3 KEYNOTE SPEAKER David B. Hoyt, MD, FACS: American College of Surgeons Dr. David Hoyt is the Executive Director of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). In this role, Dr. Hoyt oversees nationally and internationally recognized educational and quality programs, including education and training for surgeons and surgery residents, and quality improvement programs including the Committee on Trauma, Commission on Cancer, National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and Bariatric Surgery Center Network. Dr. Hoyt is the former medical director of ACS s Trauma Programs and served as Executive Vice-Dean of the University of California, Irvine s School of Medicine; Chairman of the Department of Surgery; and the John E. Connolly Professor of Surgery at the University of California, Irvine. An international lecturer, Dr. Hoyt is the author of over 480 book chapters, journal articles and abstracts. HOST/MODERATOR A. Brent Eastman, MD, FACS: Scripps Health A general, vascular and trauma surgeon and leader in trauma and emergency surgical care, Dr. A. Brent Eastman is Chief Medical Officer and Corporate Senior Vice President of Scripps Health. He is also N. Paul Whittier Chair of Trauma for Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, and the past Chair of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Board of Regents and President-Elect of the ACS. Dr. Eastman serves on the Scripps Health executive cabinet, where he provides clinical expertise on system-wide issues, leads key physician groups and oversees clinical quality, graduate medical education programs, disaster preparedness, clinical research and other key issues across the Scripps system. He, along with Dr. Hoyt, is one of the several founders of the San Diego trauma system regarded worldwide as a model and has helped develop trauma systems throughout the U.S., England, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Mexico, South Africa and India.

4 PANELISTS (in order of appearance) Chris Van Gorder, FACHE: Scripps Health As President and CEO of Scripps Health since 2000, Chris Van Gorder has been instrumental in positioning Scripps among the nation s foremost health care institutions. Now he is leading the restructure of the $2.3 billion health system to best prepare for health care reform. Van Gorder received his master s degree in public administration/health services administration at the University of Southern California, completed the Wharton System CEO Program at the University of Pennsylvania and earned his bachelor s from California State University, Los Angeles. He is the immediate past Chairman of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). Van Gorder s rise to health care executive began as a hospital patient, when as a police officer he was critically injured. After recovery, Van Gorder continued his health care management education and achieved increased levels of responsibility. This year, Modern Healthcare named him one of the 100 Most Powerful in Healthcare for the fourth consecutive year. Mark A. Talamini, MD, FACS: University of California, San Diego Dr. Mark A. Talamini is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and is a pioneer in minimally invasive abdominal surgery. A highly respected surgeon, researcher, and teacher, Dr. Talamini is a member of the UCSD Moores Cancer Center s team of top cancer surgeons, specializing in surgery for gastric, pancreatic, and colon cancer, and is recognized as one of the leading authorities on laparoscopic and roboticassisted surgery in the United States. In his clinics and surgeries at UCSD, he specializes in gastrointestinal surgery, with a particular emphasis on the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn s disease, ulcerative colitis), and the use of minimally invasive technology to minimize pain and scarring. Captain Mark Kobelja, MD, MC USN: Naval Medical Center, San Diego Captain Mark Kobelja is Deputy Commander of the Naval Medical Center, San Diego. Before this position, Captain Kobelja was the Director of Surgical Services at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) and also served as NNMC s Chief of the Clinical Staff and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff, as well as Department Head of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. Before selection for medical training, Captain Kobelja was a Surface Warfare Officer from his commissioning in 1987 until transfer to the Medical Corps in His medical deployments have included Officer-in-Charge of a Forward Resuscitation Surgical System surgical team in Ar Ramadi, Iraq and Staff Anesthesiologist for the 5th Fleet Surgical Augmentation Team, Manama, Bahrain. Ralph Dilley, MD: Scripps Health Dr. Ralph Dilley is the Vice Chairman, Department of Surgery at Scripps Clinic Medical Group and Surgeon-in-Chief at Scripps Green Hospital. In August 2011, Dr. Dilley was named to the U.S. News & World Report Top Doctors list and was ranked in the top one percent of vascular surgeons in the nation.

5 Mark Schumacher, MD, FACS: Kaiser Permanente Dr. Schumacher is a general surgeon and Physician Director of Hospital Surgical Services at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego. Dr. Schumacher joined Kaiser Permanente in 1990 and served as Chief of Surgery from Dr. Schumacher is a voluntary assistant and clinical professor at the University of California, San Diego and was previously a visiting professor of surgery at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden from He attended medical school at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and performed his internship and residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. David Chang, PhD, MPH, MBA: University of California, San Diego School of Medicine Dr. David Chang is the Director of Outcomes Research in the Department of Surgery at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. With a decade of experience in both surgery and health policy, Dr. Chang helps improve the nation s health care systems by shaping the direction of outcomes-based scientific research to guide clinical practice, policy discussion, and ultimately public engagement. Dr. Chang s research emphasizes systems-level factors and their impact on patient outcomes, including structure, process, quality, costs, and access issues. Chang is a member of several advisory committees and review groups such as the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs and the Roundtable on Emergency Trauma Research sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. James E. LaBelle, MD, MBA: Scripps Health Dr. James LaBelle is Corporate Vice President of Quality, Medical Management, and Physician Co-Management at Scripps Health. Dr. LaBelle has been an emergency department physician with Scripps Encinitas since 1987, and Chief of Staff for two terms, from From 1998 to the present, Dr. LaBelle has also held the position of Medical Director of Emergency Services and in 2005 he was named Medical Director of Clinical Quality. He is also President and CEO of Coastline Emergency Physicians Medical Group. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and completed his internship and residency at the University of California, San Diego.
