret. Janet was Visiting Professor of Gender Studies, University of Madrid Complutense (2004), and was a visiting expert on the FCO s Strategic programme in China in She was awarded the OBE for services to women s rights in Dr Catherine White OBE MB ChB MRCGP FFFLM FRCOG DCH Dr White is the Clinical Director of the Sexual Assault Referral Centre at St Mary s Hospital in Manchester and has worked in the field of forensic medicine since 1995, specialising in the examination of women, men and children where there has been an allegation of rape or sexual assault. She is a guest lecturer on the Judicial Studies Board Serious Sexual Offences seminars and the Family Courts. In 2006, 2008 and 2010 she was sponsored by UNICEF and CEOP (Child Exploitation Online Protection) to provide training in Cambodia. She has provided similar training in Moldova in In 2013, Dr White was appointed by the United Nations as an International Consultant Expert in Sexual violence. Dr White was the Vice President for the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine (CFM) from 2010 to She is the Sexual Offences Lead for the FFLM and a member of the Faculty s Academic Committee and Forensic Science Committee. Dr White is the Deputy Chief Examiner for the Membership of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine, responsible for Sexual Offences Medicine). Dr White is on the ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) Rape Working Group and on the National SARC Steering Group. In 2006, she was a Guest Editor for the Journal of Clinical Forensic Medicine and is regularly requested to peer review articles submitted to the journal (renamed Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine). She has published widely on the subject of sexual offences and is the author of Sexual Assault, A Forensic Physician s Practice Guide. Dr White is the Course Lead for FMERSA, which was the first University affiliated course in the UK on sexual assault examinations. This is a two module course on the principles and practice of the forensic medical examination for victims of rape and sexual assault and it delivers intensive and practically focused training by professionals working in the field. For her contribution to improving the plight of sexual assault victims and increasing understanding around the whole issue of sexual violence, Catherine was awarded an OBE in the 2014 New Year s Honours List.
