1 2018 US-Ireland Research Innovation Awards Assessment Panel Dick Ahlstrom is the former Science Editor of The Irish Times. He has won a number of awards for his science writing. Dick is a member of the Life and Medical Science Committee of the Royal Irish Academy and the Academy published his book on Irish science, Flashes of Brilliance. He is a Fellow of the British Association for the Advancement of Science and is a Life Member of the Royal Dublin Society. Dick holds degrees from Temple University, Philadelphia and from University College Dublin. Dick Ahlstrom Bebhinn Behan is Innovation Manager at KPMG Ireland, responsible for service innovation programme within the firm and advising clients on innovation infrastructure. Prior to her current position, Bebhinn worked at An Post, Dublin Airport Authority and Aer Rianta International specialising in business model innovation, new product and service development, consumer experience and process improvement. Bebhinn holds a BSc in Valuations and Economics from Dublin Institute of Technology and an MSc in Project Management from UCD Smurfit Business School.. Bebhinn Behan

2 Dr. Jennifer Brennan is Director of Research, Development and Innovation at the Technological Higher Education Alliance (THEA). Prior to joining THEA, Jennifer was Ireland s National Contact Point for the European the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) funding programme. She represents Ireland s interests in the MSCA programme as National Delegate to the MSCA Programme Committee. Jennifer has a background in research and has worked in academia in the UK, USA and Ireland. She is particularly interested in researcher career development, gender in research, and responsible research & innovation and is the Deputy Chair of the National Forum on Research Integrity. Dr Jennifer Brennan Dr Alison Campbell is Director of Knowledge Transfer Ireland (KTI), based at Enterprise Ireland. KTI is the national office, responsible for the promotion, development and management of Ireland s knowledge transfer system. Dr Campbell is Chair-elect of AUTM, the US headquartered association for research commercialisation. She is a founder of the Global Alliance of Technology Transfer Professionals (ATTP). In 2010 Dr Campbell was awarded an OBE in recognition of her contribution to Knowledge Transfer. Alison Campbell

3 Siobhán Clarke is a Professor in the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin. She joined Trinity in 2000, having previously worked for over ten years at IBM. Her current research focus is on software engineering models for the provision of smart and dynamic software services to urban stakeholders. She is a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Principal Investigator, and the founding Director of Future Cities, the Trinity Centre for Smart and Sustainable Cities. She leads the School s Distributed Systems Group and was elected Fellow of Trinity College Dublin in Siobhán Clarke Mark Gantly is a Senior R&D Director at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. He is s responsible for engineering operations in HPE s recently launched OneSphere business. Mark is First VP of the board of the American Chamber of Commerce and also chairs the Chamber s RDI working group. He is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin (mathematics, engineering science) and also holds a Diploma in Business Strategy from the IMI. He is a Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering. Mark Gantly Professor Jane Grimson is a Fellow Emerita and Professor of Health Informatics at Trinity College Dublin. She holds a Master and Doctorate in Computer Science from the Universities of Toronto and Edinburgh, respectively. At Trinity College Dublin she severed as Dean of Engineering and of Research, as well as Vice-Provost from Professor Grimson is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Irish Academy of Engineering, Engineers Ireland, the Irish Computer Society and a Member of the Royal Irish Academy. She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws by NUI Galway in 2017 in recognition of her services to gender equality in higher education in Ireland. Jane Grimson

4 Leonard Hobbs is Director, Research and Innovation at Trinity College Dublin. The former Director of Global Public Affairs at Intel Ireland, he joined Intel in 1991, where he held various roles in process engineering before establishing Intel Ireland s Silicon Research team in 2008, working with Irish universities and European consortia He holds an honours degree in Electrical Engineering from University College Cork and a Masters degree from the NMRC (now called Tyndall). From 1988 to 1991 he worked as a research scientist at IMEC, in Leuven, Belgium. Leonard Hobbs Peter McHugh Panel Chair Peter McHugh holds a BE in Mechanical Engineering from UCG (1987), and an MSc (1990) and PhD (1992) in Mechanics of Solids from Brown University, Providence, USA. He joined NUI Galway in 1991, where he is currently Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Dean of the College of Engineering and Informatics. His research is focused on fundamental developments and applications of computational and experimental methods in biomechanics, tissue mechanics and medical implants and devices. He has taken a leadership role in the development of biomedical engineering in Ireland through high quality and prolific research and publication output, and undergraduate and graduate education programme generation. He has received numerous awards, including membership of the Royal Irish Academy (2011), the Silver Medal of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland (Section of Bioengineering) in 2011, the Presidential Nominee Fellowship of Engineers Ireland in (2009), and the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (1995). He served as Science Secretary of the Royal Irish Academy and is currently the Policy and International Relations Secretary..

5 Professor Barry O'Sullivan is an award-winning academic working in the field of artificial intelligence for more than two decades. He is the founding Director of the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at University College Cork, and a Principal Investigator at the Confirm Centre for Smart Manufacturing which is based at the University of Limerick. Professor O'Sullivan is a Fellow and current Deputy President of the European Artificial Intelligence Association (EurAI), one of the world s largest AI associations with over 4500 members in over 30 countries. He was President of the International Association for Constraint Programming from Barry O Sullivan In 2013 he received a UCC Leadership Award and won the Association for Constraint Programming Distinguished Service Award in He was named Science Foundation Ireland Researcher of the Year for 2016, UCC Researcher of the Year in 2017, and elected to membership of the Royal Irish Academy in 2017, Ireland s highest academic accolade. Professor O Sullivan has been involved in winning over 200 million in research funding, of which approximately 30 million has directly supported his research activities at UCC. In addition to his academic work, Professor O'Sullivan runs his own AI consulting firm, AI Machina, and is SOSV s AI Expert-in-Residence across its international set of startup accelerators that fund approximately 150 start-up companies each year. Ena Prosser Dr Ena Prosser is a Partner in Fountain Healthcare Partners, a life sciences venture capital firm based in Ireland and New York. In this role, Ena has led investment in companies including NeRRe Therapeutics Ltd, KaNDy Therapeutics Ltd, Genable Technologies Ltd (sold to Spark Therapeutics) and Trino Therapeutics Ltd. A biotechnology PhD by training, she also has a broad background in international alliance and intellectual property management. She has led due diligence projects on technologies and products within the Specialty Pharma, diagnostic, device and biotechnology areas. Dr Prosser is a member of the advisory board of Knowledge Transfer Ireland (KTI) and has previously served as a member of the Irish Government Innovation Taskforce in Intellectual Property, ICSTI, as a board member for HRB, SFI and Fighting Blindness Ireland. She is an Adjunct Professor at University College Dublin and a member of the Institute of Directors.

6 Lisa Taggart is Director within the Corporate Banking division of Ulster Bank. Along with her team, Lisa works to meet all banking needs of corporate entities across a wide number of sectors. She is currently part of the Ulster Bank and RBS Brexit Response Management Groups and is also actively involved in the bank s mentoring programme. Lisa has spent her career working in Financial Services. Prior to joining Ulster Bank in 2010 she worked with a leading Irish stockbroking and investment firm, and another Irish bank prior to that. Lisa holds a BComm from UCD, a MBS from UCC, is ACCA qualified, and a member of the Institute of Bankers and she also serves as a Governor of the National Maternity Hospital at Holles Street, Dublin.
