3 though y are going to sing ooh or oom and keep ir lips relaxed Then, putting short end to ir lips, y should hum (not lo) against end kazoo The sound is produed y sympati virations ausing axed paper in resonator hannel to move in along ith humming For est results, try using syllales doo for longer tones and doot for shorter, more staato notes Pratie se hen arming up to e sure that everyone is doing it orretly Adapting this part for your performane - Instrumentally, re is more to play on kazoo part than on any or, so e ant to give you some options To egin ith, if you ant it REALLY simple, ust take interlude from first verse or any or one, and use it for every verse And if you don t ant to make all your players learn eah interlude, have ust one player or a small group assigned to eah verse Also kno that you may ant all your singers to play kazoos For this e reommend a student part or lyri sheet and kazoo part Thumpa Thumps [Big Drums] - This part is ideally played on some large drum, or etter still, to large drums If you don t have m at your shool, perhaps you an orro some from middle shool or high shool in your distrit Large toms or even marhing and tuned ass drums ould e great In a pinh, use largest frame drum you have availale Klunk Klanks [Coells] - Coells are very ommon and should e easy to find If you don t have m, y aren t too expensive, and should even e easy to orro This part an also e played on a found metal instrument Just go to a unkyard and look for a ar part or or heavy metal piee that gives you a hollo sound Janglereenz [Tamourines] - Like oells, se are very ommon and easy to find in a lot plaes The est are those ith atual framed heads, ut re are many heaper and smaller ones that may ork ell for small hands Plasti Tues [Boomhakers or Joia Tues ] - These tuned plasti tues (also referred to as BWs to keep things simpler) are one most enoyale musial instruments for kids (and everyone else) to ome along in a long time This ork an e performed ith one or more sets diatoni BWs, though e highly reommend inluding a set ass diatoni BWs as y are muh more resonant If you have m availale, Joia Tues provide an even more resonant sound, though y are more expensive There are no rules for ho to play a Boomhaker, ut sine e ve had a it experiene orking ith m in our reording sessions, e thought e might share a fe tips ith you: BWs should ideally e round, so if y arrive a little flattened or kids have eaten m flat, squish m until y are rounder We usually play m y striking m on top ooden stools We have also seen m played y striking m on floor You an also strike your hand, your thigh, all, or any stale surfae, suh as a tale or even a drum pad One teaher mentioned using linoleum tiles as striking surfaes Alternatively, one might strike a Boomhaker ith something suh as a mallet or a stik Experiment That s half fun Try different hitting tehniques, too If a Boomhaker is hit too hard, you get more a slapping sound than atual tone We have found that hitting m at a slight angle prevents slap and allos more resonane They should e held firmly ut not so muh so that it hokes f sound The moment a kid has a BW in his hands, he ill not e ale to resist temptation to start playing it We strongly advise you to let players have a fe minutes to get it out ir systems efore trying to atually aomplish anything Hoever, efore you even hand m out, arefully estalish your rules lest y eome sords, lus, et al One kids have had a fe minutes to play around ith ir BWs freely, all an end to it deisively Keep ontrol No more playing until you say so (This protool also orks ell ith kazoos, y ay) When rehearsing ith BWs, here s hat e do We identify eah note one y one and ask player(s) holding that note to hold it up for all to see We might also ask Johnny, ho has G, to point to a G in his musi for us Do not expet that first reading musi ill make any sense It on t It ill e a mush aophonous noise That s okay To make experiene more tolerale and effiient, learn musi in piees This is really important Again, keep ontrol You ount it f (more sloly than it ill eventually e), n you lap or snap tempo for m In our experiene, it ill take at least 6 or 7 readings efore y start to gel Don t e disouraged if it takes longer It may take more than one rehearsal If you do need to go to more rehearsals, alays egin ith a revie hat as learned last time (After you ve let m play freely for a fe minutes, ourse) It is also our experiene that players tend to rush eat hronially Don t seat it It s part unspoken um, harm Like or ommunal instruments, BWs an e germ arriers So disourage students ho try to make m into dideridus, unless BWs are nely sterile They an e leaned like any plasti instrument, though 2
4 y are thin, so avoid extreme heat Rememer, this part an e played on any several or instruments if you do not have BWs It ould atually e onderful on handells or ell himes, though you ould need to hange lyris You an also play this part on one or several Orff instruments or or pid ells or even on eletroni keyoards One last thought on BWs on that last note, you an have all players, regardless note y play, play that stinger quarter note Plinga Tingers [Triangles] - There are many options for triangles out re, and most shools ill have one or more For this ork, e reommend a smaller one ith as lear and pure a tone as possile Some ig ones, espeially aluminum ones, tend to lank instead ring To get est sound, triangle should e suspended in some ay that allos player to hold it ithout muffling sound A small lear loop is a ommon ay Don t leave too muh play in it, though, or triangle ill rotate Almost as important as triangle quality is quality eater It should e metal as ell, and should also e as melodious as possile (We are told y a pressional perussionist that some orhestral players spend more time and money hunting for good eaters than for triangles in question) If you don t have one you like, try some metal things around house, suh as old, heavy steel or silver forks As a matter fat, you might find your est triangle sound among found oets Old, rih metal an have a lovely sound As ith homemade ooden instruments, though, eare edges that may e rough or sharp Crashee Klangers [Toy ymals] - Ideally, this ill e one small sets ymals ith handles so y an e played as rash ymals You are going for sound a toy and here, so real, larger ymals on t have same effet You an also use a single small ymal that type played ith a stik or hard mallet Toodly Flooters [Reorders]- There isn t muh to say aout reorder part exept that it as designed to e played y players in ir first fe months playing If you ant to adapt part for more advaned players, you have our est ishes and permission You ould alter ir solo setions andor orro melodies in kazoo parts as you like And sine pulished part is meant to e played ith kazoo part, omining eginning and more advaned players ill also ork Jingly Thingles [Jingle Bells] - It s sound Christmas They are essential to oyous sound, and y are easy to provide There are, ourse, several types traditional ingle ells, inluding little ingle stiks and ingle rings ith a fe ells on a loth or elasti ring Proaly most ommon sound you hear on our reordings and in orhestras and ommerial reordings omes from a large pole ingle ells, a ooden handle ith a ouple dozen ells on it These aren t heap, and y are pretty large for young hands Chooka Chookas [ShakersMaraas] - Shakers are ommon to almost every ulture on earth, and y ome in all sizes and shapes For young players and for this ork, e reommend some small simple shakers like egg shakers or simple shaped shakers that are so ommonly availale You an even make some ith your students y filling small resonant ontainers ith eads or eans Something as large as a soda an is proaly too large and umersome for most small hands We reommended smaller individual uie ans or any small metal or plasti ontainer that an e safely resealed These might inlude empty pill ontainers, plasti spie ottles, or even small earring oxes After you are happy ith sound, seal m safely and deorate m to taste Kliky Klakers [Rhythm Stiks] - These are proaly simplest instruments, and least expensive Most shools have m The most asi stiks are inhes long, hopefully made a harder more resonant ood, ut e ve seen all kinds You an make your on ith doel rods, ut if you do, e reommend that you at least sand ends to keep m from splintering, and maye even paint m ith non-toxi paint If you are ell-equipped, this part an e played ith laves or Australian lap stiks If you use se, e don t reommend that you use too many m as y are muh louder and more resonant You an also use drum stiks from a drum set if you like Drum Tum Thumpers [Drums] - This part is ideally played y one or more simple frame drums, depending on size your orhestra There are literally a thousand types to onsider, from small drums ith open ottoms to some ne flat drums to tom toms to larger drums suh as ongos, ongas, and demes They an e played y hand or ith a mallet As ith most instruments, a homemade hand drum is fine, and an e anything from a ox drum (a sturdy ox ith a alloon or fari stred over it) to a ig plasti ug played ith hands The thiker ones (suh as lean ottles for liquid laundry detergent) an sound pretty good, not unlike an udu, espeially if you leave hole open Some Thoughts On Staging There are many ays to approah this ork in performane, ut e ill give you a fe ideas that might make this more effetive for you 3
5 Be An Orhestra! - This is an opportunity to have your students perform in a large instrumental group, ust like a and or an orhestra Aordingly, group your instruments as you ould in suh an ensemle You an have students stand or sit, or any omination to that allos you to see m and vie versa Eah student should hold his or her instrument ith poise and dignity as efits a serious performer, even in funny parts That ill look good to audiene, and ill usually make it easier to hear instruments For speial effet, you might even ant your orhestra in tuxes y earing deorated T-shirts, seatshirts, or even paper faades that make it look like y are dressed in a lak oat, hite shirt, and a o tie Working red and green into se ostumes might also e fun If you have multiple players on eah instrument, you might even ant to have eah grouping in similar ostumes As you group Boomhakers toger, ideally you should have m in sale order, ust like a keyoard, ith loest note on left If y lift ir BWs into air efore eah note, you ill find yourself ith a olorful, small ave performed y your BW players Movement - Simple movement an add to any large ensemle performane like this Espeially if your performane spae (like a gymnatorium floor) is large, have eah group soloists do a simple preparatory move, suh as raising instrument high or spreading ir arms in ar efore y play Or add this to a step forard even a ar earlier, and a step ak after ir ar But e reative, or leave reativity to kids Just e sure that y are aare safety and personal spae hen planning ir moves And playing kazoos or reorders hile y move is a ad idea Big Finish! - The finale is arranged so that everyone is playing for last setion All that ativity an e enhaned y simple movements during setion at ar 71, and as everyone shouts at end, y an put ir arms ide as y shout, ringing m ak for final note By ay, you may ant to hange final shouted ords to Happy Holidays or any or exlamation that orks re And don t forget to o As a matter fat, you may ish to play some or all tune over for extended os, perhaps singling out your soloists for speial os The purhaser this kit has right to make as many opies reproduile parts as are needed for performers in any shool or shools here that purhaser teahes Furrmore, he or she also has full rights to perform this ork in puli Permission is granted to dupliate aompanying reording for ak-up purposes only 4
