1 PLENARY SESSION 9:00 10:00 Nita Jain MD, FRCPC Katrina Harry LLB Serena Kullar MSW, RSW Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, University of British Dr. Nita Jain is a clinical assistant professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of British. She practises general pediatrics in the community and is a consultant pediatrician with the child protection team at BC Children s Hospital. She also works in this capacity with the suspected child abuse and neglect team at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Dr. Jain is actively involved with resident and medical student teaching both in her clinic and on the clinical teaching units at BC Children s Hospital. Lead Counsel, Parents Legal Centre, Legal Services Society of BC Ms. Katrina Harry was called to the bar 10 years ago and before coming to Vancouver to practise, she spent time practising throughout other regions in BC. She has spent most of her career focusing on child protection law, but also has experience practising in family law and Aboriginal law, writing and reviewing publications and guest lecturing. She has represented parents and extended family members who are involved with social workers due to child protection concerns. Protecting at-risk children: medical and legal perspectives Social Worker, Fir Square Combined Care Unit, BC Women s Hospital & Health Centre Ms. Serena Kullar began her social work career in 2004 with the Ministry of Children and Family Development as a child protection social worker. In 2009, she became a child protection consultant and subsequently a child protection team leader with Vancouver Aboriginal Child and Family Services Society. In 2012, Ms. Kullar joined Fir Square Combined Unit, a maternity unit for women struggling with substance use, and currently serves as a social worker. Ms. Kullar is also currently working on her PhD in social work through McGill University, focusing on mothers with complex trauma and their involvement with Child Protection Services. 2 COLLEGE CASE STUDIES 10:30 12:00 Patricia Bowles Senior Communications Specialist Ms. Patricia Bowles is an awardwinning communications professional with expertise in public affairs, media and government relations, advocacy and marketing. She has held senior executive positions with TELUS and Westcoast Energy and also served as a political and policy advisor for the federal and provincial governments. Most recently, she was the director of communications and education at the BC Securities Commission. Prior to joining the commission in 2006, Ms. Bowles was a senior consultant for BC s Ministry of Attorney General providing advice on messaging for trials in BC s Supreme and Provincial courts, in particular the Air India and Pickton trials. Before moving to BC, Ms. Bowles was an owner and director of McLaren McCann Advertising in Toronto where she consulted for a number of clients in the health-care field. Graeme Keirstead LLB Chief Legal Counsel, College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Mr. Graeme Keirstead graduated from the University of New Brunswick Law School in 1991 and was called to the Bar in He worked in small firm settings before joining The Law Society of British in 1999 as a staff lawyer where he worked for 15 years holding various leadership positions. Mr. Keirstead joined the College in Mr. Keirstead has spoken to groups of lawyers and other professional audiences on topics from how to avoid complaints to how to develop your own succession plan. Patrick D. Rowe MD, CCFP(EM), FCFP Department Head, Emergency Medicine, University Hospital of Northern British Trauma Director, Northern Health Dr. Patrick Rowe is an emergency physician practising at the University Hospital of Northern BC in Prince George, BC. He has been a member of the Prince George medical community since Dr. Rowe has served in a number of leadership positions, including a term as president of the Prince George emergency group, as a member of the Department of Emergency Medicine Advisory Committee and the Northern Health Critical Care Council. Recently, he completed the Physician Leadership Program at the UBC Sauder School of Business. Dr. Rowe has been a member of the College Board since 2013 and currently holds the position of treasurer. 3 PLENARY SESSION 1:30 2:30 Jeff Kerrie MD, BSc, MSc (Bioethics), FRCPC Clinical Instructor, Community Internal Medicine, University of British Dr. Jeff Kerrie undertook his medical training at the University of Manitoba before completing residency in internal medicine at the University of British (UBC). He has recently completed a master s degree in clinical bioethics from Clarkson University/ Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York that he intends to apply on the wards and to higher-level policy development. Dr. Kerrie practises as a general internist in Victoria and Vancouver, working as UBC faculty on the teaching unit at Royal Jubilee Hospital. His other medical interests include bedside ultrasound, medicine in atypical environments (including dive/hyperbaric medicine), and international health. He participated in the Ebola crisis in 2015 as a member of a research team from Oxford University trialing novel treatments in Liberia and Sierra Leone. MB, CCFP Deputy Registrar, College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Dr. Ailve McNestry obtained her medical degree from University College in Dublin, Ireland and completed her training in Newfoundland and Labrador. She arrived in BC in 1988, taking on the role as medical director of the Prince George Regional Hospital, before settling in Vancouver to open a family practice. Prior to joining the College in 2011, Dr. McNestry served as a medical advisor and medical manager with WorkSafeBC. As deputy registrar of the College, she is responsible for the BC Methadone Program, the Prescription Review Program, and the monitoring department. Speaker Profiles 4

Dr. Saunders has practised emergency medicine full time for the past 40 years in Victoria, Vancouver and Burnaby, and has been a coroner and consultant to the BC Coroners Service since MD, FRCPC Coroner and Medical Consultant, Medical Unit, BC Coroners Service The community physician and WorkSafeBC everything you always wanted to know Session 1 Session 2 3:00 3:40 3:50 4:30 Peter Rothfels MD, ASAM Chief Medical Officer and Director, Clinical Services, Worker and Employer Services Division, WorkSafeBC Dr. Peter Rothfels obtained his medical degree from the University of Alberta. After spending six years practising emergency medicine in the US, he spent 13 years as a solo family physician in a small rural community in Nova Scotia. In 2000, Dr. Rothfels relocated to Victoria and after doing locums for two years, joined WorkSafeBC as a medical advisor in 2002, where he now serves as chief medical officer and director of clinical services. Dr. Rothfels has a particular interest in chronic pain and addiction medicine. He has been asked to speak at numerous conferences and outreach seminars, on the interplay of chronic pain, opioids, and addictions. He also has a keen interest in education, and speaks frequently on the subjects of disability management and the physician role in prevention of needless workplace disability. Speaker Profiles 5

6 WORKSHOPS 3:30-4:30 Alison Leaney Leanne Lange Natasha Holdal MSW, RSW Provincial Coordinator, Vulnerable Adults Community Response, Services to Adults, Public Guardian and Trustee Ms. Alison Leaney is a registered social worker at the Public Guardian and Trustee of BC where she has spent 20 years (except for a twoyear leave to work on the National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly s Elder Abuse Knowledge to Action Project) in implementation of BC s adult guardianship legislation (including abuse/neglect law). Along with Ms. Leanne Lange and others, Ms. Leaney finalized the Decision Tree: How to Assist an Adult Who is Abused, Neglected or Self-Neglecting and led the development of a series of explanatory videos about the decision tree. Ms. Leaney was recently awarded the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal for her work to create a coordinated response to adult abuse and neglect in BC and Canada. Clinical Specialist, Adult Abuse & Neglect, Fraser Health Ms. Leanne Lange has been employed by Fraser Health as the clinical specialist, adult abuse and neglect for the last nine years. In this role she leads Fraser Health s response to adult protectionrelated issues across the region. She provides consultation and support to staff working in hospitals, community programs, and residential care who respond to situations of abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults. She also develops resources and provides education to staff. Finally, she assists to advocate for solutions to system level issues which affect vulnerable adults. Ms. Lange is also responsible for managing the Certificate of Incapability Process in Fraser Health. Ms. Lange was instrumental in the development of the Decision Tree: How to Assist an Adult Who is Abused, Neglected or Self-Neglecting. Detective/Constable, Elder Abuse Unit, Vancouver Police Department Detective/Constable Natasha Holdal has been employed as a Vancouver police officer for the past 13 years. The majority of her career has been spent working as a patrol officer in the City of Vancouver. She has spent the last year and a half working as a detective in the Domestic Violence and Criminal Harassment Elder Abuse Unit.
